One corporation, Hokuto, owns 14 non-nude studios, 12 sex toy production companies, and 90 adult studios. Porn actors are employees of Hokuto, not contractors like in the US, and as such, Hokuto takes care of STD testing. None of this AIM FAIL. What I like about JAV is that the cover girl is the only girl in the movie. So when Sora Aoi puts out a flick, I know every single scene will contain her and only her. Smaller studios do use multiple girls, but most of them time, those girls are all together in most of the scenes. So for example, if 2-3 girls pair up in a movie, they are in all or most scenes together, which means multiple males, too. Every year, they have something called the JAV GRand Prix. Every studio makes a movie as its entry and the winner, based on sales as well as viewer votes, gets about $25,000. Given Hokuto owns 90 studios, most studios ARE competing against each other. The winning title was from S1 with Rio (half-Japanese, half-latina) and Yuma Asami. The girls didn't have sex (though they came damn close, look at the pics), but they were paired up in every scene, having sex with at least one and up to four guys per scene. And the movie went 4 hours. Hoktuo also owns DMM, the biggest adult retailer in Japan. Every month, six months and year they release their top sales lists, in DVD purchases, rentals and digital downloads. That's pretty much how JAV fans rank the top girl in the biz. Topping the list for about the past year is Yuma Asami, who has a body like Christy Canyon but comes off like a Disney kids actress in interviews. You likely won't understand a word of this interview, just keep in mind this bubbly goofball is the biggest-selling porn star in Japan. This is Japan's biggest porn star and she behaves more like Miley Cyrus. But God that body...  Hot on Yuma's cute ass is Akiho Yoshizawa, who I think is the prettiest girl in JAV.  A few years ago, I was drawn to JAV by the double threat of Yua Aida and Sora Aoi. In the US, when we have two big name porn stars, the logical step is put them together in a movie and have them fuck, right ("Jenna Loves Janine", etc)? Well there's no gay for pay in Japan, so this was as close as they got.  Rats. But if they aren't into girls, then I say don't do it. Sora is adorable and sports an outstanding boob job.  But Yua... holy hell.  In 2007, Yua retired, walked away and hasn't been seen since. The Japanese are like that. They move on and fade out of stardom far easier than most folks. Sora is still around but makes about one movie every 3-4 months. She is trying to make a transition to mainstream work and doing decent. She's been in movies, mostly softcore, TV comedies and recently did a play that had her rehearsing for months. I've been disappointed with Sora. While Yuma would would do 5 sex scenes in a movie, Sora would have 2 sex scenes, and the other three would be hand jobs, blow jobs or titty fucking. I felt she was being lazy, but she DID make S1 a success. It launched in 2004 and is now huge and she was one of the launch stars. So was Yua and Maria Ozawa, the only JAV girl anyone seems interested in around here. Maria's movies have gotten progressively rougher in recent years, and JAV fans just don't like seeing Maria being abused, pissed on and crying in her movies. Can't imagine why... In the half year 2009 DMM list, Maria didn't crack the top 100. Yua Aida, retired for 2 years, was at #79 (Yuma was #1, Acky #2). Clearly she's fallen out of favor. There is a funny side to this. Recently, a Japanese company started translating the blogs of several girls into English. Maria's blog is the most popular running away, mostly because she is so well-spoken in her writing. She really comes off well. Another popular blogger is Shelly Fujii, who is either 1/2 or 1/4 Japanese (we're still debating that on the JAV board) and 100% kooky. I can't compare it to anyone, even Yuma. Asia Carrera in her porn days wasn't this goofy. Now, why don't they work here? One reason: $$$. A while back, a list of actress salaries leaked. Some where making up to 2.5 million yen per movie. That's $25,000. Who in the US is going to bring an unknown Japanese girl, even Yumi or Sora, to the U.S. and pay her $25,000? Who makes that kind of scratch now? Plus, this is where things get weird. As long as a JAV girl sticks to censored porn (mind you, her pussy and the penis are pixilated, but her asshole is NOT covered and you can see her starfish clearly) and doesn't do anything rough like Ozawa is doing, they often have mainstream careers. That's why Yuma, Sora, Acky (her nickname) keep it very, very vanilla. It allows them to have semi-mainstream careers where they make an extra buck. Another gal, Mihiro, was recently cast in the third Ju-On movie. She'd never have that chance if she was making the same kinds of movies as Maria Ozawa. Mihiro and another porn girl, Aino Kishi, are in a low-budget splatterfest called "Samurai Princess" If you liked the movie "Versus," then this is for you. If you don't like gore and splatter, avoid. So really, the money and opportunities in Japan are just way too much for the Porn Valley to overcome. The only thing that could make a JAV girl come here would simply be a desire on her own to give it a go, and that would be if she has no aims or ambitions back home. I can't say for certain they would blackball her from the industry but I can't see how working here would help her in anyway, especially after that last HIV outbreak. Also, the girls make a huge number of public appearances. The studio schedules in-store appearances all around the Tokyo area to sign DVDs, and girls can make up to 20 public appearances a month. It takes 1-2 days to make a movie and most top-tier and even second-tier girls make 1-2 movies a month. So it's very easy to send those girls all around metropolitan Tokyo for autograph sessions. A guy I know tells me that a lot of JAV girls come to LA but to relax and unwind, sightsee and play tourist. They know about the porn biz and make no attempt to contact World Modeling or anyone else. Mostly they hang around Japantown and go to the tourist sites. I've got a photoshoot of Yua Aida lying on a car in the middle of a desert, and the car has California plates. Looks like they went out to Mojave or somewhere between LA and Vegas.  So it seems to me they are not interested in working here. One last thought. Why not just have the Porn Valley license the movies and sell them here? First, they would have to pay an acquisition cost and translate them. That's expensive. If you are an anime fan, you know how expensive those DVDs are. Second problem is the Japanese studios will NOT allow their movies to be sold without the pixilation, which will cost them about 95% of the audience even with English subtitles for the dialogue. Most people will not tolerate the pixilation. So I can't see how anyone could resell JAV in this country and make money on it. Not with DVD ripping.
