Taiyo-Yuden is the manufacturer DVD's for most of the major brand DVD companies. They are generally considered to be the best discs around. You don't need to buy a brand name disc to get quality. You can buy [ invalid url ] for a very reasonable price.

You can't record on those discs using a dvd camcorder. Those discs are manufactured in a duplication plant. The duplicator creates a glass master and then uses that glass master to physically impress the information in the plastic during the disc manufacturing process.
Rather than pressing the date physically into the disc, writable DVD's utilize a layer of dye above the plastic layer. The data gets burned into the dye.
You can tell the difference between a discs that are professionally duplicated and those that have been "burned" by the color of the bottom of the disc. "Burned" discs have a purple color to them. That's the dye. Replicated discs are typically silver or gold on the bottom, although some manufacturers have started having discs duplicated on discs with different colors in order to make it easier to detect pirated copies.
The long & short of it is that, if you want to record on DVD's, you will need to purchase recordable DVD's. Taiyo-Yuden is makes the best recordable DVD's.
