| MikeSouth Deactivated User 511 Posts 11/02 | and see the light From My Blog There’s a lot being said about the AVN Award Nominations and I have given this a lot of thought and have arrived at the conclusion that over the years they have gotten worse instead of better. Yes it’s true that the quality of product has been in steady decline overall but that is no excuse, there is still excellent quality product out there that is deserving. The real problem with the nominations is the arbitrary nature in which they are decided. AVN sets guidelines but doesn’t follow them. Take for example Tera Patrick being inducted into the Hall of Fame. AVN guidelines state that you must have ten active years in the industry, Tera doesn’t. Unless she started the biz on or before Sept 30th (AVNs Deadline) 1998 she isn’t qualified, and she isn’t, she started in 1999. Even if you use Jan 1st 2009 as the date she still doesn’t qualify. Now I’m not saying Tera doesn’t deserve to be in the Hall of Fame, ABSOLUTELY she does, no question about it, but by AVNs own guidelines she doesn’t qualify till next year. Now lets take our own Kayden Kross, she had no videos out in 2006, 1 out during the qualification period in 2007 this year is when the bulk of her new work came out. She didn’t get nominated when she clearly should have, specially when you consider that Lexi Belle who started in late 2005 and had well over 60 movies out by 2007 did get nominated this year. Then you look at Nikki Jayne, she has ONE movie out during the qualification period and she gets nominated. This category is the one that year after year reeks the most of foul play. Now you may say that well Kayden got nominated for THE most prestigious award AVN has…Female Performer of the Year, but that does not negate the fact that she was clearly more qualified for best new starlet and there is no reason she couldnt be nominated in both categories, it happens every year almost. Now lets look at the nominations themselves, of all the categories only 6 had fewer than 7 nominations and of those none had fewer than 6. Could you people over there REALLY not narrow down Best Young Girl Series to fewer than 15 series? Dozens of categories had 15 or more nominations. Im sorry but that is just retarded. There is NO reason at all, ever for more than 6 nominees in any category. And while we are on the topic of nominations, how many of you knew that AVN lets companies nominate themselves? Thats right if you want a nomination you have to send AVN what you think is nomination worthy. Now do you really think THAT is objective? I say if AVN can’t remember from the review what was worthy….well it shouldn’t be nominated. And about the categories, do we really need an award for best dvd menus? for best high end all sex release? for best dvd extras? for best educational release? or categories for best release and best series for every niche market known to porn? Did it occur to you guys after last year that naming it the Jenna Jameson Crossover Award is no different than calling it the Traci Lords Crossover Award? Do you really want to continue to perpetuate THAT bad idea? And why not rename the Most Outrageous Sex Scene to the Most Disgusting Sex Scene, because that’s what always wins…or better yet there’s another good one to deep six. And are we really to believe that nobody was deserving of the Reuben Sturman Award this year, I mean after all y’all gave it to Rob Black for God’s sake. Isn’t Max or Ray Guhn or someone equally deserving? Are y’all starting to see the absurdity here? These awards no longer reward quality or innovation, they reward popularity and mediocrity and dare I say…Advertisers. And now AVN is adding Web based Awards…that’s a lot like the Academy Awards giving an award to the best automaker based on what the stars drive. Speaking of those web based awards, who pulled those nominees out of their ass? They aren’t reflective of anything and nobody at AVN is qualified to nominate anyone in one of those categories, after all they didn’t even know enough about the web to keep their nominations list where I couldn’t get it before they posted it. Think about it….. [Link] |

| Crucifixio_Jones Senior Member Arrogant & Obnoxious Narcissist 4727 Posts 10/03 | When I saw this year's nominations (the ones I even bothered to look over before I realized it was a tremendous waste of my time) at the risk of coming off as more bitter and cyincal than usual, I could've written a rant three times as long as Mike's here (before deciding it would also be an even bigger waste of my energy). I've followed the AVN Awards for many years and it's always provided it's fair share of tiny disappointments. But at least I could understand where a lot of the decisions that most people brushed off as nonsensical were coming from. This year I just don't get it. 2009 is going to be an all-around toss-up and I can't say I really care who wins what anymore. It'll be interesting to view the overall outcome but when the vast majority of the performances and performers you loved all year long aren't even nominated, it's difficult to become emotionally invested. |
| MythMaker Member Jada... the best thing in porn 919 Posts 7/07 | Does the casual consumer truly care who the art director is? Do they care that the star in this vid got an award for facials in that vid? And I'm pretty sure if a producer or director wants talent, both behind and in front of the camera, they can find the crew they need without looking for "that guy/girl/team who worked on such and such" to much acclaim. If the industry wants to look at itself as an artform, and these awards as appreciative of the efforts made by those involved, then it shouldn't be a parody of itself. I'm finding it interesting some of the things Mike said, as I honestly really hadn't thought of it much. |
| MikeSouth Deactivated User 511 Posts 11/02 | The AVN awards started out much like the academy awards in that the industry celebrated its best. It also was an effort to legitimize adult films, by having awards and all such as that it helped to make a case for legitimacy in courts. When the awards started to become a money making idea thats when everything started going downhill. They started adding categories and nominations lists got bloated and suddenly they found themselves with too much to do over too short a period so instead of weeding out categories and thining nominations they continued to grow and AVN chose to shorten the awards by giving the lesser ones on the night before the awards show. Then they started not reading all the nominees, just the ones that advertised the most, and they drastically cut who could make a speech. They even added more length by adding second rate entertainment and jacking the price of tickets beyond 200 dollars a person and selling them to the public, who oddly enough snapped them up. [By comparison for 200.00 bucks per person you could have a really nice meal AND take in "O" at the Bellagio getting FAR more entertainment value for your money] Now the awards are a thinly veiled parody of what they originally started out to be. Its all about making money, and make money it does....LOTS of it. Thats the real reason they have 15 nominees per category, so that all the companies can take out full page ads in january crowing about what they were nominated for. It isnt a lot different than that Kim Jong Il guy in North Korea, the North Korean Press reports that every time he plays golf he gets at least one hole in one. Il uses a gun to get them to print that Vivid just uses cash. |

| BSD Senior Member San Diego, CA 2508 Posts 11/03 | YOU are in adult videos? I had no idea. AVN never told me. I've been ingesting porn for almost 35 years, and this is the first I've known that you were a porn star. Here I thought that you were one of those hip-hop video hoochies. I thought all black women in media not named Oprah or Whoppi were. Well I'll be. BSD P.S. - Don't fret darlin', I salute you and award you damn near every week. Over the past 15 years you have prevented a lot of my children from being born. And your credentials as an adult actress of the first rank are without question. Hell, you are one of the few goddesses to ever keep me awake and interested through a John E. Depth scene. That's Hall of Fame worthy all by itself in my book. To hell with AVN. Your fans know. And I trust your peers do as well. Keep doin' what you do. I think I'm gonna go watch you and Slayer play again in "Phatty Girls 6" right now. |

| Eli Cross Member What's the fun of getting old if you can't be dirty? 141 Posts 4/06 | Are the awards perfect? Nope. But until XBiz or FAME or XRCO have their own nationally-broadcast awards, they are THE Awards. Ya don't like it, ignore them. Or better, find me popular media awards -- any media awards -- that people who work in the applicable industry don't think are rigged, and let's start there. There are a few "facts" mentioned in the rant that started all this I will take issue with, though:Wrong. The companies can suggest their own nominations (just like the Oscars and Emmys and Grammys), which go into the list with all the pre-noms that are kept by the magazine during the course of the year. It's no guarantee of a nomination. The point is to provide a mechanism for companies to request consideration for something they think might have gotten overlooked, or gotten an unfair review. It's a perfect example of AVN getting slammed for something intended to make the process more fair.Hmmm. Well, I wasn't around for the inside scoop on this one, but my guess is naming the award after Jenna gives them an excuse to stop giving it to Jenna every year! Really, other than Ronny, who's even in that competition? This seems like a no-brainer to me.No, since you don't care about it, the people who do that work should just be ignored completely. I believe that sums up your argument, right?Since the web is a delivery system, I would say it's a lot more like the Academy giving out awards for technical achievement in camera technology, film and video stock improvements, sound mixing technology, editing tech, media encryption and DVD authoring. Which they do, every year. It all happens during the Academy Technical Awards, which are the night before the Oscars, and not broadcast. And finally...There it is. I'm not gonna reprise my entire rant about how convinced I was that the awards were rigged before I took the job running the joint. It's here, go look it up. I'll simply re-state some math nobody likes to pay attention to. Corruption: 7 awards including Best Video, Director and Actress, beating all the majors. Upload: 8 awards including Best Video, Actress and Supporting, again beating all the majors. Ads taken by SexZ Pictures during that 2-year period: two pages per month, and two or three 1/3 strips per month. You compare that to the amount of ads taken by the people we beat and then explain to me that the equation is simple, e.g ads=awards. In closing, let me once again briefly take on the subject of Best New Starlet. This is, and always has been a no-win situation for AVN. You have to understand that the editors at the magazine aren't in the business; they are adjacent to it. They don't produce, they don't direct, they don't go to that many sets. They're buried under movies to review, and often get what they're assigned, not what they might choose. They also don't cruise the review sites or this board to see what other people think. It's not arrogance, it's just that the magazine isn't for fans; it's a trade mag. I'm not trying to be a prick (though it is a natural gift, so forgive me), but what the fans think isn't what the job is about. All that combined means editors often are completely unaware of new talent until their movies begin showing up for review. Given the nature of the modern business, where six months can equal a full career, that might mean a girl is already gone by the time the editors see her. It also means that year-long span from one nominations period to another is a loooong time. I can't tell you how many times in nominations a girl's name would come up for Best New Starlet, and the general impression was she hadn't really done enough to make a splash. By the following year, her moment had passed or she was retired. At one point we even considered making the award something given out monthly in the magazine, and then having those twelve girls compete for the annual award, but we realized that was opening a Pandora's Box that would lead to people wanting other monthly awards, and once a year was plenty for the kind of giref this post is all about. Here's the simple fact: in a year-long cycle based on video releases that can be 18 months old by they time they reach the magazine, Best New Starlet is a hit-and-miss proposition, and there's really no way around it. Back in the day, we got enormous grief for Kobe Tai winning. We had seven or eight screeners from Vivid in the office, and realized she was going to be huge, but when the nominations were announced, not a single one of those movies had yet been released. None of her movies had been nominated, but we still nominated her and got tons of flak when she won because "Vivid obviously bought it." Should we have nominated her? Who can say. It honestly didn't occur to us that it would be an issue because we'd seen a lot of her movies, and had we waited until next year, the complaint would have been "How can she be Best New Starlet? Hasn't she been around for two years?" Now, let's apply that argument to Kayden Kross. First, though, in the interest of full disclosure, I'll explain that this thread was started by Kayden's paid shill, a fact he chose not to mention in the midst of his tirade about fairness. I directed Kayden's first movie, and I like Kayden. She's a sweetheart. But I shot that in early 2007, and Vivid rushed it out (for them), releasing it (I believe) a few months later. She's now on her third contract as a performer, and well-established. A name player? Absolutely. New Starlet? Not a chance. Missed the sweet spot completely. I guarantee you had they nominated her, there would be an equal chorus of disapproval saying Adam & Eve bought the nomination because there's no way Kayden classifies as new talent. Okay, I fucking lied about brevity. But the rest is true. In the final analysis, no one will ever be happy with the awards, particularly the bitter outsiders with axes to grind, and it's always quicker and easier to stir up shit than it is to really analyze the situation. Are the awards a bit of a mess? Are there too many categories, and too many noms per category? Do things get snubbed or rewarded unfairly? Unequivocally, yes. The process is too massive and time-intensive to not be flawed. But I can also state unequivocally that it has always been -- in my experience -- done with the best of intent, without malice, and to the best ability of the people involved. And honestly, if you believe you could do a better job, you should try it. |

Fan sites like ADT are much better arbiters of who deserves "best of show" than reputed "experts" like AVN. Therefore, AVN is not so credible. Unfortunately, even if ADT did give awards, there's no budget for an awful, cheeseball, ass-blasting awards show to be edited down to nothing for the derisive laughter of the masses on Showtime. Hence, no one would notice or care? Is that how it really works? |

AVN doesn't know enough about the web to give these awards, that is evidenced by the categories they chose for awards and by the nominees they selected in those categories. Nobody who is adult internet savvy would have chosen those categories or those nominees plain and simple. As is usually the case and is certainly the case here what they chose as important enough for an award is a direct reflection of their lack of knowledge of the medium. Deal widdit. |

| MythMaker Member Jada... the best thing in porn 919 Posts 7/07 | I enjoy talking on this forum, and I'm the first to admit I know very little about the industry and most of the product out there. There appears to be an issue of who deserves to arbitrate the selections for various award worthy elements of a year in adult productions. When you get down to it, the most objective element any of these reviewers can use to decide who "deserves" to be awarded is what productions made them, in their particular, purely idiosyncratic fashion, get off. Reviewers can claim to have their finger on the pulse of an industry, and some have a healthy smattering of people who make decisions influenced by their critiques. Are they objective, probably not, they're excited. Are they informed - probably more than most as they spend an enormous amount of time watching. I think someone pointed out that every awards show has an agenda they're promoting. This includes the one reviewers would stage and the one the production companies would stage. At the end of the day, the world keeps turning, movies keep getting made, and only a smattering of people are going to remember who won best anal fisting in 2002 - whether that's AVN, XRCO, FAME, and on and on and on... I do enjoy this ongoing argument, but everyone has an agenda - and agreeing to disagree is the end of the line. |

| Jeff Mullen Member Hall of Famer -Time to get out 219 Posts 1/08 | Eli had a GREAT point I thought. We did not expect SexZ Pictures to win for Upload last year. We were all sitting at the table during the awards show drinking heavily I might add, and Eli had handicapped the entire award show on the program and although we hoped Upload would win Best Video Feature, we would not have been crushed if it did not. SexZ was not the biggest advertiser in AVN, we just won the year before for Corruption and they didn't have to 'give' it again to the same company. Nobody would have blinked an eye and they could have given it to one of their big paying advertisers. However, the voters actually voted for it, the movie won and we kept drinking all damn night. I agree that ADT has a completely different taste than some publications as far as what the readers like to watch. Our X-Play movies don't fare all that well in some reviews here but I dare anybody to find more than one movie that sold more DVDs than Not the Bradys XXX did this past year- even Cheerleaders. The first Pirates most likely sold many more DVDs though but it would be hard to find another movie that beat us. Most companies can only dream of sales numbers like we received and are still getting but did you know that we only won a single AVN Award? Guess what the fuck it was for? Drum roll please.......Best Menus. Seriously! So fuck those who say get rid of categories like that. We didn't win jack and adding insult to injury we lost for Best Marketing Campaign yet I don't remember a movie that received more national television exposure than our Brady flick did. I could have been pissed off and thought this must be rigged but Upload leveled my thought process by winning when it didn't have to. It won because it was fucking original and the voters thought it was the best. Lastly, the AVN Awards (and the XRCO, XBiz, NightMoves and others) mean a great deal to us 'fucks' that have no life other than working all day and all night on our movies so if you don't like the AVN nom results, please continue to express you opinion because I like reading them late at night and you are certainly entitled to voice your thoughts. Fixed? I say no fucking way. Flawed? Like Eli says most likely but it sure is fun to go to Vegas, have some drinks and take your best shot. Will X-Play win anything for Not Bewitched XXX which received 19 noms? Probably not but who knows and all we can do is get ready for the next production. I think AVN still has a ton of integrity and is populated by people trying to do the best job possible. Really lastly (sorry) I agree with Nate- the silent killer of the porn business is free porn (authorized or pirated). If we don't attempt to stop this or get some type of control of it, there will be no awards to talk about in the future because the porn industry as you know and love it is going to go bye bye. Drum roll please. |

| bono-ONE All-Star Member SAMCRO 8571 Posts 8/00 | I do happen to vote for the XRCO's and take doing that seriously and have characteristics I look for from a girl/ scene that might potentially be a nominee I'd support. Having visited a lot of sets now over the last few years I've had a pretty good backstage look at what goes on, goes into, doesn't work so far as scenes go and this has definitely helped me in watching porn and critiquing it. I know there is so much that goes into making a successful scene, it's not just turning on the camera and filming the sex, that might be the easiest part and that even has it's starts and stops. A lot goes into a scene from doing the makeup, lighting the set-- usually more than once, pausing for the girly stuff, stills, doing softcore-- the average fan doesn't see all this, maybe some of it in the BTS but try being on a set for 5-6 hours or maybe 12-14 and see all that goes on, it just might change how you look at porn a bit, give you a better appreciation for it. I wish everyone luck in the upcoming awards, I do know how hard you folks work from the makeup artists to the C-light holder, the set coordinator/ location manager, the director/ performers, etc. It's a huge collaborative effort or it should be to make up a good successful scene and the AVN awards, XRCO, etc. are chances to say to you all a job well done. I'm happy to be a part of giving such recognition and look forward to doing this for the next few years I hope. The fantasy for me has never gotten old and as long as this is the case I'll be watching and spreading the good word and occasionally voting for an award or two for a job well done. I'd be really happy if the moderators of ADT would put together an ADT awards of some type. As informal or formal as people wanted. Anything from a Rog Reviews type poll (maybe open it up to anyone who has more than 50 posts) to a more organized thing where any members with more than 1000 posts can receive screeners of movies picked as nominees by a selected ADT panel. At the end of the day, my friends in the business make movies for a few reasons: to hopefully enjoy our jobs and to make porn that fans enjoy for whatever reason they choose to watch porn. If those two things happen, the people in the business will hopefully make money and be able to continue doing what makes them happy. The awards are a nice icing on the cake. We're still not really part of mainstream society, so it's a time when we can celebrate what we do. And yes, they work as a nice marketing tool. PS- I did, however, enjoy being a dork in my last post typing 3 acronyms in a 9 word post. Edited to add not in the sentence about not being part of mainstream.
