I'm a fan of the classic early film, and had a few questions about it for the brain trust here of porn fans:
1) Did Marylin really faint during her climactic scene? If so, is that scene still in the film and we just aren't aware of it due to the psychedelic effects going on? Or was it cut out?
2) Has the soundtrack ever been released on CD?
3) I've heard that there is a true story behind the idea of the film. Supposedly, American GI's in WWII started a secret porn story called Behind the Green Door that was mimeographed and passed from person to person, who were encouraged to add their own story elements, until the underground epic was known by many in the service and even inspired a hit song that was a nod and a wink at the story's existence. If this is true - has anybody seen evidence of our read any of the stories in "Behind the Green Door"?

Some places on the internet do state that it was based on a GI story. For instance, off of the IMDB mini biography for Artie Mitchell, "Behind the Green Door (1972), one of the classics of the genre, is based on an anonymous GI novella that used to circulate in barracks after WWII (and was the subject of a hit song in the 1950s that non-military types did not understand)." While not during WWII Artie did have a brief stint in the Army and could have come across such a story. And according to my review on the credits from the story, "uncredited adapted from an anonymously written story." However, no where can I actually find any citation of where this comes from. So it may be nothing more than internet rumor.

I've wondered that too, if it was just on the internet, but at the same time it's an interesting and plausible idea that at least has a ring of truth. Erotica is something has kept it's underground status for so long that I could see something like that having existed at one time and just spread as people duplicated the story and talked about it (like the infamous "Kilroy Was Here" drawings).
I'm guessing though that if people haven't heard about it here, then if it exists its still quite underground.
(Though thinking about it - could the "sex-aid book" that was utilized as a plot device in American Pie be a nod to the idea of the hidden book or sexual knowledge?)

I would certainly say it is plausible.

Learn something new every day. I always thought since it was the Mitchell Bro's and set in the City that the movie was based on this place on Stockton & Bush Streets. Haven't seen it though. Marilyn and the Mitchell's were never worth seeking out, but maybe I'll rent this one.

Thought I'd quote from the current Wikipedia entry which has some interesting Green Door info:

If she did indeed faint, it wasn't part of the intended production so I doubt it was shot. Also, I'm assuming you're referring to the psychedelic cum-shot. That's optical printing and was done in post production.
Unfortunately, it has not. Even more deserving of an album than DOOR is Jon Fontana's RESURRECTION OF EVE.

Was former NFL player Ben Davidson's cameo the first time a pro-athlete and mainstream personality ever appear in a porn film?
