As someone who spent seven years in the XXX biz, I still don't understand people's [performers & fans alike] fascination with AVN - The magazine or their joke of an awards ceremony?!

First of all, AVN (the magazine) is nothing more than a glorified promotional tool for adult companies to 'push' their product to retailers. As of late, this "rag" has even elimimated the majority of reviews they used to offer [something which originally made the magazine noteworthy to both retailers and fans] in order to make room for more advertising = $$$$$! And, speaking of advertising, the more ad space a company purchases the better chance they have of being nominated for, and eventually walking-away with, an AVN award <~ this has been proven in years past!.

As for performers, are the girls (or guys) honestly thinking of their performance as "award-worthy" while having sex on camera?!! If so, that's a performance I [as a fan] would have no interest in watching. Are there female performers who believe, while on-set .. "Maybe if I take a few additional cocks up my ass, I'll walk away with an award come January?"! (this doesn't apply to Mila) lol

And what, honestly, is the notoriety that comes with receiving an AVN Award? Except for the production companies and directors who use their award as a promotional tool to retailers (and then place it on a shelf in their office and allow it to collect dust), for performers these awards are quickly deemed worthless!

It's obviously not at all like the mainstream film business, where a "prestigious" award affords you more and/or 'better' work. In the porn industry, if you're casted, show-up (not even on-time mostly), show a little 'energy' while having sex on-camera and remain up-to-date with your tests you'll continue to work .. As simple as that!

And besides "Fashionistas" [which most definitely deserved it's praise], are there any non-industry people who can, honestly, (off the top-of-their-head) remember award winners of years past?!! .. Or really 'care' about it one way or the other?!

If these awards were being presented and/or voted-upon strictly by fans of XXX, or perhaps unbiased "industry insiders", I could possibly understand the 'hype' and fascination (and potential benefit) of such an event; however, AVN, both the magazine and awards show, are strictly in this for the MONEY! Period (.)! Even their advertisers [their 'life's blood' financially] have to purchase seats and tables for the event. It's the same reason TV Guide produces their own awards show ... Cause they know they ain't the Emmys or Golden Globes! lol

Again, I'm just simply trying to understand people's fascination with the AVN Awards?! $250.00 of a porn fan's "hard-earned" money is (in my opinion) much better spent on .. a date!? .. food!? .. rent!? .. or, perhaps, buying more porn?!!

I say screw AVN! It's 'high' time for the ADT Awards!!!

Even though I don't agree with every word here, I respect your opinion and I'm sure you'll find plenty of like-minded individuals who will no doubt echo your sentiments.

Personally, the only part that moved the mercury in my thermometer was suggesting an ADT Awards. With Rog, CAVR and others having their own awards, THAT definintely stuck out as a good idea.

I agree with you 100 % , Shane !! AVN awards is the biggest crock I have ever seen. I used to buy their magazine all the time but the ads increased and the reviews decreased. The reviews used to be quite detailed a few years back , then they became very short and they lacked in description of the movies.
Porn is very subjective so any reviewer can say that a movie is good or bad , in a few short words. A longer description can often help a customer or retailer decide if the movie is worth picking up.

Every Industry has an awards event, not just porn. It's about recognition and respect. It might mean more $$$, might not. As for the gathering dust, an award is in your head. That piece of glass is just a little reminder

Good luck everyone!

As someone who's visited the awards for the last six years or so (and then written them up for my mags), I wouldn't call them worthless exactly.

Crowded, definitely. Someone told me there are over 100 categories in 2006, which I think is too many. I'm all for people being recognised in their chosen profession, but maybe it's time the video and film categories were unified. What's next? A separate category for HD, too?

Awards are always subjective, whether they're given out by a magazine whose decisions may or may not be affected by pressure from other departments, through to fan awards (is the XRCO still going?) were fans can place multiple votes to skew the awards.

Nothing's perfect.

However, having said that, without showcase events like the AVN Awards, the adult industry would still be seen as very seedy and underground. We need the mainstream media to cover events like AEE and the awards to show the professional, non-spunk stained side of adult; it's something they can cover and not really be able to sneer at. Unless they read out the categories on-air, of course!

Do the awards actually 'mean' anything? Probably not, but where else can you go to see a girl thank her mother after accepting an award for Best Anal scene? That's worth the ticket on its own.

The other issue is that this business is full of political back-stabbers, get rich quick merchants, wannabes and hangers-on. Everyone needs validation now and then, and the AVN Awards is as good a way as any of doing it. And I don't have a problem with the entire industry (which makes more money than Hollywood) giving itself a serious slap on the back once a year. I wouldn't miss it for the world. It's a beautiful circus full of fascinating creatures.

Now if someone could come up with awards for adult magazines...

Incidentally, Terri, did you get my email reply to yours, sweetheart?

If there's one thing I hate is a sore loser. Shane, you sound like the porn version of C-list mainstrain celebrities who never got their acting career out of second gear and decided to thunb their nose at the Oscars because they weren't nominated or guarnteed the respect they deserve for the years they put in.

Last year, I had 2 nominations. This year I don't. All that says to me is that my friends have nominations and I'm routing for them all the way! Sure many of the movies I've done are being nominated, but not me personally. Does this now mean that AVN is now a horrible organization with unfair policies? Certainly not. You can't argue that AVN is all politics, claiming that advertising exposure is proportionate to winnings. Think of all the companies with AVN awards that spent less on ad space than the larger companies.

Looks like I'll be partying with my friends and walking the red carpet graciously this January while you'll be at home watching Matlock and on the phone with a bucket of KFC.

I thought it was common knowledge that those who pay Fishbein get their awards. That should explain why Vivid keeps getting awards.

Graciously? I hate to say this but it's a porn show, not the Oscars so I don't think the word graciously is at place here, neither are your poor attacks on Shane.

On Carly Milne's old blog she described going to the awards in a cab and having a conversation with the cabbie:
"So how many awards are they handing out?"
"100 something"
"So it's a bit like the Special Olympics?"
(paraphrased from memory because pornblogaphry's archive is no longer online or I can't find it)

Today's crop of pornstars do exhibit grace and poise. The word slipped by me without a blink. There may have been a time when the industry fed off of under-educated outcasts, but today's girls are quite sharp. Plus I'd like to see Meryl Streep fuck with the grace of a Gia Jordan.

But Gia, I too must take issue with your reaction to Shane. I used to work for a magazine which handed out willy-nilly awards for "The Best of The Best". It was pure political / economic crap. We disguised it a bit of course by bestowing awards on non-advertisers. But that was just a bit of clever subterfuge.

C'mon now. You're a good girl and Shane's a good girl. There, you've got that in common.

No, those were the stars of the 70's en 80's with Lisa De Leeuw being the perfect example. Pornstars these days do look like pornstars, of course nothing wrong with that.

Oddly, you're making the argument I constantly am putting forward. I was thinking more of the bimbos of the '80s when I made my argument.

The New York women of the late '70s were indeed quite bright and classy. Hell, I even dated Samantha Fox and I'll never forget my dad telling me that she's too worldly for me.

Veronica Hart, Candida Royalle, Merle Michaels, Susan McBain ... all quite sophisticated women. Point well taken.

I agree with Shane to an extent. As a fan, the awards (of this or any industry really) don't mean anything to me at all and I've read some performers indicate likewise. However, then you get a lot of girls who seem genuinely excited about being nominated and I do I feel good for them. Because of that aspect I wouldn't call the awards completely worthless. They definitely need to consolidate their number of categories though.

I've seen Terri in action plenty of times in the past year but it wasn't until I read this that I found her undeniably sexxxy for some reason. That avatar makes me ache in places I thought I couldn't.
And that's just the attitude I wish everyone had towards it instead of taking it all so seriously, my sweet baby "G." Great outlook on it all. Is there any way I can have you AND Terri without the other getting jealous?

First off, you're certainly not the first person to say this, and I wonder about the motivations behind it.
And you can say the same things about "Pipe Fittings Weekly" and "Walk-In Refrigerator Review" magazines as well. Industries have trade magazines whose purpose is to serve the industry.

So, if you want to take AVN to task about something, you need to do it on those terms...

Ah! The moving of reviews to the online site is nothing new for AVN, nor for the mainstream press. By comparison, it costs a trillion times (Okay, maybe only a billion) more to produce a magazine than a website.
Anyone in any industry likes recognition... porn is no different.

Just like the Pipe Fitter might want to angle for Employee of the Month or the entrepeneur might want to be listed as "one to watch!" in a Dun & Bradstreet article, so pornstars want to be recognized as well.

There's something wrong with that?

Ask Marisa Tomei what that Oscar did for her.

If anything, it gives these girls a self-esteem boost.

Henri Pachard wrote a brilliant article for AVN Insider a year or two ago addressing this same issue... lemme see if I can find it...

Ah! Here it is. The relevant sections:

"I also know about the bitching and complaining that goes on every year about the voting. I’ll let you in a little something: The AVN Awards was not the first; in fact, it’s the third behind the Adult Film Association of America (AFAA) and the East Coast Producers Association, which are both only memories now. Fuck, in 1976, when the AFAA held its first awards presentation, there were less than thirty adult films produced that year and maybe four or five titles were nominated in about a dozen categories; and even then the losers bitched and cried “fraud!” or “fix!” or “what the fuck?” Today there are thirty productions nominated for best film and video, along with eighty-four other awards with more than 10,000 fucking titles. What fraud or fix? I don’t think there are thirty people around at AVN who they can get to do all that fucking voting. Would YOU want that job?"

[...]

And for Yes Portal he wrote:

"This award show has come to mean something for these kids, and a hell of lot for those who win. I’ll bet it’s better than the tooth fairy, the Easter Bunny and Mommy putting her hair in pigtails for her first birthday party combined. For a guy, it might even be better than his first deep tongue kiss and a hand job.

In fact, it’s one of the few things left in the business that still remains win-win for a wide spread of all the players in the game, that ranges from the big companies that spend a shitload of money advertising every year, to a young woman who just might experience a feeling of joy that she’s never known in all of her likely abused life.

Even if the feeling lasts only a night, her memories of what she felt winning her award might linger almost as long as some of those she wished would go away.

No one in our industry ever spent a night dreaming of becoming a porno star, or a director. So it does not matter how silly, trivial or overdone this award show might seem to be for so many of us, or so few of us.

I happen to think that a lot of us got into the business because we didn’t get to dream enough about anything. So a few more statues handed out won’t be so bad. "

I don't think anyone in the mainstream can tell you what "Fashionistas" is (not to belittle John's achievment.). These awards aren't for the civilians -- they're for the industry.

Just like you don't care which car dealer won Dodge's "Dealership of the Year" award, nor does Joe Six-Pack care who won "Best Anal By A Virgo While Smoking"

Perhaps you'd be happier with the FOXE awards, which is the "People's Choice" awards, or the XRCO (which are the Golden Globes) compared to the AVNs being the "Oscars"
It's priced like that to keep the casual fan OUT.

This is an industry event. To consider it anything else is ludicrous. Companies spend marketing dollars to buy tables. Consumers wouldn't really go to it. Industry people don't always go to it. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

This year, I'm going. IAFD bought a table to say thanks for the people who help out and because some associates of mine wanted to go. So I'm going.

It's an experience I'm not necessaily looking forward to -- I've been to the real-life Emmy's and they're dull. If it's not you up for something, who cares... and if you are up for something, you don't care until your category is called.

An interesting concept... check the archives. ;-)

Hmm. Interesting points all the way around. I say fuck it let's have the ADT awards in Jamaica. I'll set it up for everyone for the same price you can go to the AVN show plus.......the pornstars will be naked, the booze is included, and I don't have to spend an outrageous amount of money on a gown that I'll wear once. Any takers?

Awards shows in any industry are just an attempt to draw attention and add prestige, whether it is in the gaming & toy industries, culinary awards, or porn. Regular consumers generally know what they like.

You make two good points and right on...

Point 1: "If these awards were being presented and/or voted-upon strictly by fans of XXX, or perhaps unbiased "industry insiders"," -- This would add credibility and more respect to the entire process. Might attract more fans and advertisers.

Point 2: "I say screw AVN! It's 'high' time for the ADT Awards!!!" -- Just tell me where to vote, I'm in!

The awards presentation is also a celebration of movies and talent, like the Academy Awards, something everyone should enjoy and feel proud to be a part of. It sounds like there may be some room for the organizers of this event to re-evaluate the process and make it better. Maybe someone over at AVN will read your post and take a look.

Excellent idea, Devinn! That would be one awards ceremony where I wouldn't mind if it went on for 4 hours and gave out 100+ awards, so long as all of the speeches were given in the nude (except perhaps some of the director and male talent awards, unless they are given special time limits). I could also even tolerate David Letterman hosting the show: "Keiko meet Koika, Koika meet Keiko".

An ADT Awards would be cool. Jamaica in 2007? Especially if it coincided with the Cricket World Cup - I'd be there!

Without commenting too much on the value of the AVN awards themselves (which I am of the view varies depending on the specific award - surely the "Best Director" award means more $$$ in the future?), I think the ceremony is important for the industry as a night where all of the significant players can get together and assess where their industry is at and where they want it to go in the future. The night's importance for industry cohesion and public relations (that is, the mileage it gets each year as "the acceptable face of porn" on the E! network and numerous comedy talk shows) should not be under-estimated.

I can certainly understand (and sometimes I even agree with) the skepticism over the AVN awards process.

However, I don't agree that it shouldn't mean anything at all for the industry people involved. Believe me, as a person at a production company, I certainly take notice of the people who have received nominations. After Lauren Phoenix's win, I took a lot more notice of her.

Anyway, I'm not saying we should let it affect our whole lives. An award for anything is never that important.

But I'm certainly not going to poo-poo the awards. I think AVN has done a nice job with expanding the list of people who vote on the awards to include some critis who aren't influenced by the amount of money spent in advertising dollars.

C.J. (if you don't mind me calling you that) -

Appreciate the candor of your response .. Thanks.

I (obviously) think the idea of "The ADT Awards" is in order! This place is 'booming' with FANS who aren't afraid to speak their mind! (if there's any blood left running though it) lol

But, now that I think about it, it would be a difficult challenge to keep the idiot 'hackers', forum 'trolls' and individuals who oppose particular genres from disturbing the integrity of such a voting process. And, when it comes down to it, ADT is pretty-much an "ongoing poll" of sorts .. If someone has something to say about a porn-related subject, positive or negative, they simply post it.

Oh well, I still think "The ADT Awards" is an interesting concept! I hope the 'mods' run with it .. Just for FUN!

OK, this was one of the points I'm confused about.

Looking at this from a performer's perspective .. How does winning an award for, oh, let's say "Best Anal Scene" gain you any true "respect" ? Even from fans?

Recognition .. OK. I understand that, especially within the industry. However, if you, as a 'fan', don't like a particular star for one reason or another (primarily looks are a deciding basis), you're not going to become a fan simply because she (or he) won the award. So, have they ultimately "gained your respect"?

Don't get me wrong .. I'm not at all saying that there is no respect within the industry or between performers and fans; however, I (personally) don't believe that such respect comes from receiving an award, especially from a self-proclaimed and self-promoting 'trade' magazine.

But that's just my "little-ole" opinion darlin'.

Sorry to hear that TonyC .. Some of the action on those boxcovers looks pretty "hot"!

I'm hoping your comment wasn't to suggest that is why I wrote my original post? I've been out of the industry (happily) since 2001, so I'm definitely not looking for an award 'nom' .. And, during my time in the industry, I was never 'aiming' for one.

I, honestly, got into the industry to explore my sexual fantasies .. and, as a bonus, make a 'paycheck' doin' it. The 'grunts' & 'moans' of my fellow performers, both male & female, and the countless orgasms I experienced (both on and off camera) along the way, were my real "awards" [rewards]!

OK .. I can see "where your coming from" with this, as kind-of a positive 'crossover' spin to promote the industry; however, really?, honestly?, truly? .. Do you think mainstream coverage of dressed-up porn stars walking the red carpet is going to change someone's opinion of the industry? I'm sorry sweetheart, but you can't put whipped cream on a turd and call it "Pie"! Porn is 'seedy' and (for the most part) 'underground' .. almost "taboo" .. but I, for one, think that is part of the intrigue that draws fans to the industry. [Have I said the word 'industry' enough in this one paragraph?! Geesh, sorry]
$250.00?!!! For what's now considered an "old joke", at least amongst those in the biz? There are much better ways to spend that kind of money in Las Vegas and truly end-up with a 'memorable evening', even if you don't gamble .. or dial-a-date. lol
Wow! Come to think of it, I don't remember there ever being an award for adult magazines or their photographers for that matter!! Excellent point! Obviously, AVN (a publication itself) wouldn't want to present an award to their advertising competitors. I would love to see this "develop"! [Sorry, I have a thing for photographers]

By the way M&M .. Thanks for taking some time away from the magazine(s) to respond. We have friends in the publication business and know how 'hectic' it can be.

As far as I am concerned, no one needs an award to get my respect. But recognition is definitely a point, I think. If I haven't seen a girl in a scene I probably won't remember her name after reading it once or twice. But there are a lot of girls I never saw in a scene that I recognize due to reading their names so often here. AVN award nominees/winners are probably talked about more often.
What's more, if I give my best in what I do and someone tells me that I did a good job that doesn't hurt for sure. Therefore I hope my dear and incredibly sexy Flower Tucci will get the AVN award she deserves.

That said it would be great if fans could vote, too. I think the ADT Awards is a great idea! We already have Lee O's Porn Star Deathmatch for the category "Best Female Performer", that contest could be helpful because it showed positive and negative aspects of fan voting. It was fun, fun, fun, but some people abused the polls for porn star bashing.

Whoa!! Gia .. Sweetie! I honestly don't think that my original post directed any negativity or hostility toward the performers themselves; however, if you believe it did, than I graciously apologize. If anything, I'm a sincere advocate of adult performers and truly have quite an "admiration" for their work. The award show itself .. I get. A night of glitz & glamour for the industry. But the awards themselves are worth ... ???

That was the 'main' point of my post Miss Jordan. I truly did not mean to offend any of the performers, nominated or not. Especially a contributor to ADT like yourself.

As for me 'crying' for a past nomination, that's not the case. [I just addressed this in an earlier reply]

OK, I can think of a few; although, most of the 'smaller' companies have just recently started winning AVN awards (companies recognized long-ago by XRCO and/or FOXE), and you have to consider the number of catagories that are added each year. As someone here stated, there are over 100 of 'em this year alone!

Again, my intent was not to 'bash' any of the nominees or participants [actors, directors, companies alike] or even the attendees for that matter. I was simply trying to determine the 'value' (<~ that's the word I was looking for damit!) of an AVN Award.

Hmmm ... a whole bucket?!! Yummy! Wrappin' my mouth around a tender breast AND juicy thigh! I'll be in heaven! .. Basically 'cause I won't be in the 'chaos' that is Las Vegas in January! I do, sincerely, hope you and your friends have a great time at the show and after-parties!

Wow! I honestly did not realize that my original post came-off as being "bitter". I was simply attempting to perhaps make a few 'points' within trying to discover the fascination behind AVN Awards. Again, I did not mean for it sound hateful toward anyone individual or company .. really!

Thanks saratoga120! Although I don't know you, I'd say you're a good judge of character. I too think Gia is a good girl, but if you put us in a room together I'd want her to be her "bad" self! <wink, wink>

We've considered doing awards in the past. The logistics are a huge PITA. It's one of those situations where you're damned if you do or your're damned if you don't. You always end up hurting someone's feelings and that's not a fun position to be in.

Search the forum for "wads". You can see the efforts that were made in the past.

We're not opposed to some forum members organizing the categories, the voting and all that logistical stuff. However we would only do it if we could keeping the owners of the site out of that process. I'll do any necessary programming for it but I'd like to stay out of it as much as possible.

Feel free to start a new thread about it.

I don't think that they are completely worthless. Most of the industry perspective has been heard from & I pretty much agree with what AM FAQ said. In my own (somewhat specialized) industry we have a similar function once a year. It is expensive to go to (but you are expected to be there if at all possible) & incredibly boring to sit through (the open bar really helps ). The only time that any attention is paid to what is going on up on the stage is if you or a friend is up for an award. The rest of the time is talking & joking around with the others at your table. When all is said & done though, it usually turns out to be a fairly fun evening. I expect that the AVN award show is similar.

As a casual fan however, the awards do have quite a bit of value to me. What they did (before I found ADT & the wealth of information here) was act a a quick screening device. Mrs RT & I tend to watch features/comedies. The award/nomination list would give me something to work off of while searching for reviews. Rather than scroll through endless pages of movies that I never buy, it gives me a way to focus the search quickly. Also as I tend to buy movies a year or two after they came out, being able to look up the past winners/nominations is also a time saver.

As far as ADT awards go, I have mixed feelings about that. As a member here I would like to think that I could/would be part of the process, but what would that mean in the grand scheme of things. Last year my company won an award for "Best new distributor of 2004" from a software company down in Texas. I found out about it a few months later when my mom called up to congratulate me . Apparently she Googled my name & the press release announcing the award popped up. What did we do to deserve this high honor? We bought one small package from them to resell to one of our clients who needed such a program . To be worth something to the recipient, the people giving out the awards must be big/well recognized enough so that it is actually wanted. I'm not suggesting that ADT is small & worthless (quite the opposite really) but it is something to keep in mind when thinking about our own award program.

How about to make it much simpler and to avoid any rigging, we just have the reviewers vote rather than just a free for all? It might even bring in new reviewers as a result.

Maybe it would be better if the reviewers just nominated and threw the rest up to open voting. But realistically, Rog already has his awards done that way and it's hardly necessary to create a glut of polls for the same thing.

I'm waiting for my AVN award for 'Outstanding Achievement in Jerking Off'.

Those bastards have snubbed me for years!

I'm all for Devinn's idea of the adt awards show in Jamaica. As far as logistics I have a lot figured out. Drew and I cannot be involved in anything but helping put on the show. A committee of regular reviewers and forum members could run the whole thing. We would not open voting up to the the public (like Picman said Rog already does this.) The voting group would be made of up reviewers and regulars.

The biggest hurdle is making sure everyone voting has seen all the nominated movies. Renting online is easy in the US but not so easy in other countries.

Tell you what I'll do just for shits and giggles. I'll put together a number of what it would cost to do an ADT Awards show in Jamaica. The price would include room, tax, food, liquor, the show, all parties, autograph sessions, photo opportunities, and all the resort activities. I'll work the numbers and have an answer for you by the end of the week. Steph if you're really into doing this let's put our brains together and put together an events team. Shoot me an email and let's see if we can put this thing together for 2006 or 2007. No need to compete with the AVN dates. The pie is big enough for everyone.

ADT awards wont' work in my opinion because the fans here will only vote for the stars who actually post here, at least the ones that post here will have an advantage so it will be a very subjective thing.

I read that to submit your film for the awards you have to send AVN 45 copies of the dvd. 45 copies? Sounds like a great way for someone to get free porn. That's why the ADT Awards sound like a great idea....free copies of all submissions and I'll sign up as one of the judges! :)

Don't think the AVN awards are worthless, they must have some merit. I see the "ten" satellite service is running a contest to send a lucky winner to the awards. Wonder how many entries they get...
