I'd love to start making some really cool features that just happen to have great sex in them but every time I pitch ideas I get the most confused looks... 'you mean it's not a parody?' How about some originality in Porn?

You don't have to sell me, LOL. Originality is one of the things I look for and appreciate most. I think it comes down to how can the studio make the most money with the least risk and cost. You might have to take the lead and show them more money can be made by being original! :)

I have to agree that many are beating the parody idea to death but it ain't me. We have made remarkably few of them when compared to other studios but our movies seem to sell better and win awards so I don't think we should stop just because others are killing it. I can mention a few titles right now that are completely ridiculous that other companies are making but I don't want to piss anybody off but yes there are too many stupid ones and a number of them being phoned in.
As for originality, I disagree with many that think it doesn't take creativity to do these types of movies. We are currently getting ready to shoot Not Charlie's Angels XXX and the entire process will take 4 months. I can also say that this is an expensive as fuck movie to make at over $100,000 I'm not bragging but I just want to let you know that X-Play is not taking the easy way or the cheap way. To gamble that type of money in this era of free porn takes balls or stupidity but we're making the movie as a co-production with Adam & Eve Pictures and X-Play and we think it will be a huge hit. It is going to be great and I am still working on the script as we speak.
So to sum up my thoughts: Yes I agree there are too many shitty and stupid parodies but were there too many gonzo movies a couple of years ago? Is it beaten into the ground yet? Yes but there is still room for the good ones and an audience that knows quality. www.sitcums.com

Don't kid yourself. Most feature porn I've ever watched borrows heavily from something mainstream or another porno film. As well as most mainstream films and tv shows doing the same. And I swear almost every gonzo or all-sex film I see, pretty much all play the same. At least parodies admit to what they are or recreate.

I've said it before on here, I'll say it again:
The incredibly bad parody pornos will find themselves weeded out as the consumers will know who to trust on what's being made and will buy them based on the directors having done enough of it.
But with each one the guys I do like produce them, I can't wait to buy them more and more. The important thing is they're trying to tell great stories based on the TV/movies while still keeping the sex scenes hot for everyone to enjoy.
As much as I understand you wanting more originality, I'm just glad to see the gonzo craze is out of the picture for the time being.

Jeff-- I've put my money up countless times. Last year I was AVN nom'd for "Total Interactive Control of Tabitha Stevens" MY MONEY PAID FOR THAT ONE. I'm probably one of the very few HBO certified and acclaimed producer/directors shooting in porn right now AND I've won International Film Festivals (Mainstream) In other words I'm a real filmmaker. Yes I actually graduated from film school once upon a time.
Dipshit? IMDB me.
Ever touched an Arriflex, Panavision Gold, Eclair, Aaton, Sony F900, Red One? Ever manned a 30 man crew traveling around the world for 6 seasons of shows for HBO/Cinemax as producer/director???
Sure, I'm a real dipshit.

I'm sorry Gary but you have to understand that all of your credentials and assorted accolades mean nothing here. You see, in the porn world, there is only Jeff Mullen. No one else matters and no one else exists. We mere mortals who toil away making mundane, pedestrian porn can only hope that one day we can even be so fortunate as to taste a drop of the perspiration falling from this man's talented, furrowed brow.
It's just the way it is. Love it or leave it.
I'm truly sorry :(

Why isn't Mike Quasar starring in his own Comedy Central special?
More proof, apparently, that there is no justice in this world.

LMAO-- Quasar did it again. He's one of the wittiest guys I've ever met. He called into a live show we were doing once and it took everything I had to keep from laughing out load. Thanks for the thoughts Mike. I actually read Mullen's first post with sincere interest and even took some of it to heart... then he comes back with a second post and makes it 'personal'. Why?
At any rate, I think it would be much better if talented producer/directors created alliances or at least nourished new ideas together rather than create conflicts. I mean after all isn't there a common enemy out there? Free internet porn, piracy, bad porn shot by 19 year olds who just got their Flipcam down at Best Buy... things like that.

I thought I WAS being funny but I guess my point is if people don't like a certain type of movie then don't buy it. It is simple American commerce and supply and demand principles at work. I get a bit tired of people ripping what some are finding success in regardless if other producers are drilling the porn parody into the ground. As for your credentials Gary, I am sure you are excellent in what you do and I think that is great that you have such skills so I just don't understand why you would come into the world of porn and rip guys with a lesser resume' than you. What do you have to gain with that approach? As for Mike Q, I was a bit surprised that you bit back like that and ripped my head off but I don't really take any offense from it because I know you are a good guy having a bit of fun.

Well now, let's break this whole thing down and see where we stand. I find timelines, bar graphs and pie charts useful..... well, maybe just timelines
Let's see....
Guy named Gary starts thread about how frustrating it is to attempt to sell "non" parody product to major porn studios.
Guy who makes porn parodies gives brief lesson on economics and skillfully inserts a plug for his next project - a parody.
Original guy who started post remains silent.
Guy who makes parodies calls guy who started thread a "dipshit", apparently in the nicest way possible.
Guy who started thread is offended and in self-defense, details a list of his accomplishments inside and outside of porn
Guy with too much free time posts sarcastic response to guy who makes parodies.
Guy who makes parodies wonders why guy who started thread has "ripped" him and then questions guy with too much free time as to why he posted scathing sarcastic remark.
I think that's pretty accurate so far.
My observation: I'm not an intellectual by any means but the sequence of events seem to bear out that Gary did not "rip" anyone until he himself was "ripped". I was merely making an attempt at comedy based on Jeff's reputation as a guy who never met a press release he didn't like. Jeff seems to be hurt by all of this for reasons unknown. I have now spent 8 minutes of my life here. I will now use xanax recreationally and get on with my day.
Thank you for your time.

Can't remember ever being called a 'dipshit'. That got under my skin. Water under the bridge now, so moving on...
I hope one day Quasar gets a HUGE budget to do a real comedy which allows him to reveal all his talent. Now that would be a funny, side-splitting and VERY successful movie!
Good Thoughts,

Bravo! I love it.
Mike writes: My observation: I'm not an intellectual by any means but the sequence of events seem to bear out that Gary did not "rip" anyone until he himself was "ripped".
How about Gary's original post which was titled: Can we chill on the porn parody plague sometime soon?
Is that not a rip? I took that as another rip. I'm not hurt at all by the comments but I do every once in a while get tired of people ripping on an entire genre of entertainment.
At X-Play we do things quite simply and that is to pay for every production we make so that we can make exactly what we want and market it how we choose. We don't ask any distribution companies for money so that we are in control. That works for us but not everybody. Why the rant Mike?

This is a rant?
You did make a very valid point though which is that everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and I can see how that might annoy you when you put in so much effort and then GooGoobler video also decides to jump in with "Almost-but-not-quite The Waltons". I think Gary's initial post speaks more to that frustration than any specific bone to pick with you.
But then you called him a dipshit
Now, Gary's a guy that I admire and respect so I threw in my 2 cents but we're all adults here so let's just agree that there are currently too many people shooting parody movies. You get a pass because you brought this ungodly plague upon us and do a very good job. I know you came from the music world (as did I ). Imagine you've got this amazing demo of incredible songs and every record company you shop it to says "It's good but could you make it sound more like Nickelback?" At some point you might get frustrated and pray that every member of Nickelback OD's and dies in a plane crash. Nickelback never actually did anything to you personally and you might be a little envious of their success but you're frustrated that the entire rock n roll world only wants bands that sound like Nickelback.
Gary is the guy with the demo tape. You are Nickelback.
I am what Derek Smalls referred to as "luke warm water". I'll go either way as long as I can pay my mortgage. My artistic integrity left with my liver years ago. They now live together in a small duplex in Panorama City. I appreciate that you've been very successful with the entire parody genre but I also understand the point of view of someone who wants to do something other than a parody being looked at like he is carrying an antelope corpse on his back.
Wow, this went places I didn't expect. Antelope corpse?
Anyways, let's just all agree to disagree and be friends :)
P.S. I don't mind Nickelback

Well said Mike. I enjoyed reading that and it does put a great perspective on things. I used to love Nickelback a few years ago until they made that video with all the hanging light bulbs and I thought what a waste of precious energy.
I pretty much agree with everything you just said. Now for the word dipshit; It is both a rip and a love tap so it is pretty harmless (but effective apparently!) When I was a kid my dad used that word often and I think he used it in place of 'Jeffrey' on numerous occasions. "Where did that dipshit go?" I would like to announce our next movie....Not Dipshit XXX actors yet to be determined. Shit we don't even have the cast completed for Not Charlie's Angels XXX so I guess I shouldn't be worried about Not Dipshit XXX anytime soon. Hey Gary, if we shoot it can we rent two of your big expensive cameras? LOL! I'm sure I wouldn't have a clue on how to turn them on- (Maybe, just maybe if they were 19 with tits I might be able to turn them on but only for a night or two before one of us loses interest or she gets the part whichever comes first!)
BTW: The Parody Plague will end only when I say it ends! XBiz just wrote that I am the prince of parodies. I am wondering who the fuck do they think is the king? I guess Axel Braun. Have a great weekend and Will Ryder says hello.

Just curious as to how many companies you actually pitched ideas to Gary? You don't have to name names. Unfortunately some of the more lesser known feature companies seem to have gone bankrupt or produce less films these days. I actually see few companies producing that many parodies really. Over the years I've gotten the impression there were fewer features being made because they tended to lose money because they were more expensive to make. I mean there certainly have been many independent feature directors over the years. I actually prefer them to the guys contracted actually.

I don't understand why anyone would be upset over companies making porn parodies. I mean while it may seem like there are a lot they are only a small percentage of the porn being released each month. All you have to do is just avoid them and watch the sort of porn that you want to watch.

^ Not to speak for anyone, but I don't think that was the intention of the OP - at least, aside from the title perhaps - I think the OP was saying that as a filmmaker he is finding it difficult to get funding for adult films that are *not* parodies. I, for one, don't hate on the parodies particularly, but I often bemoan the lack of original screenplay features being made (outside of Wicked etal, of course).

Fuck, it's like a love fest now. We are about to announce the cast for Not Charlie's Angels XXX in the next day or so. I can say that this will be the most expensive movie we have ever made. It is going to top Flight Attendants (Not Airplane XXX)in production dollars and make our normal spoof movies seem inexpensive by comparison. The movie will take place in Los Angeles and New York and damn I can't believe David Lord is making CHIPS. Fuck! That was on my list of movies to do but my business partner Scott David kept saying I think a porn movie about two dudes riding around LA on motorcycles seems gay. I beg to differ. Not the Mary Tyler Moore Show XXX is on the horizon! I am going to the Dukes of Hazard porn parody party tonight which should be fun.

Wow...this has turned into one of the silliest and most immature threads I've read in a while...
I'm so happy I self produce (which, BTW, means I'll be able to shoot another movie in, oh, 6 months).
Anyway, I'm pretty sick of the parodies, mainly because they're really not all that funny. I haven't seen any by Jeff, except the Cosby's one, and it was certainly better produced than the really, really poor ones, but still not very funny and too sex heavy.
Does production on them need to stop? Who in the hell cares? If Jeff and everybody else wants to keep on doing them, they should. People will get tired of them sooner or later as well.
But yeah, Gary is dead on...There need to be some more REAL MOVIES made with XXX, not just po-mo irony baiting junk....

While you're at it, mine as well throw in ...
The Six Million Dollar Man
The Bionic Woman
Golden Girls
Spiderman/woman
Incredible Hulk
Godzilla
Wonder Woman
Superwoman
50 ft. woman
Swamp Thing
Dark Shadows
Dracula
The Terminator
Star Wars
Big
The A-Team
MASH
Threes Company
The Twilight Zone
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Toy Story
Flipper
Miami Vice
Hawaii Five-O
Magnum PI
Batman/Catwoman
For the best movie/series ideas, head over to the Golden Globe or Oscars web sites and look at all the top movies ever made.Sometimes it's the titles that sell all by themselves. You'd be surprised how much work goes into that one thing.
And let's not forget music videos too! How about 99 Balloons! LOL.
... despite the lack of originality, maybe this needs to play out until there is a parody for every show, movie, play and music video ever done. The list is endless! Should last a few years or more, but then what will the industry do for ideas? I'm sure something will come up, LOL.

The reality of the situation is, what drives a studios desire to make a "real" feature vs a parody is one simple thing and that is the consumer. Right now the consumer is buying parodies whereas the sales for original scripted features was done.
I mean as a girl maybe I'm biased but most originally scripted features are so beyond stupid. At least with the parody we get a little humor with our porn or a story we can actually relate to.
Who didn't want to see Marsha Brady getting it on?
I think eventually the fad will die down and we'll go back to making stupid ass movies again but in the mean time as a consumer, I celebrate the rise of the porno parody because some of them are really pretty watchable, not just for the sex factor.
Can't ever recall saying that about a normal porn movie, maybe Pirates II aside.

^ That's a very different perspective from mine - which features did you find "stupid"? I've always thought the parodies were going out of their way to be "stupid" in a fun way. Meanwhile, Wicked and Vivid have put out comedies, thrillers, dramas etc that are well made and interesting (I can only assume you don't mean films from the 70's/80s - right?). I'm interested to know the titles you're referring to.

When porn has a story, selling the story starts with writing a great title. The formulaic titles may be legally safe, but they handicap the movies. With that restriction they don't seem worth the time and expense of production.

SPORTS. I'd like to see a lesbian sports movie that actually has sports, not just characters that briefly talk about sports before sex. Basketball, soccer, softball, college wrestling, etc.

to cover all the bases of g/g, b/g, and even b/b if that's what you want to shoot, a college track team supplies all you need, although the guys may protest the spandex uniforms.

Combining horror with porn is a volitile mix. That works for me. So does something with actual sports, something that gets their hearts beating faster and them sweating like vollyball.
Some ideas ...
A nude yoga slasher/vampire porn flick? (vampire + yoga, hmm!)
More sport themes .. scuba diving, hiking, horseback riding, racecar driving, modeling, hunting, boating, health club working out.

^ Nice idea Dracula. I like sports.
Off of Dracula's sports idea, I think it would be an awesome project if someone did a Bad News Bears women's softball team movie. Throw in some sexual tension between a male softball coach and pornstar players (sure he has to bang some of them). Sure someone might have to morph the storyline and make it a collegiate women softball team, but I know women's softball is pretty popular.
PS I can't believe I'm posting in the Feature Side, but...

Maybe someone could come up with a different story angle so it's fresh and not a parody? A porn movie featuring woman softball players doesn't HAVE to just be a Bad News Bears take off. Maybe it will be better! One thing is certain, there's never a shortage of ideas. Charn offered a few good ones too.

I think the thriller or melodrama genres work best with porn, although the kind of comedies that Alex De Renzy use to make also worked very well. Horror and pornography is a more difficult mix and even harder to do right these days with the big taboos around mixing violence and sex together.

Could be a lot of things really, just depends on how it's done, who is in it, and has hot sex scenes in it.
Sports is a great subect I must agree with others on. I wouldn't mind seeing a little more suspense or mystery in my porn also. Comedy always works for me too. And I absolutely love feature based around sex or sexual lifestyles. Sometimes pretense is wanted.

I like the sports idea, but only if the sex scenes are carefully integrated into the plot, and the film is made in a way that actually builds tension.
I remember how blown away I was (no pun intended) by Stiff Competition -- I genuinely cared who won the competition. It felt like watching Rocky III or something. The movie is silly, but somehow it's edge-of-your seat fun and still manages to be sexy. I realise I'm asking for the impossible, but even aiming toward this format would be cool.
I also agree with the horror ideas - but yeah, some of that material is difficult to mix with porn. Powertool Massacre did a good job (they had blood and a killer) but they still didn't show the kills on screen.
Here are my favourite themes for porn movies:
* Sex workers (centering around the trials and tribulations - and joys - of the sex workers themselves, a la Amanda By Night).
* Journeys/Road trips (farcical or otherwise). I like this format (like the Pretty Peaches series) because it's a way of having an ensemble cast, and different situations, without resorting to vignettes.
* Porn movies about porn movies (I also like mainstream movies about mainstream movies). I guess a porn movie about mainstream movies would kick ass too.
* Like the previous person noted, I like features that grapple with sex and relationships. And I mean, really grapple with it. This leads to some really complex sex scenes, not all of which need to be standard boner-fare.
My two cents.

What genres for a porn feature would i like to see? Private Eye/Noir and Western. Noir as kind of a period piece thing, 1930's-40's setting. Just seems a genre rife for porn, especially with the femme fatale type of character. And a good western themed porn is something I'd like to see at least once.

^ Dixie Ray, Hollywood Star (aka. It's Called Murder, Baby) is a pretty good film noir starring John Leslie.
The only thing close to a Western I've seen is Pussycat Ranch, but it's terrible.

I would personally like to see espionage and think this type has a huge potential.
From what I've heard/read, this isn't far from reality.

You know my favorite, a vampire porn flick, or even better, a ten season series. There's plenty of room for all the above suggestions too, but in my mind I see such incredible possibilities with the vampire character. The character can be humorous, serious or somewhere in between. It can have gore or not. Romance is a must though. Think of all the possibilities! Anyways, that's my favorite. I just need to find a way to sell it to everyone else, LOL.
