Following many years watching, and a couple of years reviewing porn on this very site, I consider myself a porn connoisseur and certainly not someone who would choose a title based solely on the box cover.
However, I'm sure its influenced my choices in the past and probably still has a subliminal influence.
Has anyone out there purchased a film purely because of the picture on the box and could people mention some of their favouraite box covers.

I'm a big believer in a box, front and back, sells a DVD.
Now with that said, I don't necessarily review the cover, but I do look at it and if it's misleading I deduct points.
Little shit don't matter, for example, if it says "120 action packed minutes" and it's 118 or 119 minutes, but if it came up like 100 minutes and had 20 min of extras.... I would take off. Same with advertising a girl on the cover and he's not in it, or advertising an act that doesn't take place. You know stuff like that.
Forgot to add
I don't buy porn these days, but I do normally pick what to review by the cover, cast and director.
Why do certain girls get the box cover? It is not always the hottest or the youngest etc... Sometimes it seems almost at random who gets the cover. Also, is strange to me that some boxes show dick etc... on the cover, but others so not. Is interesting to me as a marketing student to see what the covers look like,
1. Red Light District has great covers, they have clear concise color patter, brand identification, and the phot of the girl is usually real sexy, but leaves you wanting more (in this case to see her get fucked.)
2. Evil Angel's makes good stuff, but their box covers are too busy in my opinion. They look almost cartoonish. While RLD makes you think they are profesional company Evil Angel box cover's come off as hammy.
3. A lot of box covers do have false advertising, especially low end stuff from random companies or really cheap DVD's they are usually BS. With RLD you get what they you get, if it says Teagan is doing anal she will be squeeling in the DVD.
Box covers turn me away more often than not. I don't think the images are selected with my demographic in mind.
The exception is features. I like to know the synopsis before I pick something out, so the more descriptive the better.
Last, I get really pissed off if the cover makes no mention the male talent. I want the male cast listed somewhere on the cover so I can make quick decisions whether or not I want to rent, without having to do a thorough dick inspection of each picture. I know a few cocks on sight, but that doesn't help if you can't see the whole thing. Much easier to have the dude's name right there on the cover.
Studios may not have the same box cover design, but there formats for the most part are the same. What makes me pick up a release is the type of girl featured and the theme of the release. The back is just confirmation of my interest as to why I picked it up in the first place. If the back looks nasty, then I will pick it up.
Turn 'em in to your local school district. The company will donate school supplies in return for 'em.
P.S. Dayamn Kami, you look hot in your new avatar! I also clicked and checked out your free gallery, some awesome pornographic photos there. But the giant gory dildo--YIKES!!!
DOYLE, you work for RLD? Yes RLD is or was a great studio, but far too many posts by you are the same tone, always supporting RLD, saying how great RLD is while every other studio isn't. Just a question I had to ask.
Now, I will agree that RLD has some nice covers. Evil Angel has nice covers. But with RLD, I used the covers to determine purchases/reviews. Evil Angel I used name of director, since director is my main buying point. The cover is gravy.
I have also purchased many she-male DVDs based purely on cover, and that there is one of the worst ways to buy that genre, because they can make the stars look better on the cover than in action.
So yes, I have purchased mainly she-male DVDs based upon cover alone, since reviews were non existent. I have also used boxcovers to determine which DVD I would buy ahead of another DVD by the same director.

I will admit I am a big RLD fan and have talked to a few of their directors, but no i am not an employee or anything, no formal relationship. But I believe RLD is marketed really well, and I have always been drawn to their product, I am not sure that will be the same after all those directors left, that could change things. But yeah I have been a big fan of their stuff, for a lot of reasons.
As far as the she male thing, i wouldn't know...but whatever floats your sailboat is chill.
When I used to rent a lot, box covers were the only thing I had to go on to let me know what to expect to see in the movies. I didn't have the internet at the time so I couldn't very well look up a review.
I got to the point to where I didn't trust box covers though, for a variety of reasons. Some box covers would show a lot of heavy anal and when I actually watched the movie, there was very little actual anal in it. "All anal" as I came to realize, didn't necessarily mean all anal (oddly enough. More often, it merely meant there would be at least 20 seconds of anal in each scene (which is not exactly what I expect when a box cover says "ALL anal").
And then, there's often the issue of the pictures looking *much* better than the actual footage. Sometimes, the angle the still for the box was taken from is completely different from the angle the actual footage shows....which is kinda irritating if you got it specifically because you liked the angles you saw on the box cover.
Even with the internet, porn is still hit or miss. You have to watch a lot of it to figure out what you like and who makes the stuff you really like. You'll see a lot of stuff you don't care for and might even discover some things you didn't even know you liked. I still think box covers are important and refer to them to get a general idea of the contents but I mostly stick to studios and directors I really like....maybe taking a chance and grabbing something a bit different every now and then, just for variety and the odd chance that I'll find someone new that I really like.

The stills on the box are almost never shot from the action in the scene. They're usually reenactments taken just before the cumshots are delivered. All too often they have little to do with what transpired or what will be in the final edit. I hate this practice, mostly because it halts scenes at their climax. Leave the stills for the "pretty girls" and cull the action shots from screencaps.

I disagree.
The box-covers were what initially attracted my attention, the more hotties the better.
Evil Angel was one of my early faves, especially Rocco's movies.
I also believe it's better to not play favorites with the stars. I've heard a few girls get pissed about not getting the cover.
As far as RLD is concerned, their professionalism is in question with me. One movie was missing a bonus scene (Cumfart Cocktails 2) and Ass Attack 2 they misspelled Leah Stevensons name (Leah Stevens?).
That being said, I am a fan of both companies, flaws and all.
I think Zero Tolerance and Third Degree have really started to set a standard with box covers. They're not always the best for information, but in terms of a quality picture, with vibrant colors, that stands out and catches your attention, I don't think you can beat them right now. They have such a solid formula, and these days, on the shelves at least, where everything looks the same, I think they stand out the best.
I also think its interesting how they tend to use medium shots, or shots with the girl bigger on the box, as I really think it makes their boxes more uniform, and bolder, in addition to them using so few colors. RLD and PXP's boxes have a lot of full body pics now where the girls look a lot smaller, and they don't catch your attention as much.
I might buy this one based on the box cover alone, if I can't find it at a local rental store. Of course the box cover has pictures from all of the scenes and a thorough cast listing as well.
Usually I buy DVDs that I have rented, unless I trust the director, company, and performers.
I never purchase movies simply because of a particular starlet. While they certainly help in deciding, its only after I've determined the movie targets my specific interests. To decipher the BS from fact, I use the main selling points, of what it states the movie has, to often distinguish with considerable accuracy, what it doesnt have.
Rarely will a movie not select an avenue to appeal to. One that touts facials for all, or where each starlet can be seen on the back with cum on her face, obviously has no internal cumshots. If it says facials anywhere, don't expect swallowing, unless it too is stated, in which case expect minimal. If your looking for an anal flick, and even one image on the back has a dick in a pussy, it may have some, but its most likely not hardcore anal.
I don't find much blatant false advertising these days, but if I do, I make the store aware of it.
I'm still misled on occasion, as nearly all are prone to trickery, but I find most studios generally try to appeal to your best interests at heart.
The key is, making sure that those interests, are yours.
Hmmm....interesting. I did not know this. I always thought that perhaps they had a still photographer there during the action shooting at the same time as the footage was actually shot.
I do think screen caps from the actual footage would more accurately represent the content. But then, it might put some people off because screen caps are sometimes lacking in quality. A box with a bunch of grainy looking caps might put some people off just as much as anything else.
Well I know sometimes pictures are taken during shoot b/c you can see the flash, and in BTS you can see them shooting one camera taking stills during the action, this may be rare though. However, I know all the Cum Glazed box covers were pictures taken after the bukkake. But yeah a lot of time the girl on the cover looks have beeen substantially enhanced.

I appreciate an aesthetic box cover and it does influence me in some way alright though not my choices whether to get a movie or not. But if a box cover makes you look twice it has already done its job. There could be thousands of movies out there you would enjoy but if you never stumble across them for some reason chances are low you'll get them, right?
Personally I don't need a shitload of stuff on the front cover. Just a nice pic of a girl or two prominently placed, (t)he(i)r correctly spelt name(s), a simple unicoloured background, preferably white, a cast list in some corner and, to make it perfect, something that makes me recognize the studio/series immediately without yelling it at me.
No need to use huge letters for the cast list. If you give me a cover that grabs the eye I will look for the unobtrusive information in the corner myself.
No need to shout "You have never seen this before" because I know myself what I've seen and seldom buy the same movie twice.
No need to tell me "You won't believe your eyes". If I really believed the world was blurred would I wear glasses?
Now a few examples:
I like the style of many of Elegant Angel 's more recent movies (after the squirting revolution, that is). Unfortunately that style doesn't show in all their new releases. The best example for the style I mean is the Swallow My Squirt series. Of course this series is must-have stuff for me no matter what the cover looks like, but damn do I love these covers!
Digital Sin 's My Plaything series also looks great in my eyes. The Gauge installment (yummy!) is the only one I own but all the other covers I've seen looked recognizable and similar in a positive way.
Another good example is Zero Tolerance 's Blow Me Sandwich series. I've got number 5, and it's especially nice that there's a "softer" and a "harder" version that look quite similar apart from the dicks. That means with one movie you can first brag to your buddies what a pervert you are, then flip the cover around so grandma's next visit won't end with a heart-attack again, and in the morning you still know which movie you've got in your hands.
The box cover of Anabolic 's Balls Deep 9 drives me crazy. Too bad I'm not that much of an anal fiend but if I was I'd check it out.
And here's my most recent favourite: Madness Pictures ' 12 Nasty Girls Masturbating Vol. 6. Gimme such a sexy Leah Luv pic and you can forget everything I said before if you must. I'm planning to check this series out for quite some time anyway, and now I'm quite sure where to start... Leah, wherever you are, you're fucking sexy!
You can count on me but I will cum at "three".

No need to be afraid about that, Leah. I really like your braces, they fit in your looks very well, but it'd be nonsense to keep them any longer than you need them. You already look too cute for porn to begin with, which is a good thing, and surely I'm not the only sucker for cuties doing and enjoying naughty stuff, be it with or without braces. [:P)]

This is a great topic, unfortunately the cover is so important, being a salesman, I started in 1997 selling Elegant Angel, than was the founder of Red Light District and sold Red Light District product, until I sold out to my Brother in 2004, I can tell you the product at Red Light District was pretty much the same, with a couple exceptions Mike John and Eric Everhard were the two best selling Directors, because they put more into there movies and on top of that they had grat boxcovers and great names of titles, so in a nutshell if the product is about the same the better box cover will out sell the other one.
