I never paid that much attention myself, but I hear more and more discussions about them. For instance, someone was irritated that the star of the movie wasn't on the box, it was another girl who had a much smaller part. Is there any rule of thumb, or industry standard about this?

Technically there isn't really any norm to this. However, from what I know it's like this... :

Vivid always puts their contract girls on the cover regardless of whether or not someone else has the lead role. I have often been in the lead role and I hardly get credit for it. There are plenty of contract girls that don't even want the lead.. but, they get the box cover.

As for Wicked: from what I can tell they put mostly their contract girls on the covers but, they have also used other talent for lead roles and put them on the cover too. I'm not sure if they have a guideline or not. But, I have seen and know of them using different girls for boxes other than their own contract girls.

VCA:... well they also have contract girls.. and usually it's the same thing.. they get the cover. Once again though.. they try to stick to the lead girl of the movie getting the box cover. I'm not sure if they have ever done it differently but, this is what I've been told and what I know so far.

As for Sin City ... they put whoever they want on the cover.. of course their contract girls.. but, when it comes to another movie.. it doesn't matter who has the lead or anything else.. they decide who might be more important to them.. etc.. and that's who goes on the box... I have had leads for them as well.. and never gotten any credit for it.. hardly even on the box either...

It's the same exact thing for some of the other companies.. they don't care who has the lead.. they just put whoever they want on the cover. I can't say for sure about anyone.. but, this is what I know about right now.

Sux that it's the way it's done.. I'd have a lot more covers if it weren't for this way of doing things..oh well...

as far as who decided what... well most of these places have an art department.. but, that doesn't mean that they get the ultimate decision. I just think that there should be more than one person deciding. If you have only one person doing it then you don't get a variety that might meet everyone's ideas about what they like.. instead you get one person's point of view all the time. Not everyone like's stick thin or just blondes or brunettes... we all have different tastes. I think there could be better decision making on this part...

Usually a box cover has a lot to do with who is under contract since the contracts will usually stipulate that in there. As for other companies I am not even sure they know how they decide sometimes you can tell they just chose the "hot" girl of the moment and other times you have no idea what they are thinking. (ie the time VCA altered Stephanie Swift image on a box cover so much you couldn't even tell it was her).

Yeah, that does kinda suck. I think whoever has the lead role, should get the cover. I know Tina mentioned too that she rarely got the boxcover, even though she's excellent work in a lot flicks.

Hi!
Having contract girls might make a difference in how the decisions are made. At Odyssey
we try to have the star of a movie on the cover but it doesn't always work out as planned. A couple of
examples: We shot a feature and the star got angry at the director and refused to return for a box cover
shoot. In another instance, the film shot for the box was destroyed in processing. The star had just left the
country and wasn't scheduled back for two months, too late to reshoot her.

On the gay side of the company we do have one contract performer but I know we've never used him on the
cover unless he was the actual lead.

Looking industry wide it's probably a combination of who's available and who the company thinks will garner the
most sales.

p.s. It has also happened more than once that a lead actor or actress didn't appear on the cover because they looked like complete hell
when it came time to shoot the box.

The graphic in question, which, if Stephanie were to commit a crime and this was the only lead the police had to go on, she'd be able to rest easy in the knowledge that she would never be apprehended.

The companies that release the movies obviously decide who goes on the boxes. Or sometimes the producer/directors in charge of the production if they operate independantly. Besides contract girls whom are often promised a certain number of boxcovers, no one mentioned the next most obvious thing- that the prettiest or most photogenic girls get the main picture on the front of the box, ideally! That or the most "popular" girl at the time, if the company thinks that is important. Like someone else suggested, once in a while odd things happen that change the decisions mid-stream, like the shoot being lame, or someone not showing up, but otherwise I usually go for the prettiest girls that will make the box look appealing. It almost always works out that I also used those girl(s) in the most scenes of the movie as well (the 'leads' if you will) so it is almost always the smartest move anyway.
