Will someone explain the significance of Burning Man in the context of contemporary society. It sounds like the stadium parking lot of a Grateful Dead concert, with all the low grade chaos which that entails.

Whether I being thick-headed, or succumbing to old age, I don't understand it. Even after reading their website I don't get it.

It's not a rave, I didn't see music being promoted, its open to young kids so it's not a sex or drugs orgy.

Is it a big open air convention where everyone trips on X or meth and ponders life of earth?

I worked for a photographer who shot the festival and many of my friends went when I lived in Berkeley. Yes, it's like a dead show parking lot, except the scenery is a lot more interesting - and there's lots more nakedness. I think the original intent was spiritualistic not hedonistic. At some point it just became a big party.

I've been to the area - dramatic landscape - nice hot springs.

Doesn't everything turn into a party though? The only reason I go to NFL games is for the tailgate party, who cares about the browns, the packers or the brown packers.

From the reading on their website it appears you can find whatever fringe experience you're after.
