hi bazzer01 - during our chat with Tristan Taormino, author of The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women, she was asked this question...

Adult DVD Talk: JoeBob says: On your website you claim anal sex will NOT put a person in Depends, what medical research did you perform to back up this claim?

Tristan: I haven't personally done research first hand, but I have read nearly everything there is to read on the subject and the fact is that WHEN DONE CORRECTLY, anal sex will not damage your body.

What does "correctly" mean? I have a good friend who's aunt has to pretty much wear a diaper for the rest of her life b/c she's had 30 years of anal sex. Everything I've read on it says that in the long run it is not good, but that doesn't mean im right (I've never read medical books or anything so i have no proof). But what is "correctly"? I'm a virgin to anal sex, so i didn't know there were different ways to do it. I thought there was only really one way to go straight up the poop shoot :)

I would have to say it does some damage - and that over time that damage may well accumulate to cause significant problems. I dunno how long it would take, how much damage there would have to be, or how much anal sex you'd have to have to get to that point - but I'm definitely of the opinion that a person could get seriously messed up back there.
Some of the problems I have heard about:

inability to have unassisted bowel movements (always need an enema)
prolapsed bowel
hemorrhoids
thinning of the bowel wall
torn sphincter
rectal incontinence

Considering all that, it's a wonder I like anal sex anyway :)

I think what it means is stretching and training, as opposed to ripping, the anal muscles. Building them up rather than tearing them down.

That requires gradualism, as opposed to the "just shove it in when she get's crazy (or drunk/high) enough" approach.

Fingers, followed by small butt plugs or dildoes, followed by somewhat larger ones, followed by you. With lubrication.

That is, once the motivation is there. There's another thread on that in Sex Talk.

Of course some people (and some women) get into it FOR the brutal approach. Maybe there's usually some element of that in anal, but when it leads to real muscle ripping, it's a problem. I think in this it's like weight lifting, or athletic training. If you do it right, you build your muscles. But if you strain too hard too fast you can do lasting damage.

I'd bet the horror stories DID arise from those who've indulged in a lot of the brutal approach, for masochistic or whatever reasons.

It DOES cause damage in the long run, so don't overdo it.

Well, I just posted a neutral question over on the Gay forum, with a link to here, to try to pull in some experts. <g>

Hmmm... I'm not sure why gay men would be considered experts in this field. Sure, we fuck each other in the ass alot, but we don't really talk about it:

John: So Bob, how's your rectum holding up?
Bob: Ah, man! Ever since I got double fucked last week, I've been having all sorts of bleeding hemmoroids!

Conversations like that just don't happen. So I can only comment on my own experience. I've been fucked (quite a bit) and I don't notice anything bad going on back there. The trick is to learn how to relax all your muscles, so things can slide up there smoothly. If you tense up, then you are more likely to do damage.

I wouldn't think it does cause damage, my girlfriend and I have regular anal sex and she has no problems at all.

It's in the LONG RUN. It's not like your ass will fall apart in, say, 5 years of abuse.

But in the LONG RUN, let's say an average of 40 years of regular butt-fucking (let's say three times a day), you start to lose ass control. In some cases it's not THAT dramatic, but in some cases... let's just say that ALL of your farts will be vewy vewy wet...

I am wondering if anyone who has anal on a regular basis has ever discussed it with their doctor.

I will try to remember next time I go in to ask, "for a friend" of course.

Planet Sex -

Do you have any sources for this authoritative information of yours? Or is it word of mouth?

Are these cases where the individuals engaged in brutal anal ripping activity sometimes, or are you quite sure that they didn't do that?

And so on.

Lunacy: As far as talking with a doctor, I think the average general practioner wouldn't be much help here. He might offer an opinion not a whole lot more informed than we are here, and maybe actually less so. Much better would be someone who tends to see a lot of patients who do a lot of anal sex. Easiest thing I can think of there is a doctor who specializes in gay male patients. (Or aging porn stars. <gg>)

Yep, I know of at least two cases of people who, after years and years of anal sex, lost their ass control.

One is 76 years old, male, cross-dresser.

The other one is a brazilian pornstar, 35 y/o, she did her share of double anal scenes during her 4 years in the biz.

Perhaps the real question -- Planet Sex -- is do we really consider 40 years of 3 times a day anal sex 'normal' behavior (I of course mean normal in the sense of average, not in a judgmental way)?

To those who have made mention of the dangers of more, um, 'sudden' or shall we say 'impulsive' anal sex, does doing this a few times cause problems, in the sense that once the muscles are torn the damage is done? My girlfriend and I engage in semi-regular (no, the figure does not even begin to approach 3 times daily) slow, gentle, dare I say loving anal sex, but on occasion we have gotten caught up in the moment and things have progressed at a pace beyond either of our control. This results in mutually mind blowing orgasms, but unfortunately has also resulted in a small amount of rectal bleeding for her. She remains sore for about a day or so, and then everything seems to return to normal. This has happened maybe 5 or 6 times over the last year. The question-- do you think everything really does 'return to normal', or could the evident muscle tearing still cause problems later on?

Just looking for thoughts and opinions, and wondering if we should be more cautious regardless of the quality of our climaxes.

Thanks,

magnus pym

mag - i don't think you have anything to worry about. impulsive vaginal sex can lead to tears and bleeding too. skin is very elastic until you get much older (the saggy years :)

I love having my guy's cock up my ass, but here are a couple of things that make me nervous:

Cleanliness: I'm not interested in anal, unless I'm totally clean. In order to be totally clean- you need an enema or two, no?
But I've heard that these can weaken you're scphincter muscles to the point you cannot have unassisted bowel movements. ( as mentioined earlier in this thread).
The anal to oral, anal to vaginal issue: I'm not comfortable with either due to the whole bacteria issue, but my boyfriend insists its not that unsanitary for me to take his cock in my mouth or my pussy right after its been in my ass.
Does anyone know anyhthing about this?
I've heard ass to pussy sex can cause infections. Have I been misinformed? Help!

andromeda - yes, ass to pussy can cause urinary tract infections. while urinary tract infections are fairly common, they can also be fatal if not treated with antibiotics. this is why girls are taught at a young age to wipe front to back :)

you don't have to use an enema every time to be totally clean. if you poop and bathe you should be ok to have anal sex with someone you love.

i don't see why an enema would weaken your sphincter muscles.

I'll just add my 2 cents.

It come down to 2 things:

1. Good preparation. (start slowly with small objects)

2. Strengthening the muscles back there.

The rough approach is what leads to problems.

I also believe its depends on your body. If you're weak there is more chance of future problems.

I'm wondering where these people are that engage in anal sex 3 times a day, every single day, for 40 frickin' years.

Shit, I'm not sure I believe that anyone could engage in ANY type of sex (even vanilla masturbation) three times a day, consistently, for 40 years. (And then he goes on to say that one of his examples engaged in quite a bit of double anal.)

Dontcha just love it when people take the most extreme cases and use it as an example of why something is ALWAYS bad? Sure, if you ram a 2-liter soda bottle up there and don't take it out for six months, you should probably expect problems.

This would be like me getting a mosquito bite on my bicep, and scratching it for 12 hours straight with all the force I could muster. I'd be through the skin, well into the muscle, and halfway to the bone. Then I hop on the Internet and post that it's bad to scratch an itch because it caused me to lose the ability to move my arm.

Fer cryin' out loud, the most healthy substance in the world, water, can kill you if you ingest too much too quickly.

Is common sense no longer "IN"?

Now, this in particular I find interesting.

Shortly before my 30th birthday (I'm 32 now), age started bitchslapping me, and I had to endure the occasional hemorrhoid flare-up from time to time (runs in my family). Not at all pleasant.

In fact, one of the reasons that I put off experimenting in that area as long as I did was because of all of the info I read that listed "anal sex" as one of the causes of hemerrhoids.

I finally got curious enough to give it a go anyway, even with the assumption that the hemorrhoids were going to attack me like never before. Much to my surprise, I've not had a single flare-up since I started playing around back there. (historically speaking, it's safe to say that it should have happened 3 or 4 times by now, even if anal play were completely neutral.)

Then again, my flare-ups were ALWAYS stress induced (you never see stress listed as a potential cause), and my anal play is always focused on getting things very, very relaxed back there.

For me, anal play has actually been an effective treatment for hemorrhoids, not a cause.

I can definitely see where "porno style" anal sex could cause some serious issues, though.

In this transcript, which is my favorite webpage on anal sex so far, Dr. Jack Morin speaks about anal sex being helpful for hemorrhoids.

Lord, I hope they never take down that page.

Dr. Morin wrote a book on anal sex in 1981, sixteen years before the second book on anal sex appeared. A real pioneer!

That link and links to many other threads on anal sex are in the Sex Talk FAQ.

Not only that, but he's the only guy in the medical field that I've been able to find that would even hint at the notion that stress might be a contributing factor.

Now, I'm not a doctor, but I am not exactly dumb. It's not exactly a big mental excersize for me to look at the time's that I've experienced these problems, take note of how much stress I was under at the time, and come to the very scientific conlusion of "Duh!!!".

What does it say about our society that something that everyone else lists as a cause can actually be, if practiced intelligently, the cure?

Anal sex can cause long term damage. It can cause short term damage, too. However, it doesn't have to cause any damage at all.

The pounding that goes on in many videos, gay and straight, is probably not a great idea. And just because a 15-inch long 5-inch diameter dildo is marketed is no reason to think it should be inserted in ones ass. Light bulbs, wine bottles, telephone poles and gerbils are not good ideas, either.

Personally, I'd never insert anything any larger than that which I've seen excreted normally and I'd never insert anything which isn't attached to something solid by which I could retrieve it easily.

Experimentation can be a good thing; but common sense should be its guide. It is unlikely that any normal (if there is such a thing) anal sex involving a human penis or reasonably sized dildo & anal probe substitutes with adequate lubrication and reasonable care would do any harm -- short- or long-term. As has been mentioned above, preparation and technique are key -- both for safety and for enjoyment. Start small and work up to something larger.

To be honest, far too blunt, and WAY too free with the info, I can say that I've excreted things, naturally, that were a whole damn sight bigger than what I'd experiment with for pleasure. This happened after surgery while I was on a prescription for codeine (one of the main side effects is BRUTAL constipation). I had things coming out of me that were the consistency of stainless steel, the size of a softball bat, and I hadn't even been warned to warm up for this.

I'm pretty sure that if a doctor is willing to make me suffer that sort of excrutiating pain in the interest of my health, then anything that I do for pleasure is bound to be within the safety limits.

Yes, that's blunt, alright! However, I did say "normally" -- not "naturally" as an aftermath of surgery and with the aid of drugs (that's "naturally" ??? - you poor thing!) ~ GS

Well, yeah, it was still the same stuff, from the same raw materials, as anything else that had ever come from there. So, yeah, I'd call that "natural". It just happened to have more of a &quotiron" consistency to it than usual, due to the meds.

My point was not to be gross, though, even though I'm perfectly aware that I was. My point was that even the medical community seems to be cool with some brutally painful stretching back there, on an occasional basis. If doctors are OK with that, I don't see much of a reason to be nervous about things that actually feel good.

Oh yeah, if you really want to complete the "you poor thing" thought... Nah, THAT would be over the line.... LOL Let's just say that the cast I was in didn't allow me to sit down.

(and now I've completely lost count of how many lines I've crossed)

I can't see a mention of it on that page, although it may well be via Morin that I learnt this fact, but for over a century one of the prescribed treatments for hemorrhoids has been the use of anal dilators which are nothing more than featureless straight sided dildos! My parents have a facsimile copy of a victorian army and navy stores catalogue and such dilators are advertised inside.

Sir Noel, it's mentioned several times on that page - try a control F word search for 'hemorrhoids' and they will be highlighted.

Sorry Lindi, my sentence was a little ambiguous. What I meant is that I couldn't find any reference on the page to hemorrhoid treatment with anal dilators, not that I couldn't find reference to hemorrhoids.

Depending on the person, long term enemas can cause the lower bowel to become lazy...it depends on the persons physical makeup...it effects some whereas others are fine...

A good diet with lots of fibre would help too...and laxatives taken long term can cause irritible bowel syndrome...something that has no proven cure...
