I read about this last night. As far as being gay he isn't the first tenured professor to be a homosexual. The university that I last worked at had two lesbian professors on staff, both were tenured. We didn't have any gays that I remember (this university only had about 20K students so we only had about 500 professors -- so the odds are we would not have many homosexuals teaching) but I still doubt this guy is the first. I just hope that he can get his bipolar (formerly called manic depression) under control and get back to teaching somewhere even if it isn't in Pasadena. I actually think a class discussing porn is a good idea as an elective if it is comprehensive enough in its history of porn discussion and having a porn performer discuss issues in front of his students is a great idea. I also think the course would have been better received at a university like UCal Berkley rather than a more conservative city like Pasadena.
^ There are tons of porn studies classes across the country, and the world. Including Berkeley. Oh and fact that you question the presence of tenured professors who are gay is...bewildering. Edited by - Gore Gore Girl on 8/12/2013 7:15:06 PM

No shit? You mean to tell me that homosexuals are normal people with normal jobs too?! And doesn't this......contradict this? How incredibly perceptive and insightful. I mean, really...
Professor Hugo Schwyzer is bisexual, not homosexual. I would have thought that even you would have managed to pick up on that if you had really read about this. Here. This is an article by him:Mythbusting Bisexual Men
I apologize for the misleading response. I was typing under the assumption that gays are male homosexuals and lesbians are female homosexuals. I meant to say that we did not have any male homosexuals on tenure. However we did have two female homosexuals on tenure. Lesson learned. I guess I have spent too much time in San Francisco or something. Now may I go get my dick sucked by Maitresse Madeline?

^ I'd have to bet that 10-to-15 percent of your professors are either gay or bi-sexual -- just like the rest of society. People who survive in academia are very good at playing the "games" the system requires. So, I'm not surprised that they're good at keeping their sexual preferences off your radar screen. Ironic, too, as I suspect the vast majority of college students and faculty could care less. Don't ask; Don't care. BUT -- the big but -- is when some disgruntled parent, or student who fails a class, or colleague advancing their own career, decides to make an issue of it, I'm sure the school will toss them (or attempt to toss them) under the bus faster than you can say former-porn-star.
^ Good point, Goldstein. However the last university I worked at was highly conservative (especially for being in a state university system) so I suspect the number isn't ten per cent. Now that I think about it, I don't doubt that there were a few professors in the closet especially considering the management (Deans, President, Provosts) and Board of Control members were mainly staunch Christian Republicans appointed by or hired by those appointed by the Republican majority in our state Legislature. I can safely say that there was an openly anti-homosexual (and anti-liberal) bias present -- unlike many universities nowadays.
