Is there a typical career progression of a porn girl? If so, what are they, and what causes them to move from one phase to another? In particular, are there some changes that indicate they're on the way up, and others that indicate their careers are in decline? Obviously there are lots of girls who are marginal on looks and never make it very far in the industry... but let's talk about the girls who have what it takes for a real career... two good examples to start with might be Gianna and Sasha Grey... both are attractive, but obviously they're completely different body types. According to IAFD, Gianna did one title in 2004 and started for real in 2005, just turned 25, and has 236 titles. Sasha started in 2006, is 20 years old, and has 120 titles. Questions: Are both girls in their prime? Seems like they both are on a lot of DVD covers... is that a good measure of their star power and earning ability? What will be the signs their careers are in decline? No longer being on the covers? Fewer scenes? More scenes with lesser producers/directors? Crossing limits they refused to cross before? What will cause their careers to finally decline? Overexposure -- tired of looking at Sasha's face and Gianna's tits bouncing? Chronological age -- it doesn't seem to be hurting Gianna yet, might it hurt Sasha first? Visible signs of age -- when Gianna's body fat sags too much and Sasha's face starts looking worn?
Hi, Well, the average porn consumer doesn´t know "how" the industry works. We don´t know how many scenes are in the "vault" and are to be released when either of them decides not to perform anymore. I agree about girls that have fucked themselves up with plastic surgery... there are so many girls who are naturally great looking and then they get horrible bolt-ons and duck lips. Well, I don´t know if they are getting a new look in order to stop a decline of their career. A few ones had their boobs done at the end of their career. The fans didn´t get to see them in action (?) after that. Girls who come to mind are these (one__two) I can´t recall any scene with their new boobs. I don´t know if a performer has the abillity to control how many dvds are being sold. The decline in dvd sales may not have to do with her performance or look at all. In the 90s, it was magazines, then a jump into hardcore movies maybe just girl/girl first but then guys, then it depended on what a girl would do (like anal, etc). Then a girl would gone on feature dance tours. After riding the wave for two or three years, a girl would fade. Now its different. Girls just jump in and start doing everything to make the most money possible quickly. Then they vanish. Sasha's career is different the 99.9% of other performers, because she can speak intelligently in mainstream interviews. She does not get shy and is not afraid of the tough questions. Unlike some other female performers who've also do mainstream interviews, Sasha does not come across as stuck up or bitchy, so that is a nice bonus for her. She is doing a good job of penetrating mainstream (so is Joanna Angel, another girl who is not afraid to talk and is good self promoter), so even though she's done all sorts of scenes, she will get to stay in the game. What got me thinking about this subject is articles I've read about careers of athletes, like NFL players. The average career of an NFL player is like 2 years... but that number is misleading, because 80% of the players don't have the talent to stay in the league after the first year (or even training camp). So if you separate those losers out, you're left with players who actually do have talent... and they tend to have longer careers that actually go through real progressions that you can see in their stats... early, prime, and decline. What's the most interesting is the decline, why they go into decline, how steep it is. Sometimes injuries force them out suddenly, sometimes age slowly takes its toll, sometimes they choose to retire on their own terms. Girls in porn aren't all that different... 90% of them wash-out in a year because they never had much going for them besides a willingness to do the porn in the first place. Then there's the smaller group that have some amount of real talent (be it attitude, sexuality, or just looks), who stick around for a while, get some level of name recognition, and then eventually decline and quit. So, I'm curious how long a talented female pornstar can stay on top, and what causes their careers to decline, and how steep the declines are.
Jenna Haze is arguably the top performer in the industry and has been around for more than 7 years. Her looks, body, and skills have not declined AT ALL. I think she has gotten better imo. It all depends on the person. If one takes good care of herself(ie no drugs, surgeries, etc.) and has the talent/drive to succeed, she can thrive for quite along time. Sasha is probably one of those people.
Agreed. Jenna had a girl/girl contract from Jill Kelly for over two years and when that was over she didn't rush back to making videos. She took her time. She has paced herself and been selective in what she is willing to do.
I agree with the post re: Jenna Haze. Long careers are not the norm, but the exceptions illustrate what is needed to maintain a strong fan base while gaining newcomers as they build their skills. Ultimately, there are good reasons why I'm drawn to girls in the first place and the girls who stand the test of time never diminish those qualities, they generally enhance and add to them. Edited to add - Gianna and Sasha have clearly different physical qualities, both paradigms of raw sexual appeal in their own right. Gianna and Sasha share something in common that adds to their distinct allure which is the ability, courage even, of being able to communicate their personality through their work. Adult of old always had the stigma of the faked scene, and as time goes on it's girls like these that blow that mold out of the fucking door! Jenna Haze is a good point -- she's had a long and successful career. Most girls with the "young and cute" look tend to fade pretty quickly, so no doubt Jenna has taken good care of herself.

This is a great thread and I don't want to divert it, but I'd just like to comment that one performer who was improved by surgery was Caramel. I've seen her in scenes with and without the implants and without them she just didn't look complete. She's a girl with a big, round ass and getting the big, round tits balanced her out and gave her a wonderful symmetry [not to mention a wonderfully fuckable rack].
They're two performers that appeal to different markets for different reasons. Sasha started out doing typical gonzo stuff but seems to be working towards more "high-end" companies and features. Sasha really doesn't hit all the fetishes/genres that Gianna does. Gianna is big in the "big tits", "big ass", and interracial markets. Although Sasha has a fantastic ass she usually doesn't exploit it for those types of movies. As a fan I guess I like Gianna's career better but that's mostly because she does so much of the kinds of movies I like I don't have to go out of my way to see her. Sasha's movies I typically get them just to see Sasha and usually don't care about the rest of the cast or theme. Sasha's very very sexy and Gianna's just fun to watch. As a fan I like Gianna's career. From a performer pov Sasha's is the better career to have. But they've both made their marks and will probably be in the biz and be fan favs for as long as they both wish to be.
