What is the best type of camcorder? (Sony,Canon, etc.) Not the $1000 plus models, but somewhere in the $400-$800 dollar range. Which has good features and the best picture quality?

Thanks

p.s. I also read somewhere that the ones that go directly to dvd can be used as an external dvd burner also. If so which models have that feature? Thanks again

I am not an expert, but will share my opinion.

First off, you need to clarify what you will be using the camera for, although I have a pretty good idea. Some cameras are better for indoors, while others are better for outdoors.

Second, the ones that burn to DVD are not up to snuff compared to MiniDV.

Finally, I use a Sony VX-2100 which is not in your budget. It may be worth your while to get one pre-owned if you know the owner and can get a good price.

Outside of that make certain it has three CCD chips. Again that may kill your budget but I like quality. Also, spend some extra money on quality lighting if you plan to shoot indoors.

Peace out...

I agree with McX, if you are at all concerned with quality try to get one with 3 CCDs. You might be able to find one of the Panasonic models for a bit over $1000. Sony cams (3 CCD) are all great. As far as the "direct to DVD" cameras they are aimed at the consumer market and haven't really taken off, I don't think those can be used as an external DVD burner either (external burners are getting really inexpensive anyway)...hope the info helps!

Panasonic has a new 3ccd camera that retails for about $700.00.

Panasonic PV-GS120

Not sure of the quality, but I believe it is the lowest price 3ccd camera on the market. Amazing, ain't it?
