Endless Loop Senior Member Tomatometer 1129 Posts 8/04	Posted - Dec 12 2004 : 4:24AM Having burned zero CD's in the past I'm wonderering If I can copy large HQ .wmv movies to CD, or if they must be burnt to DVD? I've got maybe 20 to 25 somewhat high quality .WMV files, ranging from 250 - 425megs each. Thanks [Link]

Click to expand Thanks James, i wasn't sure what the quality would be on a cd-r, or even it it will suffer any degradation at all. If you could offer a bit of insight, I'm trying to find out, what exactly determines, when a DVD burn is necessary, aside from the additional room they offer for a full length feature of pristine quality. Click to expand James has posted a few links to really good free applications recently and I was merely giving him a compliment. I'm fairly knowledgeable on computers and he's mentioned a bunch of programs I've never heard of. It sounds like you only want to back up your files right? If that's the case you can burn them to any type of disc you want and the only difference is disc capacity. you're copying files to a disc so there is no issue with video quality or compression. The big difference comes if you want the files to be viewable on a DVD player. Then you'll have to be able to make VideoCDs or DVDs. That's when video quality differs. You may run into all kinds of compatibility issues (can the DVD drive read DVD+-R/RW or CD-R/RW, can it read VideoCDs, etc) and it can get complicated. I use Roxio for my DVD and CD burning needs. I'm used to it, it has enough advanced features and have found it works for me. only problem is it's not free. (I haven't used many of the DVD features yet) I've saw Sony's CD burning software a few versions back and it looked like it was designed for kids. A lot of people use Nero but I've never had the opportunity. [Link]

I've got a couple more weeks on my subscription to AllInternal.com, and just wanted to save some of the classics for future viewing before closing it. My HDD could hold them, but it'd make for a bohemoth folder, and besides, I think most would agree, porn is far to crucial to compromise, I mean heck, their like family! :) Thanks again bud! jamesn Senior Member Cambridge, MA 750 Posts 1/04	Posted - Dec 14 2004 : 5:16AM thanks oatmeal, i hoped someone would get some use out of them. anyhow, dvd is a little less-mature than cd so you might make some discs that don't read well. but it's getting cheaper and holds a lot--it's really a question of getting a drive and where you're going to use it. btw, wmv won't play on a dvd player, even one that supports .avi/divx--you'll have to transcode and lose a little quality. I'm not sure how Roxio converts the video files (avi, mov, mpg or wmv) to DVD viewable content or if there are particular file types it can't handle. I couldn't find that on Roxio's web site in the few minutes I looked. Roxio's video tutorial 'how to make a DVD Menu' shows dragging an mpg video. If it works with wmv files then you have a few options if you need to turn it into a two step process using Windows Movie Maker I'm not a veteran of pay sites and am not sure if they have implemented licensing. If they do copying wmv files to disc (as files not as DVD content) may not work. Meaning if you're not a member any more the files won't work. [Link]

It reminds me of "Audacity's" workaround for obtaining MP3 licensing. I'm thinking at this point, on just getting a burner that has all the software included, to expedite this task of putting all to DVD. Damn, not to sound naive, but I didnt even imagine the possibility of being able to lock wmv's once copied to your HDD? My membership is still active for a couple weeks, and have yet to send in my notice to cancel, quite sure I'd still have access to files throughout the end of my billing period. But as jamesboston so accurately noted, I'll need to do some formatting to each, I presume de-compressing the wmv,s to an mpeg-2 format, before opening with roxio, Nero, or Burnatonce so, guess i'll need a file converter. I currently have one called Video perspective by River Past that does some nifty changes. But, as for formats, it lists one export as a DV (digital video) and not sure if thats anything acceptable for a DVD writer. Damn, off to work.. That media creator looks very similiar to Movie Maker 2, which has worked ok for me in the past. These files I'm intending to save, are complete scenes of about 20 mins each avg. Some outstanding. It's a three step process: 1) Design the DVD project (front end, links to video, etc). It's all visual and fairly easy. There's even a preview section so you can see how it works 2) Instead of burning the DVD project directly to a DVD I sent it to an ISO file (CD or DVD disk image). I don't know why I had to do this other than there was a lot of work to do. I had an animated DVD menu as well as animated chapter previews. 3) Used CD Copier (in the bundle) to burn the ISO image on my hard drive to a DVD. It worked fine. Kinda cool actually. I don't know how Digital Rights Management works if you are backing up your files to a CD or DVD. The way I did it translates the files to a different format and avoids any future hassles. [Link]

I suggest Roxio only because it covers the bases from the newbie up to some advanced stuff. It's on sale at a few stores, they must have a new version coming out. [Link]

Considering I've never went the "cheap" route on my machine before, and having never regretted it, put the Burner back on the dwindling stack of 6, picked up a pack of blank dics, and came home to order the NEC. Dont think it comes with any software, but like you said, I probably would of returned for better stuff anyways, and prolly best I approach that "three step process", with intuitive, well written software. It might arrive 2nd day by Friday, otherwise Monday, when hopefully i'll have these files prepped for burn! Wonder if I can create that image with Alcohol 120%? [Link]

Click to expand We're getting very close to the line here. If you want to talk about burning software, like Nero, that's fine. If you want to talk about software that will decrypt or compress files in order to be able to burn discs, you're probably on the other side of the line. Legal vs. illegal is not the issue. We tend to be very conservative when it comes to this topic. Even if the software is not specifically designed for the copying of copyrighted material, if part of their design allows that to happen, then this topic either needs to go to e-mail or to another forum where this topic may be more appropriate.
