People in this country think they're ethically impeachable and half the time those are the same people who cheat on their spouses, embezzle money, and many other horrible things. Sure and that is the line they're going to fall back on, but make no mistake this has much more to do with the fact that America is deeply sexually repressed and is run by religious zealots. Also, I find it extremely odd how sexualized our public media is, but how repressed we act when something like this happens. So yes, in most American locales, prostitution is illegal. Well there is the hypocrisy thing. David Vitter went to a hooker, but, being from Louisiana hell, that's almost a requirement of the job. Spitzer was not merely governor he was a PROSECUTOR who had brought down prostitution rings in NYC, along with lotsa other industries. He's definitely held to a higher standard.

I'm a little peev'd at GGW. Well, the story (for now, at least) seems to be that she might have tricked GGW about her age. Do the math: it's now 2008, and Dupre is 22; the tapes were from 2003, five years ago. Improper record-keeping under 18 U.S.C. 2257 and releasing tapes with models under 18 is one of the biggest things that got Joe Francis and his company into trouble with the Feds before, and it's pretty clear he doesn't want to tempt fate, as noted by the various news reports.
It would depend on when her birthday is. If she hasn't yet had a birthday this year, then she could very easily have been 18 when that footage was shot.
Because doing porn will tarnish her reputation? If the music industry people are OK with her being a world-famous prostitute, I don't think a porn performance would hurt her music career.

The girls are usually charged with a misdemeanor offense. The "johns", if charged at all (which is pretty much the case, everywhere in the US) might also be charged with a misdemeanor offense. It is the pimps and operators of the brothels that usually get hammered.
