Why is it that sometimes when I post on a thread, the thread doesn't get bumped to the top of the list, and I don't show up as the last poster, even though my reply is clearly there? I have even gone back and added a minor edit again to try to bump them to the top, but it doesn't work, and still shows the 2nd to last poster as being the most recent.
Until you refresh your screen, it will usually display what is cached in memory. If you want to see an updated screen, click on the reload icon at the top of your browser.
Right, it doesn't get fixed with a refresh, and I can be chatting with another poster, and it will show the same on their refreshed screen. It only happens occasionally, but is sucks if I have replied to a post on page 3, and it stays on page 3.
There are a few tables that get updated when a user posts. At some points during the day the database server is quite busy. The posting process used to run as a transaction in the past which ensured that all of the tables where updated. I changed that because I didn't like the table locking that occured. So once in a while this will happen.
BTW, which page isn't updating? Is it forum.asp or the main forum?
Forum pages. Like right at this moment (depending on how quickly someone reads this post) I just replied to the Lottery poll in the poll forum. It didn't bump, and it still shows Neitzsche as the last response. However, if you open it, my reply is there.
Sometimes Firefox, sometimes IE. Doesn't matter. Sometimes it happens when I am chatting with another user, and they see the same thing I am seeing. Therefore, it is not an issue on our end.
It's really no big deal. I just wanted to point it out, because as other people have experienced, it really does happen.

OK, this just happened to me posting on the "Girls only: Sex object by proxy? Time to prove it!" on Jul 18 2005 : 10:59:17 AM. I tried the cntrl F5 but that didn't work. It failed to updated in both the polls forum page and the all forums page.
I was viewing it on Firefox 1.0.2 running on Windows XP.
Btw, this has also happened to me running IE on XP.
I just read that post too, GDC, and noticed that your's was the last response, but it hadn't been bumped, and still showed Robbie as the last poster. Obviously refreshing your screen wouldn't help ME to see it correctly.
Drew, would you like a little lube for your databases?
I have Astroglide and Liquid Silk. Although, I'm thinking Slippery Stuff might be best to really loosen up those sticky indexes or maybe Eros for long-lasting, super-slick entity-relationships.

I have a similar problem. Sometimes people talk about new avatars, and I think WTF, I don't see a new avatar? Then I have to wait until the day after, then I see the new avatar, too.

Vince, the cntrl+F5 does work with new avatars. Sometimes you may need to log out of your browser, then use cntrl+F5 again. Worst case scenario, try emptying your browser cookies.
The web server instructs your browser to store a cached copy of all avatars on your local computer for 24 hours. This way your computer doesn't fetch every avatar on every forum thread which saves us tons of bandwidth. You should be able to do Ctrl+F5 to force a reload of all content on a page.
It's really not a big problem. It's probably happened to maybe a dozen posts I've done, with random threads (length of the thread does not seem to make a difference). Except for one case I can think of, someone following me in posting has always bumped the thread. Even in that one case, I think the second response after mine bumped up the thread.
My theory is at the moment I'm posting, I think there may be a maximum number of operations occurring in the database, so the data update isn't made to update the tables for the forum pages. Or possibly another person is posting at the same moment and the database only responds to one update and not both occurring at the same instance.
Not a big deal as the response itself is saved and someone else posting will end up bumping the thread.
No proxy server and I have all the necessary updates. If I view in IE, the same thing occurs. However, as 3SB pointed out, we both see the same thing (even when using cntrl+F5...which btw does work for me with avatars) which suggests it is not on our client side but on the server side.
Btw, Robbie and Cuddly Wombat, next time you see a post about a problem, it's polite to *leave it alone* until staff has a chance to take a look and see what the problem might be...especially if it's something that is difficult to replicate on demand. That was the whole point of why I was very specific about the post so they can examine it and verify it is occurring and try to figure out why.
Edited to add: And in this case, have people trying to view the thread using different browsers, so you can test and figure out if it's the browser or something on the ADT server side.
it's probably how firefox is set up to check for a new version of documents, go take a look in about:config.
fwiw, if you don't mind the occasional reload-from-rightclick, setting it to "once per session" takes a lot of load off of the server and will signifigantly speed up browsing. just use the active topics function when you need to and you might notice a difference,

My guess is Cuddly Wombat must have seen the same thing on whatever browser he's on...otherwise he wouldn't have bothered bumping the thread my post was on, he would have just said it appeared bumped to him.
I consider this problem on par with what type of lube I feel like buying for this weekend.
Which is to say, if I'm bored I might research it and talk about it. (I'm bored right now) But it doesn't really matter, because it all works in the end, anyways.
James, if you were viewing the thread, you would have seen the same thing that GDC and I were seeing. I reiterate for the umpteenth time, it isn't on the client side. ANY ADT users would have seen the same thing.
3SB specifically mentioned me by name in her post at 11:22. Therefore I thought is useful to respond and let her know that I was experiencing no bumping problem at my end. Fair enough?

As an aside, I note that this is a very common problem that I have noticed at ADT over the past few years. I will see that a thread has not received any new posts since my last visit (ie, the thread is not purple and the last recorded post in the thread description is one that I have previously viewed), but when I click on the thread I will find sometimes up to two or three new posts that have not bumped the thread.
