An excellent read.

"I did sex work for the same reason I had always done wage labor: because I needed the money. There was no glorifying that.

And yet I knew that needing the money did not feel the same as not choosing. I knew that taking off my clothes in middle-aged men's basements and condos did not feel the same as being raped felt."

"When I did not have a good attitude, when I cried from exhaustion, Kaz said, 'You'll cry when you have no money. Go to work.' And I went.

I went even when I didn't want to, and even when I had plenty of cash in the bank, simply because I didn't want Kaz to get mad at me. If you have never had sex for money, it might be easy to see this as a story about coercion and consent instead of a story about work. It would have been much better if I'd been rich and could have worked only when I wanted to. It would have been much worse if I'd had no work at all."

Wow. What an extraordinary piece that is.

A quick google has also revealed a raft of further excellent and educational material by Lorelei Lee around this and related topics.

Yeah, I've got a lot of time for her. Lorelei is an extremely smart and articulate lady who rubbishes stereotypes of performers in the industry.

I teach one of her essays in my rhetoric class. Students love it. One of my favourite pieces of writing is Lee's "Feminist Porn Star Manifesta" in The Feminist Porn Book. An incredible article that bears multiple readings. Lee is hands down one of my favourite living writers.

Reflecting on this, I suspect I'm probably guilty of underestimating her based on (what I thought was still) her profession - so I've certainly learnt something there, as that's a bias I didn't think I had.

Thanks for pointing out The Feminist Porn Book, it's now on the reading list!
