I don't want to buy a Blue-Ray player yet, but would like to get an upconverting dvd player to get a better resolution on my lcd tv. Which upconverting dvd player is the best on the market? I know the OPPO brand has been mentioned several times on this forum. Is it really the one to purchase?

If I were you, I wouldn't bother. If you ever intend on buying a Blue-Ray player, you might as well go ahead and bite the bullet if you simply can't wait. You're just going to be wasting your money on old technology (Unless you can find an upconverting player for super cheap).
If you really insist on it, I'd buy the cheapest one that gets good reviews.

WARNING - Avoid Samsung DVD players at all costs! I don't care how cheap it is it ain't worth it. I've had 3 Samsung DVD players and every damn one of them had one (serious) problem or another.

The OPPO DV-083H is the best upconverting player available. But, at $399, it's $100 more than the [ invalid url ] and $229 for the DV-981H, you're still getting close to Blu-ray territory as far as pricing is concerned. The upconversion in Blu-ray players is pretty good. But not as good as in the OPPO's.
The major benefit that you would get from the OPPO players is PAL/NTSC conversion and the ability to make them region free.

I recently bought an Oppo 980H. I wanted a new universal disc player to handle all the audio formats and didn't really care about video. However, I have to say I was shocked at how good the upconverted PQ for SD DVDs look. I'm amazed they can sell this unit for under $200.
You say you don't want to buy a Blu-Ray player "yet", but the upcoming Oppo might be worth waiting for if it's capable of the same SD DVD playback as their other models.

Upscaled DVD's....a poor man's Blu-ray ;-)
All kidding aside, playing my DVD's on my PS3 really makes my DVD look a lot better.
