I have noticed that a lot of companies have different DVD case colors. Like RLD and PXP have clear cases, Evil Angel has red cases, some other companies that I saw in the porn store were white, blue and green. Why cant they all just use the same standart-black case?
One color box? That would be SO boring! That's like saying there should only be one sex or one political party (or is there only one?) or one breed of dog. And what of blondes and redheads? Should their boxes be black too? maybe I should buy stock in L'Oreal.
I love the multi colored boxes, as GS said, it would be boring without them. Honestly what I would like to see is each company come out with thier very own color and style of case. It would be cool to organize them by color and hence studio that way.
Just out of curiosity, Alex, why would want them all one color, I mean what the difference does it make?
Evil Angel started using Red shells on their video tapes as an attempt to reduce piracy. Since the red shells were not readily available, it wasn't as easy for people to illegally duplicate and sell copies of their tapes as if they were the original thing.
My guess is that the red case was an extension of that logic.
As for other companies, I would think that having cases of different colors helps their product stand out on the shelf apart from the discs in black cases.

Hmmm Alex, you may have a point there.
When Henry Ford started mass producing automobiles, you could get a Ford car in any color you wanted - as long as it was black.
Nah, the color of the case doesn't matter to me. The quality of the DVD and the content on the DVD is more important to me.

I just really like when all of my DVDs are in the same cases. I like when they all look equal. And if its the black case then it looks official.
I don't really care about the case color, since I don't really organize my adult collection at all. The biggest problem with colored cases is that it's harder to find replacements if the spindle breaks. I've got a bunch of extra red and black cases, but finding green or clear ones is much harder.
I'm confused. If you don't care about the case color, then why do you attempt to replace a case with a broken spindle with another case that's the same color as the original? Why don't you just replace it with what you have on hand?
I don't care what color case the studio happens to use, but I try to keep the colors the same since I re-sell a lot of my titles when I get tired of them (and people who buy them tend to be picky about such things).
I have no problem with colored cases, but I do think it'd be nice if some of the companies started switching to the new slimline cases in order to save shelf space. If you buy a lot of discs in a year it could make quite a difference.
I just wish the cases (and especially their spindles) were a tad more sturdy and that the spindles were better designed to hold the DVDs during shipment!!! (But, slimmer would be nice.) ~ GS

Yeah, I think that slim cases would be a way to go, I thought about this before too. Standart size cases were generaly designed to hold a DVD/CD inside on the right side, and a booklet on the left side. Since most (and probably all) companies dont use the booklet side then they could switch to the slim cases. They save space and they use less plastic (like 5%-10% less).
The color of cases can be like a signature for companies. When DVD cases are lined up on a video shelf the color can be the difference between a sale or not. Cases and boxcovers do make a big difference, just about every porno section has their titles "bookcased" so slimlime is a nice idea but anybody who does it would shoot themself in the foot unless they offered it as an "option" on internet or direct sales.

GS - I thought it was funny, but then again, you're funny a lot, so I didn't take special notice. :)
As for the slimline cases, I agree with EagleSpirit. The spine of the case is often the only thing that is showing in adult bookstores (and, for that matter, on the shelves of the distributor's shelves in their warehouse.) It would make it extremely difficult to locate the correct titles. It would be an interesting option for online retailers, but then the existing paper cover would no longer be the correct size.
Anyway, as for colors, Bill is correct (again). Evil Angel started with the red VHS shells to help curb piracy. The red DVD cases help with that also, since it's difficult to find the exact red cases we use. They're out there, I'm just saying it's a bit more difficult. Also, on the shelves, it helps Evil Angel fans locate our product more easily, just as I'm sure the other colors help fans of those company. I was told at the Vegas convention by the Virgin Megastore people that they LOVE the case color idea because it helps them keep their sections more organized. I identify with the white cases that house a large percentage of my daughter's DVDs because that's Disney's case color.
