If you are looking for the best cinematography and direction, you are best to go with the directors Andrew Blake, Michael Ninn, Cameron Grant, and Philip Mond.
But be forewarned that Blake can be an acquired taste. He is the furthest thing from nasty. He sees himself as an artist, celluloid is his canvas, and he is painting erotica art. Of the DVDs currently available, my recommendation would probably go with NIGHT TRIPS.
Ninn's films are very well made. But he tends to go crazy with the digital computer capabilities. Ninn gives you all the heat that Blake lacks, but his films aren't as beautiful. I would recommend Ninn's NEW WAVE HOOKERS 5, but I have trouble stomaching the hedgehog's character in it. So I would recommend LATEX instead, one of his first.
Cameron Grant is somewhere in the middle. His films look like Blake made them, but they are more the typical adult fare -- facials, heat, etc. My fav here is ELEMENTS OF DESIRE, with probably the greatest blowjob on film.
Finally, there is Philip Mond. Mond is a regular Penthouse photographer. After directing a couple softcore flicks for the mag, Metro signed him to make some films for them. So far, the only one to come out is ZAZEL. In my opinion, the best adult film ever made. As you say, "from a filmmaking pov."
