There is NOTHING more annoying and irritating than a sloppy amateurish and just plain FUCKED UP camera work on a hot sex scene.
Yet this happens more often than not. The reason for this is that most porn camera ops didn't go to film or video school, didn't pick up a book on how to shoot and really didn't bother with learning how to shoot for COVERAGE.
Most just imitate what they see on MTV and think they're being cutting edge or cool when in actuality they being a pain in the ass for the viewer.
Seeing quick cuts, fast/slo motion and acute angles in a video may look cool of your shooting a Kayne west video but in porn its fucking ANNOYING...i'll say it again..IT'S FUCKING ANNOYING!!!
As viewers and more directly VOYEURS of sex... all we want to see is good lighting for a clear scene, good sound and simple camera work.
But for some reason what we get is half assed lighting, so so sound and camera work that looks like Fellini on crack. But lets get to the point...
1. STOP MOVING THE CAMERA EVERY 30 SECONDS!! If your shooting a hot sex scene and there's good chemistry between the talent and the woman is REALLY starting to get into it (or is at least ACTING like she is) just let the action happen in front of the camera.
I know you FEEL like there should be some kind of motion or movement to add some energy to the scene but thats NOT necessary. All the energy you need is happening IN FRONT of the camera so your moving doesn't add anything to it.
Keep the movement to a minimum. If you feel you need to change angle then do it SLOWLY..not herky jerky.
2. ACUTE OR OBSCURE ANGLES ARE POINTLESS. Why cant (tilt) the shot 90 degrees? Its may SEEM like a cool photographers move but its ridiculous for video. And completely useless to a scene. All it does is make the viewer have to tilt their heads to see what the hell is happening. Artsy-fartsy shit belongs in art house movies NOT porn. STOP IT.
3. NOTE TO EDITORS..STOP CUTTING OUT THE FEMALE ORGASM. I've seen TOO many vids where the woman was getting ready to cum and suddenly the scene cuts or fades to something else..this is plain wrong and idiocy to boot. Especially in a gonzo vid where all kinds of extraneous bullshit is added or allowed (intro, outros, interviews, BTS, director shouting orders during the scene) yet the woman cumming and asking for a break to get her shit together is "not necessary" to see??? That is more fascinating to watch than asking her mundane questions about her sexual preference any day of the week and twice on sunday!
4. HOW TO SHOOT THE MONEY SHOT...(her's not his) When your shooting a scene and the guy is fucking the hell out of the girl..every now and again she may actually get into it. Look for the signs leading up to the female orgasm:
A. she may close her eyes or stare off into space...this means he's hitting her spot and she's starting to concentrate on how good it feels.
B. She may either STOP making noise or start making a low repetitious sound..along with the closed eyes or fixed stare means the quiet before the storm...watch out.
C. Her toes may start to curl or she may start to hold on to something.
D. She may start to diddle her clit herself to make sure it happens.
Thats just a general overview and of course every woman is different but you can spot certain signs of you care to pay attention. Now back to the scene..
The scene is smokin' and she's really getting into it. You as a cameraman have a decent WIDE SHOT where you see all of her body and whats happening..then suddenly she moans really loud or yells she's coming and what do YOU do as a cameraman??
You start moving the camera and zooming in or moving in and zipping the shot up and down her body just as the orgasm hits...WRONG!!! If and when she's cumming is NOT the time to start moving the camera looking for "better angles". I know this is counter-intuitive for you Michael Bay wannabees but when a woman is coming in a sex scene you don't zoom in...you ZOOM OUT!
PULL THE CAMERA BACK...OPEN UP THE SHOT. Lets see her WHOLE BODY. But why? you may ask. Because seeing the whole body writhe in orgasm is much more EROTIC and DRAMATIC and conveys MORE ENERGY to a scene than you think.
Zooming in on her face may SEEM like a good idea but facial expressions can be faked. Also an orgasm doesn't just happen on a womans face.
Zooming in on her pussy is really not a good idea either because unless she's creaming or clenching like crazy you really don't see anything you haven't seen before.
Showing just part of her body, like shaking legs, doesn't work as well either..its like taking a still picture where you cut off the persons legs or head. When a person has an orgasm its usually a WHOLE BODY experience...especially on a woman. If she's making an orgasm face then chances are her stomach muscles are quivering, if thats happening then her legs are shaking if thats happening then her toes are curling. And all this is happening in the span of a few seconds before she regains her composure back. What you want to do in those few seconds is capture lightning in a bottle. Pulling back on the shot does just that. It allows the viewer to CHOOSE what they want to see be it her face, stomach, legs, pussy or toes at the crucial moments. Its LESS work for you with the MAXIMUM pay off for the viewer...and that is what we call a win/win situation.
Good camera work should be like a good plumber..if he or she has done her work correctly then you shouldn't notice a thing. I'm noticing a LOT and I'm not the only one.
So to recap:
STOP MOVING THE CAMERA SO MUCH
STOP THE TILTED ANGLES
SHOOT SCENES IN WIDE ANGLES
WHEN/IF SHE HAS AN ORGASM..PULL BACK ON THE SHOT.

All of this may seem perfect but for everyone who agrees with every word of it, there are people who disagree.
I don't think the people who make porn are stupid. I think they just gave up trying to please everybody and now they're just doing what they want or whatever is easier.

Get a camera and shoot some porn scenes yourself. Some of the best porn I've ever seen was shot by me. Just using a Sony 8mm and three simple light stands. Nothing fancy. Just good basics and some genuine care in the outcome.

Porn orgasms occur about every 6 years. Camera guys will find this post amusing.

In American mainstream porn, yes. In Viv Thomas' movies for example there is at least one real orgasm in every scene and it is captured beautifully.

that's the problem...I know that they are rare, but some girls are better at "performing" then others and a lot of the "guys" shooting are clueless about what is erotic an sensual. They often seem to forget it is not about the guy or them...it's about the girl.

They may not be stupid, but they certainly are not aroused. It explains why the camera is cutting away when some hot action is going on ,the camera guy didn't notice it, it didn't mean anything to him. He at work, just another shoot.
This is a great post and goes to the heart of the matter. The fan would be better served if the director took notice of these "tells" and directed the camera to capture them. Rather being overly concerned about genital visibility.

Nice post...although I'm sure there will be some viewers who disagree as different people find different things "hot."
For example, I had a subscription to the site beautifulagony.com. The premise is that it's 100% amateur video of people orgasming...and it's face shots only. No nudity/hardcore/explicit anything. Just their faces and the sound of the orgasm. Now putting aside all the O-faces from dudes there were some INCREDIBLY sexy women sharing either real or very-realistic fake orgasms on that site. I found many of those performances to be the most erotic thing I have ever seen/heard in any "porn" production. Most full-on hardcore porn looks like a circus act by comparison to me. But I seriously doubt most porn is about glorifying the female orgasm in the first place. That's why the "money shot" is defined as a guy whacking himself to orgasm....that's the "money" in porn, or at least it seems.

Great Post!
I have one thing to add - Cameramen/Directors please SHUT THE FUCK UP! Nothing kills a scene for me more than the heavy nasal voice from behind the camera asking stupid questions or just making general comments to the girl while she is getting fucked. These should be left for the male performer. If you want to ask, then come out from behind the camera and you do the fucking.

The point ultimately isn't what a cameraman or director thinks is "hot" but whether they have a clue about basic cinematography. It doesn't matter if the film is about polar bears in the arctic, the Battle of Gettyburg, or a chick taking 2 dicks in her ass, the camerawork needs to be seamless. In other words, we the viewers should be thinking "damn that's a hot fuck" instead of "why the fuck is the camera angled that way."

even if she's just acting and its believeable then its still no reason to cut it out or fuck up the shoot..

I don't think female orgasms are rare in porn..I think most people are just so jaded and inattentive that they don't care to notice anymore. There's a least one thread on this forum that discusses which female performers come and how often..is anyone going to say that chloe nichole or gen padova are faking all the time?
BINGO!!! give that man a cupie doll..
But I would add that basic cinematography goes hand in hand with knowing the subject your shooting... To use your bear example a wildlife cameraman UNDERSTANDS the habits and such of the animal he's shooting and has a game plan of what he wants to capture...TOURIST on the other hand just press record and play with the buttons thinking their getting "exciting shots"..
Its the difference between amateurs and professional and for a lot of these porn guys their just amateurs who figured out a way to get PAID like professionals...
these guys aren't filmmakers or videographers their just bumble-fucks with an expensive piece of equipment.

I've seen beautiful agony...great stuff...theres also a sister site called IFeelMyself.com that is the absolute BEST at capturing the female orgasm..in fact they shoot it the way all vids should be shot..2 or 3 cameras on sticks (tripods for the uninitiated..lol) and they dissolve between camera angles all the while letting the action happen in front of the camera.
IMO theres some serious homosexual undertones and misogynistic overtones in straight porn just by what they shoot and how they shoot it.

There are a lot of gay and bisexual people in the world. So I think it just makes sense that you might see some "homosexual undertones" in anything that involves sex and a lot of people.
Misogyny? Not even going there.

Watch a soft film from Tinto Brass and you'll see women shot by a man who loves women, the camera goes where his eyes go, taking you on a tour of the beauty he's appreciating. There's no frustration for the viewer because you get to see what you naturally want to see.
Comstock and his wife catch some nice moves and orgasms on screen. They do tell the stories of having "a game plan" about how and what gets covered and knowing how a couple might expect to behave whilst having sex. Two cameras works well too.
Bryan Xin seems to have a knack of letting couples play and moving around them in such a way that the viewer gets the feeling that they are almost unaware of the camera.
Perhaps if you're going to shoot people having sex and want to be a good camera person you need to be a good lover as well as technically adept?
Both Beautiful Agony and I Feel Myself represent something very different from the gonzo fare that's come to typify porn. Both sites are made by intelligent people who actually like people!

it seems to me that they're actually applying a production formula thats better suited for mainstream production than porn.
Qoutas on the kind of shots needed (medium, wide, close up)...
minimums on how much action should be shot...
minimums on how much material needed for DVD extras..etc
these are things that you check off if you were shooting say..a straight to DVD action movie or thriller or even drama.. NOT gonzo style or reality style (which is what my comments mainly pertain to) porn..
this was a Reviewers comments I came across yesterday:
https://www.adultdvdtalk.com/reviews/...ack-dick-4.htm
As far as Tory Lane going black, mission accomplished. Her imprint was all over this video, but that wasn't enough to overcome the assembly line feel and trite dialogue she was fed by Jim Powers. In fact, if Tory has any illusions about making a mark for herself as a director, she shouldn't allow her company to assign Powers to shoot it. If he's behind the camera, he's the de facto director, and this is just product to him. In the BTS you could sense some tension between them as he fed her lines to repeat to the camera. No big surprise that they weren't very convincing.
on a pure technical aspect...
Gonzo and reality porn is similar to cinema verite style which is naturalistic documentary-like shooting while having set up situations.. but how you shoot for mainstream production and how you shoot for GONZO style porn are two completely different animals...
I'm surprised (tho I shouldn't be) that no one has really figured that out yet..

One of the best exapmles the OP is talking about is in New Trix 4. In the scene with Rebeca Linares, the guy is fingering her furiously and as soon as some squirt begings to shoot out the cameraman quickley zooms to her face, and then when he pulls back, all her juices are all over her thighs! WTF!!
I love Rebeca and squirting. In an extremely rare event that Rebeca squirts, the camera man completely turns away from it. I hope he got fired after that shoot.

Porn is shot as if the the director were intent on capturing a series of still-life's. Apples on a table at 30fps rather than the dynamic interaction of bodies in motion.
Shoot porn the way sports are shot. We can not appreciate the runners skills with the camera focused on his feet only.
Do not stop the action for the actual stills either. It fucks up the flow and the stills look like silly mugging for the camera.
Director, direct the damn camera. Leave the fucking to the experts. By the way every director that makes it a habit to direct blow jobs cut it out, just stop it right now.

I'm not in the industry, but past threads have produced replies such as:
1)Well...it must be OK because it sells.
2)Can't please everybody, so I just shoot the way I like.
3)If you think you can do better, start your own company!

Great thread everyone!
I don't mind the 'shaky cam' so much if it's pointed in the right direction.
I HATE the camera flashes or stopping for stills. This to me, just seems like lazyness.
Shoot your stills before, or set up the positions and shoot for the stills after.
Obviously this doesn't work for the money shots, but most of the porn shooters are shooting
on HD anyway, and the stills coming out of almost any HD camera are suitable for the back
of the box.
I'm shooting on a Sony HD cam, and the stills coming out are 6 mega pixels. Higher resolution
than the digital camera's I shot my box covers with just 3 years ago.
To ruin the presentation of the video in order to have promo stills to promote the video seems
like putting the cart before the horse.

Yes, I produce 'porn'. I do work in low budget films as well, so my site is split. There's a link on the front page
that says something like "For my adult entertainment, click here..."
To be honest, the B-Movie indie's don't ever make any money, but every time one I was in gets released,
I get a big traffic boost. So, I'm sort of cross marketing to an audience that probably wouldn't otherwise see me.

^Wow! Marie, in checking out your clips4sale site, I came across this:
Of note, Marie Madison and Kami Andrews were romantically linked in real life during the shooting of this movie, and it shows.
You dated Kami Andrews! God, she's one of my biggest porn crushes! When was that? (If you don't mind my asking.)

I'm a little hesitant actually to talk too much about it here, as just before Kami left the industry she had some pretty harsh
things to say about me in her passing. But in any case, between the years of 2001 and late 2004, Kami and I worked together pretty closely on a number of projects and in the process formed what I would call more of an emotional bond, than a romantic one. If you're a fan of Kami's you know her approach to sex rarely involved romance and our relationship was passionate, but tumultuous.
The scene killbillvol69 (great name btw) is referencing was our girl / girl strap on scene from "Indiscretions", which was filmed right at the 'peak' of our relationship. And though I don't write the descriptions, I don't disagree with that one.

Thanks for saying that. I've sort of given up on any attempt to conform to the 'mainstream' of this industry and so
by default I've been more or less left to my own devices. While I've excepted the fact that I'll never be a 'star' in
this industry, I count myself among the lucky one's who get to do this for a living, and so you won't hear me
complain (much).
Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it.

Probably helps if they don't stray too far away from the woman's face, which unfortunately happens all too often. Would be nice to see full-body or even 3/4 body-shots that last longer than 5-10 seconds too.
Alex you've definitely talked about technical things here that have irked me for years. Best believe I feel your pain.
