With the continued onslaught of mostly average and downright shitty XXX parodies and adaptations of well known "mainstream" material, I think it would be nice to put together a thread about quality parodies and adaptations before every hack jumped on the bandwagon. So please list your favorite pre-2005 parodies and adaptations. Include the original source material and maybe even some thoughts about why you like it. Here are a few of my favorites: TAKE OFF - Directed by Armand Weston. A really wonderful satire of pop culture and movies like Casablanca and Bebel Without a Cause, all framed by The Picture of Dorian Gray. THE PASSIONS OF CAROL - Directed by Shaun Costello. Based on A Christmas Carol. SADIE - Directed by Bob Chinn. An adaptation of Somerset Maugham's Sadie Thompson, set in Vietnam era Borneo. STAR VIRGIN - Directed by Howard Ziehm. Parodies lots of pop culture TV shows and movies.
I liked BEAUTY (1982) that's Costello's take on Beauty and the Beast with Loni Sanders as Beauty and Jamie Gillis as The Beast. I loved PINK CHAMPAGNE (1979) with so much Hollywood stuff parodied in its 73 minutes.
Lust On The Orient Express- Directed by Tim Mcdonald. Good Mixture of veteran males and younger females. Didn't take itself too seriously and flowed well I thought. Little Miss Innocence- Directed by David McCabe. Good 3 person cast that played off each other well. Cautionary tale that says to be careful what you wish for. Sex Trek- Directed by Scotty Fox. Ok not a great film, but was the first of many Star Trek parodies over the years. Very low budget, but Jeanna Fine is always welcome in my book. Sunset Strip- Directed by Cash Markman. Another fun parody that didn't take itself too seriously. Jewel De'Nyle, Keri Windsor, Stevie, and Tommi Rose most certainly did it for me in it.
I never thought of this as a parody, but rather as an excellent adaptation. But, now you mention all the pop culture vignette take-offs, I see it. Wonderful film.Yes indeed! This I don't see. I really love the film, but I'm trying to figure out which TV shows and movies are parodied (aside from Dracula, of course, which isn't so much a parody but a reference). I may just be unfamiliar with these specific American TV shows/movies.
I really like M: Caught in the Act(2000) directed by Jonathan Morgan. It seems to be a parody of Madonna's "Truth or Dare" or maybe just docs about superstars in general. Serenity is great in it and it's just an all-around entertaining movie even without the sex. +1 to Sunset Strip. Not only is if fun picking out the parallels/spins between the original and the porn version, but Keri Windsor and Randy Spears end the movie with an incredibly hot sex scene (albeit with marred continuity) Morgan's flicks are jam-packed with media references, take-off, spins - whatever ya wanna label it. I don't think necessarily parodies, but johnlyons seemed to be perhaps getting a bit liberal with the definition. Where do movies like Double Feature, Bride of Double Feature, Hercules and Camp Cuddly Pines Massacre fall?
Haven't seen all those films Savoy, but did see the Double Feature films. I'd more call them adaptations, which provides much broader leeway. Still I get what your saying.
Agreed. "Parody" does have a specific definition, but of course it's been corrupted through everyday use so now it can mean pretty much any reference to another work, which is a bit boring/not useful. For me, Camp Cuddly Pines falls under the parody bracket, and is also very good (and just sneaks in at 2005).

Miss Directed was a somewhat successful sarcastic parody of a shitty, disjointed porno movie while also actually being a shitty, disjointed porno movie.
I would say that Morgan movies like Space Nuts and Camp Cuddly Pines are genre parodies rather than movie parodies. Back in the pre-gonzo early '90s, I feel like tons of movies were parodies because it was probably easier than thinking of something original. But those crappy Coast to Coast or Legend movies sometimes were just parody titles and didn't try very hard on the script level. They just wanted to cash in by having a movie called Buffy the Vampire Layer (off the movie, not the TV show), or Hindfeld or Juranal Park. I actually remember thinking during the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan business that it would be a porn movie within a couple of months. Sure enough, Tonya and Nancy, The Real Story eventually came out. It was predictably disappointing. Not much figure skating, for one thing. I also remember being kind of excited (ha!) for Smeers. Believe it or not, that's some kind of pun on Cheers. Tiffany Million was Diane, and I think Devon Shire might have been Carla. Kylie Ireland got me back into porn after a hiatus of a few years with one of my favorite parody titles ever: Face Jam. It was a dramatization of her real-life one-nighter with Michael Jordan. (Why that was of interest to me can't really be explained briefly. It isn't what you think.) I still have a Face Jam poster signed by Kylie. Someday I hope to have the opportunity to ask MJ to sign it too.
I don't understand all the hate towards modern parodies. I, in fact, welcome them. The real "plague" was the gonzo tsunami that came about in late 90s, when feature films were buried beneath tons and tons of crap.
I personally don't hate modern parodies by nature, but no one can deny the fact that most of them are dreadful. And even when they're not, they're rarely anything more than remakes of popular TV shows or movies with XXX added. The "parody plague" is a plague because, like gonzo, it has studios stuck in a rut. Virtually no one is creating original material. Parodies are the new gonzo. Everyone wants to make one, and very few do it well. I'm certainly not a fan of of about 99.5% of the cheap porn produced in the 90s through early 2000s, but that era also offered some pretty stellar features, some even on par with the masterpieces of the 70s/early 80s. Who's doing that today? Hell, even the early 2000s saw the prominence of excellent directors like Nic Andrews. There's certainly no one like him working today, and that's not to say that there aren't talented people out there, but that they're not creating original material. For instance, I just watched the trailer for THE ROCKI WHORE PICTURE SHOW and I felt like I was seeing a low-budget SOV remake, not even a parody. That's what I'm really sick of. If parodies are the order of the day, directors ought to at least bring some originality and thoughtfulness to what they make, not just copy someone else' work and add sex scenes.
Funny you mentioned this one. I was thinking the other day this is one movie that could never have a porn parody version, mainly because it's a musical. Is the parody a musical? If not, then what's the point? Not that I think that many porn stars can sing. This parody simply sounds like a terrible idea in the first place.

John, check out the recent feature Lost and Found by Eddie Powell, it is a well written, directed and nicely acted little romantic comedy with a real score. The sex scenes are longer than you like but they're also done completely in character and are quite sweet and sexy.
It does look like a musical. The songs appear to be slightly changed ripoffs of the original tracks, with sex lyrics (of course). "Let's Have an Orgy Again" anyone?
I have no connection to the real Rocky Horror, so I don't know if I'll be interested, but I liked Veronica Hart's Misty Beethoven musical. It wasn't that great really, but basically I gave it an A-plus-plus for effort, because they were doing their own singing and I found it charming.
I'm becoming more and more interested in checking out THE ROCKI WHORE PICTURE SHOW, especially now that I've read that the cast does indeed do their own singing. That's admirable and very rare. HOWEVER, to continue to be a contrarian, neither the linked review nor the trailer makes this movie seem like anything other than a remake that happens to have hardcore sex scenes. And that I don't need to see. The essence of a great remake is not to simply and faithfully recreate a pre-existing work (and perhaps change some minor details along the way), a great remake should be a standalone work, which doesn't rely entirely on the popularity or acclaim of the original to gain an audience. A great remake (like Carpenter's THE THING) is more than a remake. It's a re-envisioning or a re-interpretation. That's where these 'parodies' fail. For one, they're not actually parodies but X rated remakes, and secondly, they don't even succeed as interesting remakes.
Now, a movie that I knew could get a porn parody version is "Basic Instinct". Well, the porn parody is here. Hell, the original movie could have easily been a porno movie. The sex scenes just needed to be hardcore.
^Six hours? Are you serious? Most modern feature porno films aren't that long (most seem to have a running time of about four hours, which is still too long). This is why the sex scenes in feature porn need to be short. Keep the super-long sex scenes for gonzo films.
I just did, and you're right. That's ridiculous. The original movie is only 100 minutes long. Do you agree with me about the ideal length of sex scenes in feature porn?
^And it's not bad. It's a well-done homage especially because Kagney Linn Karter shows off her acting chops in huge way, really nailing Jodie Foster's role. She get Foster's mannerisms and expressions almost perfectly. The sex could be hotter and the story could be more twisted but it was enjoyable. I recommend it.
Thanks for creating this thread to point out that there have been some great porn parodies done and that its not a new thing. They have been doing porn parodies since the 70s. The problem today is that every company is cranking them out and doing a shitty job. Some of the older stuff was not really "parodies" meant to be funny. Some were just porn version knockoffs of popular movies. Here are some old classic porn parodies that were good: "8 to 4" porn parody of the 80s hit movie 9 to 5 "Sex World" a porn version of the scifi classic "Westworld". Multiple ripoffs of the TV show MASH -- "Smash'd" and "Nurses of the 407" "Vista Valley P.T.A." parody of 1970s "Harper Valley PTA" "Puss N Boots" porn version of Private Benjamin "Mystic Pieces" Buttman ripped off the title from Mystic Pizza but not really related to the original movie. "Lady Scarface" has Carmen Luvana parodying 80's cult classic "Scarface"
The "Vista Valley PTA" mentioned above is a little goofy in spots, but is an absolute powerhouse of golden age star turns - Juliet Anderson AND Kay Parker, for hevinssake! Plus Jamie Gillis and Sharon Kane as father and daughter.(!) Furthermore, it is a feature that goes out of its way to fearlessly tweak self-righteous "Moral Majority" bluenoses. And in that sense is a political feature - something that seemingly got steamrollered out of "the industry" by the Reagan era. It's arguably as good a film, really, as the "official" Harper Valley PTA movie. (The one with Barbara Eden.) What a pity that the only DVD version of the landmark feature "Vista Valley PTA" is such a wretched, technically incompetent effort.
The Nutech DVD I have from the 90's is dark, blotchy and blurry. The soundtrack is muddy and full of white noise. It seems like it was "mastered" from an old VHS tape. Perhaps they changed manufacturing, at some point?
Well, my goal is to encourage people to see these terrific features -- not to discourage them from it. So I'll just finish by adding that even the NUTECH version is a perfectly intelligible and serviceable DVD, and far from the worst reproduction I've encountered. (That honor would probably have to be some of the Vanessa DelRio stuff taken from funky 8mm loops...) Consider my complaint about DVD quality as just a plea for someone to go back and put out completely restored versions of such wonderful films as "Vista Valley PTA" someday.
