I've read several times that the career for a player in the NFL averages approximately 4 years. That got me to wondering what the average was for a porn actor. I'm guessing it's about 2 years, with very few having what it takes to make it for very long.
As far as the women go, having a good body, a decent face and a pulse seems to be what it takes. Deciding that porn is right for them is another matter entirely.

not sure about what it takes other than turning up and doing the business, most girls don't leave because porn is finished with them they leave because they are finished with porn.

At one end you have the girls who go into porn with the intention of only doing a few scenes; at the other end you have women like Nina Hartley or Sharon Kane who can compete at porn's top level for literally decades. Any average is going to be meaningless. It's more like snooker than the NFL: there are the Joe Johnsons who blaze and fail and the Jimmy Whites who go on forever.
and, just like in any other sport these days, there are those who make numerous comebacks after their "retirements" just the fact that you can speak of retirement in plural these days... and then you also have those who stop doing one particular thing, like doing b/g or stop doing scenes all together but then still parade around as a starlet. so, they're out but not realllllllllllly out.

The nature of the industry is such that they get a great deal of work in their first few months and then have to deal with being considered "shot out" and possibly have to reinvent themselves with new "firsts" to keep the fanbois salivating. There are the other considerations like abysmal relationships and the rough nature of the sex that's prevalent. There aren't that many women who go past a couple of years in the industry, but they tend to be the best and most dedicated of the lot. Using things like feature dancing to build up the interest helps girls take a break, yet stay connected somehow. Also, the fact that most of the women don't live in LA gives them time to reflect and make the decision not to come back that they might not have made had they been local.
Contract Girls = 4 to 6 years. Freelance Girls = 2 years.
But careers are getting shorter and shorter. Like someone said, above, 3 month careers are becoming more frequent. Another question for a thread might be: name the girls who came and went within 12 months...there are quite a few.
Bottom line: I don't even try to remember the girl's name until she's been around for over a year.

As fair as the average goes, Skronker didn't mean a 3-month career...he said 3 month average , which someone pointed out earlier is just a crap number. You have a girl who lasts ONE DAY, and a girl who lasts 4+ years. What's the average...2 years, between the two of them.
How many one hit wonders -v- longile starlets we have, who the fuck knows? I sure don't feel like doing the math. A good formulated spreadsheet might make that a hell of alot easier.
Another issue is how do we factor-in girls who shoot 100+ scenes in three months, but the scenes take the next three years to be released?
How long is that career?

That's a three month stint. Hell, George Bush will be screwing over the country for the next 25 years through his court appointments. But, he'll only get credit for being in the White House for 8 years (unless you count all the vacation time in Crawford - in which case, it's more like 1 year).

The actual answer surprised me with it coming out to about 3 years which means that every pornstar with five years, seven years or 10-15 and up is essentially a gift or bonus. I find that interesting especially with the emergence of the internet because there are more resources at your fingertips for researching everything you need to know before entering the industry. You would think that additional information within reach would lead to longer careers rather than shorter ones. The level of burnout, especially among American adult performers is staggering because there's been a greater effort to have therapy, financial and legal advisers available to help everyone stay grounded.
