I was looking forward to this movie, but it got off to a terrible start with me right off the bat when the FBI warning screen proved to be unskippable. Can't bypass it, can't FF it, just have to sit and watch. And it's over a minute long for shit's sake.

Even with the five minutes of ads on Vivid discs, you can FF through them, which at least gives you some sense of progress. Just sitting and looking helplessly at an unchanging, unalterable screen drives me up the fucking wall. Any longer and they could use this technique at Guantanamo.

Most recent Red Light discs let you click right to the menu, as they should. I know I'm probably overreacting to one minute out of my life, but what the fuck? Why not let me spend that minute checking out Brianna Love instead? Is there a reason?

Hmm, I'm not buying it, anal aficionado. CD's don't require us to listen to a lecture on copyright before we can get to the music, so why should DVD's do the equivalent?

I was thinking the same thing when i was watching some of Erik Everhards latest movies. In fact i think it was even longer on these, something like 1.20. If you don´t wanna watch it you can always press stop and select another title on the disc (at least i can on my player).

Can you think of a better reason. The reason i said that is because i have noticed that all of RLD's new releases contain a small red disc located on the back cover with the phrase if it ain't red it ain't red light surrounding it.look for yourself

Oh, I've seen the ads, and you may be right about why they are doing it. My previous was more in line of pointing out the illogic in requiring people to view the notice. It isn't going to affect the pirates and it has no legal significance in terms of enforcing the copyright.

You aren't able to FF through FBI warnings on the majority of MAINSTREAM releases, so I don't really think this is a vaild complaint.

A Bustful of Dollars is worth the wait to get through the beginning schmeal. Personally, I wasn't thrilled with a certain lecherous real-life "fake agent" who appeared (and starred in!) an early scene portraying (you guessed it) a lecherous agent. No names are needed - but his first name is phoenetically the same as a recently-deceased past president...

I'd say that the FBI screen is required viewing for about 65% of the titles out there. Any DVD Author that's worth his salt makes that required reading. Sure, it's a bitch, but it's always been that way for mainstream DVD's.

To me, when it's non passable, that tells me that they are dealing with a top shelf Author and I should expect more from the overall DVD experience.

To take an argument to the extreme -- back of the bus was the way of the world in about 65% of American cities... doesn't make it right, or that we have to like it.

I hate being forced to do anything.

I've been watching videos/dvds for well on 25 years now, I get the fucking idea. Copying is bad.

Guess what, they're stupid little message only makes me mod my DVD player to allow me to access the content I want, when I want -- not after some arbitary time -- or it forces me to do some reauthoring.

It's insulting. Almost as bad as commercials in movie theatres ("So, Jeff... why did you stop going to the movies?") or trailers in front of the Disney films my kids devour (My 2 year old's budding volcabularly was littered with "Chicken Little! Chicken Little" references.. and then the movie scared the bejeesus out of her...).

All ways of saying "bend to my will."

Could there be another industry that holds their fans in such contempt? Perhaps the music industry, but only by a smidge.

From today's NY Times Op/Ed by Damian Kulash, the "the lead singer for OK Go." (never heard of them.)

"... No matter how sophisticated the [copy-protection] software, it takes only one person to break it, once, and the music is free to roam and multiply on the peer-to-peer file-trading networks.

Meanwhile, music lovers get pushed away. Tech-savvy fans won't go to the trouble of buying a strings-attached record when they can get a better version free. Less Net-knowledgeable fans (those who don't know the simple tricks to get around the copy-protection software or don't use peer-to-peer networks) are punished by discs that often won't load onto their MP3 players (the copy-protection programs are incompatible with Apple's iPods, for example) and sometimes won't even play in their computers.

Conscientious fans, who buy music legally because it's the right thing to do, just get insulted. They've made the choice not to steal their music, and the labels thank them by giving them an inferior product hampered by software that's at best a nuisance, and at worst a security threat.

As for musicians, we are left to wonder how many more people could be listening to our music if it weren't such a hassle, and how many more iPods might have our albums on them if our labels hadn't sabotaged our releases with cumbersome software. "

Back to the topic

Why is the message 80seconds?

could a brief message appear for 5 seconds and then the rest at the end of the movie?

Most porn DVDs aren't even encrypted so why put the stupid warning message if you can simply drag and drop all the material for the world to have?

Customers ie paying customers don't like it so fix it or lose the customers.

Use Arcoss to slow down the copying of discs.

Sorry -- didn't mean to tangent you there.
Because it CAN be.

Or, perhaps there's a more mundane answer -- "the guy in authoring fucked up."

Sure, but you'd hit stop long before then, wouldn't you? You'd never see it, and you'd never learn that copying is BAD. Without learning that, you as revenue stream would dry
up because without that knowledge, you'd take hours of your life away to make sure you didn't have to spend a whopping $14 on that copy of Young Ripe Mellons you've been whacking off to.

(And why do producers care? Once they unload it to retailers, its the retailer's problem, isn't it?)

Ah, the irony of it all! Just makes it more frustrating, doesn't it?
Ergo, my earlier rant.
And spend money? Why bother? It's only porn.

Besdies, you just drive people to this (from a thread about Arcoss encoded discs at some forum Google turned up...)

"Hi there, I had the same problem, so I went ahead and clone the whole movie with EvilProgram 3.0.2.5 from whopp-de-doo.xxx in to an ISO image, now that software removes copy protection and that kind of stuff, so mounted the Iso image in EvilVirutalDrive 5.1.1.1 and used EvilProgram to remove aditional features, languajes and that kind of crap, burned it to dvd and now I have a region free, crap free dvd, and my original one is safely putted away in my collection box."

But I guess this is OK, since s/he bought the original copy -- and stripped away all the bullshit that destorys the DVD experience for him/her.

Or is it?

Yeah, I kinda doubt that anyone is gonna spend, say, $15 on a DVD and, just because the beginning credits or intros are lengthy, give up on it without waiting it out and viewing it. That idea is utterly absurd. Of course you will, albeit grudgingly, wait it out to see the content. Unless, of course, if that wait is sufficient time to cause you to (ahem!) lose your "interest" (heh heh)...

I don't think that's true. It seems to me that I can either FF, skip past or menu through on everything except Paramount releases. And even with those, it's about 15 seconds.

No, I'm not going to give up on a movie over this, but the question is still, why is 1:06 better than :15? You're just punishing a guy who did buy the disc and isn't copying anything -- not just once, but every time he puts the damn thing in.

See, if there was something the studio gained from this I would understand it, even if I didn't like it. I'm just not seeing the upside to keeping the consumer away from your product, even if it's just for a minute.

I agree, the warnings being that long is stupid. I only watch these movies to get off, and when you make me wait to do that, I'm not a happy customer. This kind of reminds me of those CD's with DRM that don't allow you to copy your music, even though you just bought it, onto your computer.

I've never been a fan of in your face copyright warnings. Though I don't condone piracy, I certainly am not in favor of these longer than neccessary FBI screens. I concur that they do nothing to deter those who want to copy the stuff anyway. And it's understandable that some people don't mind the wait and what not, we all have different ways of doing things, but the real losers are people like ObiBong and myself who pay for our movies legitimately and have every right to get to the good stuff right away.

Call me impatient, but I don't think it's unreasonable to want to see Brianna Love getting fucked right away instead of staring at an FBI warning screen.

maybe it's that long to force the disc size over 4.7 GB? Or perhaps it's to alienate customers and ruin their name.

If you think 80 seconds is bad you should see some of the mainstream DVDs released in europe. Many distributors have the same discs released all over europe and have subtitles and/or dubbing for all the different countries. Some genius came up with the idea to put the "copying is bad" notice in every language before the movie. Sometimes these things run for over 5 minutes, usually you can skip past them but sometimes you can´t.

ObiBong has made the perfect suggestion: Get a pornstar to read out the copyright notice.

Seriously, NONE of us would be whinging if we had Brianna Love in a bikini telling us that copyright is bad. Heck, we'd probably sit there and learn the lines with her so that everytime we watch the movie we could lip-sync with Brianna. We could get a different star to do it each disc - and then there'd be some of us buying a disc purely because we're completists and we really wanted to see Lauren Phoenix read out the copyright notice on TEENS NEED CHOCOLATE CUM #7.

90 seconds of pre-movie material well-spent, eh?

Wait, I can see it now. The latest compilation from Private:

COPYRIGHT WHORES

A collection of thirty-three 'verbal copyright tease sequences' featuring some of Private's hottest stars explaining why you should not be involved in porn film piracy. Unless that means buying the 'Pirate Fetish machine' series. That sort of Piracy is good.'

Do they still use watermarks, now that they have the red discs and the "enhanced" copyright warning?

I'll accept the "enhanced" copyright warning because it won't detract from my enjoyment of the DVD, although it will momentarily delay my gratification.

I haven't bought or rented any DVDs that I know have watermarks because watermarks significantly hinder my enjoyment.

Obviously, if other people were as irritated by watermarks as I am, companies would not be using them. If I could put up with them, I would. Unfortunately, I have tried and failed. They are deal breaker as far as I am concerned.

However, the "enhanced" copyright warnings are not a deal breaker for me.

Of course they do. Although not all of the time. For titles that are owned by individual directors and RLD is the distributor, it is up to the director whether there is a watermark or not. If it is an RLD owned title, it will always have a watermark.

When a company cares so little about the consumer that they put grafitti on thier movies, why should anyone be surprised that they will make you sit through a 1:06 FBI warning with a disabled remote?

I am against the mandatory, non-ffwdable viewing of the FBI warning and have informed the higher-ups at RLD. I was told that they are just complying with advice from the company's legal counsel.

Would you happen to know what that legal counsel recommends as a minimum length of time to show the warning?

To all studios:
If there is some truth in the idea that not forcing the viewer to watch the FBI warning may compromise future litigation against bootleggers, fair enough, show the warning for 2-3 seconds.
But do we have to watch animated logos and other pointless annoyances (we know who you are, we bought one of your titles for fecks sake) before getting to the main menu?

I have seen many mainstream DVDs released in europe, and those non-ffwdable "copying is bad" warnings with multiple languages that i have seen are After the movie. maybe this is player issue, my player is Sony.
I don't know how long those are because i turn my player off.

Huh - you WANT Macrovision? Amazing...

When you mention forced viewing...what the hell would you call the phone sex ads that appeared at the beginning of videos? Every company did it differently back then so there was no set time duration. The same holds true with DVD pre-show material - for the most part companies do it differently. Compare, for example, Legend, RLD, and Digital Playground - which do you REALLY think is most annoying?

Ah, you could always FF thru the VHS phone sex ads, DB. Nowadays they can prevent you from FFing thru them, and to that I say NO THANKS.

I'm happy I have a software DVD player on the computer that will allow me to bypass all that crap and just jump to where I want to go.

The beginning of the new DMJ movie has forced shit, and it drives me nuts. Disney does it too, so its not a porn phenomena. It's marketers taking advantage of a captive audience. It is insulting to me as a viewer and a consumer.

I don't want to have to put on a DVD of any type, porn or otherwise, and then change the channel to something else so I can skip the commericals... and hope I make it back to the menu...

Sorry, but I don't know the reasoning behind the length of the onscreen warning. It seems to me that it punishes paying customers each and every time they play a DVD while doing little to combat piracy.

Ding ding ding. We have a winner.

Right now, the company that is most aggressively persuing pirates is Evil Angel. They do absolutely nothing on their DVD's that disable the remote to force the viewer to watch anything that they don't want to.

Luckily Private allow you to skip right to the menu on all their releases. Titles with enforced-viewing-anything piss me off to no end, remember when Hustler's releases had a non-skippable ad for penis pills? Same shit as far as I'm concerned.

Here in Australia, many of our "region 4" releases are the same as the European R2s, (they're R2/4) and so we get the same multilanguage warnings, but they're after the feature, not before.

And yes, Brandon hits the nail right on the head there.

I don't WANT anything. I don't copy DVDs so it's irrelevant whether or not Macrovision is part of the makeup. Unless it forces you to wait one minute before the menu shows up.

I was just coming on here to complain about this. 1:06 sounds about right. It's been between 1:02 and 1:06. It sucks because Red Light/PXP are my favorite studios. I've never once read the warning. I just switch the tv imput and watch TV for a minute or so but it does get me "out of the mood"

I love your movies but to me you're telling me that you don't give a damn about my movie watching experience.

Unfortunately, "Ten Little Piggies 7" seems to have this problem as well. That damn FBI screen is really a bad way to go. It does absolutely nothing but annoy the watcher and at a cost that could possibly start to turn people away from these movies.

Let's hope that things take a turn for the better, and soon , because Brandon and the rest of the guys at PXP and RLD really are putting out the best stuff out there in my opinion. There is no need to attach such a detrimental aspect to what is a great product otherwise.

Two out of fifty titles I own are like this. The two that do something like this suck because of it. Not only is the FBI warning required viewing, but also the phone and video ads... How shitty is that! It takes like 3 mintues to load the damn disk. I think it sucks that you cannot fastfoward thru a DVD like a VHS tape in regards to the FBI warning. I buy my DVDs, so lecturing me about copywright infringment is pointless... unless you want to piss me off so bad w/ wasting my time/money that you would rather see me intentionally target bootleg porn.

100% of my mainstream movies do no require this.

Great thread, I am glad I know how redlight values their customers time ahead of me wasting my money with them. There is so much good porn out there that I can afford to not have my time wasted.

Cabdvd.com/Panochas Calientes is the company whose long ass forced intro sucks a dick. What sucks even more is if the movie ends, it goes right back to the forced watching again... and you cannot skip it even this time.
