I rarely get vexed about the production quality of porn DVDs but a couple of recent purchases had me quietly seething.

I bought a couple of Black Widow's GGG editons recently.one of which I reviewed here (Attenition! Cum-Shower Warning!), the other (Have You Swallowed Today?) I can barely bring myself to watch, so bad is the picture quality. Grainy, garish images laden with the artifacts of excessive compression do not make an easy viewing experience. NB This, of course, makes absolutely no reference to the contents of the movie itself!

The general production of both discs leaves a lot to be desired - the menus look amateurish, there are no extras, just the opening titles presented as a trailer!

Not that much more than trailers were ever offered on the German editions, but at least they have improved their picture quality over time - Have You Swallowed Today? by contrast suffers badly from being hideously over-compressed, using only 3.42GB of a DVD-5 disc for a movie that's only just over 1 hour long! DVD-9 mean anything to you?

One could argue that you get what you pay for (the above discs being on offer at around the $16 mark) but given the generally decent quality and the ease with which at least semi-pro standards in DVD authoring can be achieved, I have to warn fellow readers of the poor quality of Have You Swallowed Today? in particular.

I wonder if this is indicative of the standard of the other GGG discs from Black Widow? Are they being edited?

Using 3.42 GB for just over an hour of video should have resulted in a standard DVD quality disk. There's probably a problem somewhere else in the process to create the picture problems you describe. Consider this: Most porn disks squeeze 6 or 7 GB onto a DVD 9 and can achieve at least 3 hrs of good quality video.

Picman, I take your point 100% that the file size alone does not explain the problem (it could be down to numerous things including source footage and methods used for the PAL-NTSC transfer) but perhaps for me to be inexpertly speculating about the causes is getting away from the point, which is simple - as your observation about the significantly better results that are being achieved pretty much as standard confirms, why are Black Widow offering a product that falls some way below the industry standard?

In a nutshell, I would simply like to make fellow readers aware about this movie, and ask the company concerned what's up with their product.

I haven't watched the Black Widow dvds yet, but to me the Pal to NTSC transfer might be the #1 problem. Every time I watch a porn video that's been tranferred from Pal to NTSC or the other way around, the picture quality is poor.

Several Shiva/Night Trips editions of Evil Angel or RLD material come to mind.

If you live in Europe, where (correct me if i'm wrong), most tv sets can read both pal & ntsc format, purchasing (porn) discs that have been transferred is definitely not recommended.

The orinal GGG DVDs I've seen suck in quality too... It's underground and people are not supposed to care about technical things like this. Since it's still expensive - download everything you can! Don't take this shit...

I've noticed this aswell with the few GGG titles I have rented.
Very poor quality abounds in every movie I've seen.
It would be nice to have a list of the movies that arent ruined with poor picture quality.
I dont blame anyone for downloading the stuff. It's the same video quality when you download it off the web anyway.

Most of them are "grainy", and they sometimes look like they've been compressed a bit too (no pixelation though) but it's not so important to me : on the plus side, i credit JT dvds for the sharp color contrast, that usually makes for the negative aspects.

The content is excellent but I agree the quality is piss poor. It's gotten to the point to where I just ignore GGG. It's worth nothing to me if I can't stop thinking about how terrible the quality is long enough to enjoy the content. Wasn't the whole point of DVD to make better quality results more of a standard result?

Ive never heard of this "Black Widow" GGG set up. I have alot of older GGG stuff, and some of it is sub par in quality, but they are also 2nd gen. videos...but all of the 666 stuff I have is pretty good quality wise, but they are DVDs...and they are PAL...I had to go out and buy a DVD player that would handle them. (Great investment)...no, the quality is not that of big budget domestic porn, but its certainly passable...at least by my standards...I got my stuff thru EuroDVD, they are very reasonable and fast.

Black Widow is (was?) the distributor of GGG in the US. They sell NTSC versions. The only thing that made these attractive to me over the PAL editions was cost, the sterling to US dollar exchange rate being more favourable than sterling to euro.

Interesting to note the latest NTSC GGG discs do not have Black Widow's name on them at all, so it does make me wonder about their provenance. I will avoid further speculation.

I've watched the GGG series on and off for several years and while the picture quality on the PAL versions, either on VHS and later on DVD, is inconsistent it's still better than these NTSC versions. I just find it unfortunate that while they continue to offer potentially interesting and outrageous material, GGG movies still have the tendency to inhabit the world of the back-alley porn rip-off.

I'm surprised you bought the versions released by BW instead of buying the original versions released by JT. I know BW also released the Kinky Wrinkly serie but I bought the original version (released by Playhouse) simply because I was afraid the transfer would not be good.

Ramsey, as I said in my last post, it was purely made attractive on grounds of cost. You can get new releases from X-Rent for as little as $16.99 or so, compared with Euro 24.95 at Ero DVD. But I won't be doing that again.

Sorry I missed your early response, I'm a too fast reader sometimes. As for the price, yes erodvd.nl are more expensive but a lot of the time they have discounts on JT/GGG/666 and they only cost 20 euro. Still more expensive of course. I personally don't buy them a lot anymore ever since Betty retired. For me she was the ultimate JT girls but I digress.

Betty was incredible! Do they make "Betty Extrem" on DVD? My VHS copy is worn out.

Gabriel,

I'm not so up to date concerning bw productions but Ric Williams of Black Widow posted here some months ago (also when he was still working for Private USA). The website is down, but here is an email address of Ric I suppose:

Maybe he has an explanation...

Secluded Observer, thanks for that. The BlackWidowProductions.com website appears to be unavailable as the domain name has passed its expiry date and nameservers appear to have been changed. Maybe someone just slipped up on paying renewal fees but I am not hopeful a message will actually make it to Ric. I'll drop him a line anyway and see what transpires.

Jacco, that's because the domain registration was renewed yesterday, and so site is back online when nameservers have been returned from the GoDaddy parking servers.

I sent Ric an email - hope he can take the chance to comment.
