In my limited experience, which still includes a vast and diverse exposure to everyone from A-List guys and gals to the whores who walk in off the street looking to hustle up a few bucks to get their phones turned back on, I have only had two experiences that concerned STD's. Both experiences were with chlamydia, the "common-cold" of STD's. In fact, some statistics say that one in three sexually active people have some strain of chlamydia and don't know it, as it is often a symptomless affliction, especially in women. Three days worth of pills and you're clean again...But I have not experienced any problems with herpes, syphillis, AIDS...nothing like that at all. To the contrary, throughout the course of my personal sex life, long before I got into porn, I met women who cumulatively had almost every sexual affliction known to man, sans AIDS.

Our business is actually quite clean. If I were a bettin' man (which I am), I would venture to say that if you added up the number of porn scenes being shot over the course of one month, and compared it to the number of tricks being turned on the streets in one month, the ratio of sex to sickness would determine that it's safer to go into porn than into prostitution. Right now, we are kept relatively clean by a type of honor system...Talent expects that everyone will keep up on their monthly STD tests, and if you don't bring your paperwork to the shoot, you're probably not going to be working that day.

If I were Dr. Koop, I'd take more of an active role in finding a way to provide affordable healthcare for the industry, rather than abominating a disease problem that is really not that bad. But that is also a problem of nationwide magnitude that, sadly, I expect no progress on anytime soon. It's obvious that the powers that could provide said healthcare must have decent healthcare provided for them, because they are in no big rush to get it figured out.
