I think for me he made several very strong films so it is hard to pick one as the overall 'best' and I'm unsure what the consensus pick among feature fans would be. I think we can safely exclude Deep Throat, no matter how successful and incredibly influential and important the film is, I think most would agree with Damiano to some degree when he said he thought the film was 'a piece of shit.' Maybe some wouldn't go that far but I can't see putting it even his top 5 considering how strong his other films are: The Devil In Miss Jones Memories Within Miss Aggie Portrait The Story of Joanna Odyssey: The Ultimate Trip People Skin-Flicks Fantasy The Sastisfiers of Alpha Blue I'd have to say that Let My Puppets Come is in a class all by itself. I think there's a good argument to be made that Devil in Miss Jones may be his masterpiece but I'd say that Odyssey: The Ultimate Trip continues to impress me and The Story of Joanna is a mind-blower. Night Hunger was a very well made a film told in flashback to Jerry Butler by a bartender as he sits in a bar. Odyssey was another good one good one just about every New York actor at the time was cast in this one. Never So Deep one of the few films he did on the West Coast. The Satisfiers Of Alpha Blue was a fun film and I liked the cast. Jerry Butler in his book Raw Talent would go onto say that shot on video pretty much did Gerard Damiano in however he made an excellent one which I paid $5.00 at an adult bookstore in Hollywood,Ca to watch titled Candy's Little Sister Sugar which Ariel Knight (a.k.a. Tami White) turned in a career performance and John Leslie (R.I.P.) was his usual outstanding self. I'm sorry I never purchased this title. Gerard Damiano hairdresser turned pornographer pretty much owned by the mob remember he was credit as the director for Waterpower when in fact the film was directed by Shaun Costello. The dour 'classy' tone can be a bit over-reaching but seems part and parcel of being a 'knock-off' of The Story of O. I appreciate that the scene between Colt and Jamie is even there, also adds to the strange and dream like tone of the film. Too bad it seems curtailed, not sure why that is as Jamie did some other gay scenes and didn't seem have wood problems. On the flip side, I find the extreme close-ups of the Hall/Colt scene bizarrely abstract and interesting. Never seen anything else like it, clearly the result of Damiano trying to find a different way to shoot a sex scene, which he noted as one of the sources of his frustration in shooting xxx. I also love Terri Hall but I don't think she's a particularly strong actress in the 70s stable of actresses. She often seems stoned in the films I've seen, which kind of became her style and charm for me. It's interesting to think about other actresses who could have taken the role, although I think Hall's dancing ability and delicate beauty adds to the film. I saw my first porn film in the late-70s, and started watching more regularly in the early-80s. Do you think porn was already becoming less experimental and more commercial by 1980? I've always assumed I first encountered porn during its Golden Age. (My porn career basically started with Seka's first full-length film.) But I now realize that– for all practical purposes– I missed the 70s. I've seen "Deep Throat", "Devil in Miss Jones", and the Mitchell Brothers "Behind the Green Door", as they are considered classics. Still, the only one I saw in a theater was "Deep Throat" and this was on a college campus, where it would not have been appropriate for me to experience the film as intended. [Link] |

A report on the frequency of rape portrayals in xxx to the Meese Commission found that it had declined signifcantly from the mid 70s peak to a low by the early 80s. This probably had something to do with the more well founded criticisms of feminists of the 'rape as turn on' scenes. Retrospectively this may seem counterintuitive as the early 80s are when Phil Prince's infamous films kicked in but a broad view of the industry confirms it I think (note the change in approach by Weston, Costello and Spinelli by the early 80s compared to their early work for instance). Damiano had a decent enough actress in Spelvin, who obviously was game for all the crazier crap that she does in that film. Snakes and all. I agree with everyone in terms of the Story of Joanna. Looks like Damiano had more money to work with but that did not translate into a flick better than Miss Jones or Miss Aggie. In my Dad's stash of books, I recently found a John Simon collection of his '70s movies reviews called REVERSE ANGLE and he reviews Story of Joanna in between reviews of Cuckoo's Nest and Barry Lyndon. As usual, he's pretty harsh especially on Hall and Gillis saying "...they look like two nice Jewish kids who have nothing of the lovely maiden in distress and the homme fatal about them." He abandons the film almost altogether to instead go on a rant as to why porn and porn actors fail. ---T0MB--- . [Link] |
