I guess that's why it's Den/CAVR's list, and not Melissa's or anyone else?

Belladonna only had 3 releases that I reviewed this year. Must do 7 per year to be eligible.

Twisted Tommy does Eastern Euro movies. Check them out, they are pretty hot.

Den,
I think that you need a better methodology than just averaging the score of each title that you review.

Based on last year's review's, Jules Jordan, Francesca Le' and TT Boy are the only directors with 3 titles that each have a rating greater than 9.0, yet none of them are on your list for director of the year. Granted, you review 50 TT Boy titles, which would give his titles an advantage. But you only reviewed 9 titles each of Jules' and Francesca's, with 3 from each of them being in your top 30 or so (It hard to get a quick count of the totel because of duplicates across the different lists).

Personally, I think that the Director of the Year should really go to directors who put out the best titles of the year, not the ones with the highest overall average. You're rewarding someone for consistantly being above average rather than rewarding directors who take risks and sometimes hit one out of the park and sometimes strike out.

I'm watching porn for the guy (or girl) who hits the home runs every 2 or 3 at bats. Not they guy who hits singles and doubles all of the time.

I disagree. I want to nominate the Director's that I can count on for all of their releases.

It is for the body of work for the year and I am looking for a 'home run' all the time, not just most of the time.

Seems fair to me.

What is your methodology suggestion?

Thanks,
Den

But I don't think that you are getting that. You are getting guys who hit a home run or two along with and a few doubles and triples.

They 3 people leading the league in home runs (which I'm equating to reviews scores > 9) aren't even on the ballot.

I don't know. The range of reviews that you do from director to director (as many as 88 for the most reviewed director), makes it nearly impossible for an average of all reviews to be a statistically fair (especially when you consider that you're not reviewing every title from each director). One bad review for someone who only has 7 of his titles reviewed will bring his average down significantly more than someone that has had 15 or 20 titles reviewed.

Maybe it should be a hybrid methodology. Use an average for a part of the nominations and then look the percentage of movies reviewed for given directors that appear in the top 5 or 10% of the movies that you reviewed for the year.

Just using the numbers using the directors with 7 or more titles reviewed, you have 938 reviews this year. From what I saw, there were about 30 titles with scores > 9.0, which is about 3% of the titles that you reviewed. You reviewed 9 titles each from Jules & Francesca. Both of them had 33.3% of the titles that you reviewed of theirs fall in the top 3% of all titles that you reviewed this year. I don't see how people who do that can be excluded from a list of potential Directors of the Year.

The only director, who made the list, that's even close to that is Denis Marti at 28% (2 of 7). I just think that there should be greater consideration to the people at the absolute top level a significant percentage of the time, regardless of the overall average.

hey scipio, thats a pretty shitty answer to a valid point made by a girl who is booked by everyone all year. if she hasnt heard of him, thats a pretty big point. either way, what a glib answer.

Both have been nominated in the past.

JJ has won Director of the Year many times.
Mike John has won a DVD of the Year award.

Sorry, neither made it this year.

If it were Most Popular award, both would be nominated.

Put me down for a vote for Rodney Moore, I find the ones who are nominated very weak. I mean it's about quality, not quantity.

They've been nominated and won in the past, so doing great work this year disqualifies them from even being nominated? Dude, you're crapping on your own review system...

What?

Mike John didn't do enough releases that I reviewed. He has promised to send me DVDs for review and the next one he sends me will be the first one! I don't go and rent DVDs anymore.

JJ didn't make the top 10 in points.

I don't understand your point?

How in the hell did Jules Jordan and Jake Malone NOT make it on this list? WTF?

Yet another reason why I tend to ignore polls like this. You can't tell me that these guys shouldn't at least be considered in the running. I'd be happy to produce a list of Jake Malone movies from '05 that really rocked (and probably did quite well at the box office too).

In looking at the reviews, I thought that Den had a problem with his scoring. Then I realized that Den has a "Choking Policy". Apparently, in 2005, the highest score that any movie can receive that has any choking in it is an 8.5 and if there is more than one occurrence of choking the highest score is an 8.00 (those numbers change to 8.0 and 7.0 respectively in 2006). If you take a look at the list of "All Sex Reviews", by far the most common score given is an 8.5. In nearly every case it's because the disc had choking in it.

That's why Jules Jordan isn't on the list for Director of the Year. The 4 titles that he received an 8.5 for really had overall ratings of 9.01, 9.03, 9.05 and 9.04.

I realize that they're Den's awards and he makes the rules. But when the result of those rules produces a list of nominees for Director of the Year like the one above, then whole thing seem like a waste of time to me.

Yeah, there are some directors on that list who actually belong there. But, IMO, they are in the minority.

As far as I'm concerned, voting in Den's poll constitutes agreement with the "rules". I don't. Therefore, I won't be voting.

Smart move, I do the same like with the polls from Roger T.Pipe also. They are way too subjective and you end up with people who have no business in being in any poll, I mean Bobby Rinaldi?

I agree, same here.

I can't remember the choking and slapping in any JJ flick being that significantly worse than in a Brandon Iron title, though.

Thanks Bill for all your research to answer some questions for all of us.

I was really wondering if Evil Angel had done anything to seriously piss Den off this year. Apparently, it might just be that girls get choked in our movies.

On a personal level, I'm very sad that Den feels so badly about choking. On his site, he listed me as Best New Female in 1996. Yet, in over half of the movies I'm in, I get choked. I understand his rule wasn't made back then, but it makes me feel that he probably didn't enjoy watching my scenes, or was bothered when watching them. Thing is, the reason I was choked in so many of those scenes (mind you, choking was not nearly as predominant way back then) was because before the scene, when the guy and I would be talking about our likes and dislikes, I would tell him that among my likes were kissing, anal, slapping my face once I was really turned on, and yes-- a hand on my through while I was getting fucked.

Den,

I just want to say I think your list is full of quality directors man. I think some of the people giving you a hard time would only be happy if your list was all Evil Angel and RLD directors....

Belladonna
Erik Everhard
Jake Malone
Joey Silvera
Jonni Darkko
Jules Jordan
Justin Slayer
Manuel Ferrara
Mike John
Vince Voyeur

Might as well call it the battle of RLD/Evil Angel award.

I think a gonzo director that puts out 5 or 6 sub par or a bunch of the exact same titles in a year shouldn't be an automatic best director choice simply because of their past directing, their past spectacular performing, or the fact the company they work for is huge.

Seeing people/directors like Jewel De'Nyle, Chris Streams, Sean Michaels, Denis Marti, and Tim Von Swine get noms is great to me.

Oh Lord, no, please ...

These are Den's awards, he can make up whatever rules he likes.
There are names on the list that are a little odd, for me.

Then again, suggesting that directors like Jules or Joey or Mike John don't belong on such a list is just as bizarre. I don't think Evil and RLD (until recently) necessarily have a lock on the best directors in porn, but they come pretty damn close, and it's probably no coincidence that the "own your product" policies (again, RLD less so, especially now) are what set both companys' business models apart from the rest of the competition.

Thanks for that. I can always count on you to be you. Of course when you refuse to participate then your voice is wasted.

Of course I have the "polls" and then the awards. The polls is called a Fan Fave for a reason. It's a popularity contest. Hopefully the voters pick people who deserve to win. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Anyone who argues with that poll is just arguing "favorites." The awards on the other hand are more open for discussion and that's in another thread. There were some great points raised and some that were just snippy. You take the good with the bad and in the end, the discussion is half the fun.

The point of any list like this is for discussion and recognition. Those on Den's list should be proud that they made it. A discussion about, and disagreement with, any such list is fun. On the other hand when it gets personal and snippy then it's just pathetic and sad.

Den has his system, I have mine and yes Ramsey you have your own subjective view of porn.

All porn is subjective.

Personally I like Den's no choking policy. This year I think I will just toss aside any DVDs that have squir...aww hell, let's be honest, pissing, cream pies, fake gagging noises and a few select male peerformers who shall remain nameless.

It is also limited to what we see. I haven't seen a Bobbi Rinaldi movie since Cherry Mirage left that company. On the other hand, I've seen a lot more Mike John movies than Den has.

Good work as always Den. I don't have to agree with a list to understand just how difficult it is to compile.

You're the best and always will be.

I agree. To me it all the fun! I love the discussion. This is what ADT is all about. I can take the criticism and I am learning from it.

I prefer to hear what people think, especially from people who disagree.

I hope this discussion can be continued at the ADT Party in Vegas in a few days.

As strong as I feel about this, I also agree that others feel just as strong about their position.

As Rog has said and knows, it's a lot of work and sleepless nights putting these awards things together. Rog does a hell of a good job!

Thanks to all.

What's the point of voting when a fantastic director and performer like Justin Slayer isn't even nominated but instead we get directors like Robby D and Van Styles. I guess some men are born to greatness, others have greatness thrust upon them.

Why not just put every director in for the award...someone will always come in and say, "Ooh, ooh...you forgot this guy."

I'd hazard a guess that Den watches and reviews more porn than any individual here. He's got a system. If you think his system is so bad, great. Go out and devise your own system, don't just sit back and crack his.

Happy New Year.

It could be argued that DEN sees more than anyone else - or at least ranks somewhere up there at the top - quantity-wise. I've known him for about 20 years now and he never makes things personable against anyone but...he has strong convictions about choking and anything potentially dangerous - and for this I say good for him for having such a strong feeling about keeping the people in the industry live and well. Whether choking is dangerous, well...like he says, it is just a matter of time before we really find out...

As for complaints about missing a director in his list: most companies do send him screeners (and rightly so!) and for those who may not: don't complain about not being listed. That is only fair.

As for Jules Jordan, he has made it pretty clear that, if not penalized for choking, his overall rating would be waaaay above most everyone else's.

Den also enjoys making little comments intended to make people think about things. He doesn't have an ounce of hate or animosity in his body. He does this w/o managing to harbor personal feeling against anyone - but again he may like a person but dislike their actions when it is detremental to the overall health of the individual or industry.

Remember, folks, he does this for his love for the industry and does it all on his own. No bribes, no payment for writing his reviews, nothing.

Shouldn't a Best Director award be for Quality of work, not quantity? The best directors this year were people like Joone, Eon McKai, and David (Crawford) Lord. But because they don't direct a ton of titles, they don't get mentioned. Silly.

You're right. What is the point of voting if you don't like the choices. Thank you for the laugh on this one.

That last line was supposed to be ironic I hope after what you said above.

Thanks Ramsey, I needed that.

PS: The "voting" on my site was based on nominations made by other people and Slayer was part of that field. So if you could have voted for him. You can complain that Robby and Van were nominated for the other award and not Slayer, but that isn't a voting thing. Sorry I haven't quite jumped on the Slayer bandwagon just yet, but if you keep shaking those pom poms hard enough, I just might see what others have thrust upon him.

I guess that depends on the criteria. AVN has an award for Best Director based on one particular movie. I do mine like XRCO and Den, based on the body of work. I considered Joone for my nomination list and would vote for him as the Best Director of a Feature this year. I only saw one movie by David this year and considered him as well. In the end I went with directors who had more than one outstanding movie each.

I almost did a "Worst Director of the Year" and oddly enough two people mentioned in this thread would have been up for that one. Just goes to show that everything is subjective when it comes to porn.

Well, I certainly do not condsider myself "the boston strangler" I believe I do consentual, sensual "rough" sex in my movies. More and more starlets enjoy this type of sex, obviously if a girl is uncomfortable with this type of thing it doesnt happen.

Den has his reasoning for what he does, I consider him a great guy and his site provides lots of usefull info. I do think his list of directors has alot of gaps but....so be it. I find it amusing that one of the nominees was someone who (I believe)blatently called him out on his stance on rough sex....

hope to see you in vegas den!

I just want to thank Den and Rog for doing what they do. I hope that people instead of focusing so much on who got noms would instead remember that they got to see so many good scenes by their fave girl or girls this past year and look forward to meeting them in Vegas. I think it's great to be recognized and to see my fave performers, directors, etc. be recognized for their hard work and I'm not going to bash Rog or Den on how they chooses their awards. I know who I enjoyed watching and hopefully I'll get several chances to thank all those people in the coming days.

first off, thanx to Den and Rog since this is my first time in the running for anything, and Im stoked to have even gotten this far(in each poll respectively). now to address sort of an 'issue' here in this thread. Im sure some of the other directors in this batch had a similar predicament to myself whereas I didnt get to pick and choose my projects, nor how many I was going to shoot. my tenure at PXP/RLD as an inhouse shooter had me in charge of whatever projects they gave me (along w/Jake Malone and D.Luger), unlike the others who 'owned' their titles and could do whatever the hell they wanted, once a month. sometimes I had 3 titles to finish, other times just 1. there is always a bottom line, and I just tried to make the best vids I could, all things considered.I'll be honest, it feels good to be recognised, and I did work hard as hell this past year in and around (what was) an exceptional collection of pornographers/performers, and I thank all of them for any and all of their contributions to my projects. hopefully 06' will continue to bring more of us 'unknowns' up to the surface w/the juggernauts who've ruled absolutely these past years, (i.e.; Mike John, Jules, Joey Silvera, Stag, etc,..). to any and all, ALL regards. lates, Von S.

p.s.; god bless America.

I wrote a longer post, but it was essentially a flame, so I scrubbed it.

I'll just reiterate that these are Den's awards and he can list whoever he wants, even if neither you or Melissa have heard of one of the directors, and that I'd bet good money that Den has seen more porn (probably in one year) than yourself and Melissa combined.

Feel free to make your own set of awards though, if Den's poll (a poll on the internet) incenses you that much. You can even fill all the nom spots with your friends.

you know what, flame away.......and i will bet good money that both melissa and I were smart enough to hit the SEARCH button on ADT and realize that there is exactly ZERO mention of a director named twisted tommy until den includes him in the director of the year poll. so i was making that point. you are acting like i asked den who jules jordan was?

last, if den wants to post his personal picks for awards, then he is leaving himself open to OUR opinion about those picks. so get off your high horse. thats MY opinion. :)

Hear hear. I mean just because Den watched more porn than any of us doesn't mean we can't question his picks, at least that's the way I see it and especially because his list has names that are at least very questionable. I mean how can anyone take this seriously when they are no Evil Angel director on that list? Evil Angel puts out the best stuff period while RLD and PX are just unoriginal copycats.

Some people who've posted to this thread need to: relax, take a pill (a tranquilizer), not take things SO seriously, live and let live, allow people to disagree/have a different opinion with them/than they do (It's O.K. to disagree/have a different opinion), and get it through their THICK skulls that porn is HIGHLY subjective.

Melissa Lauren:
I respect your liking what you like sexwise. If you want to do it, do it. I'm glad that you like so called "rough sex" and that it's done with your consent. But doing anything dangerous requires justification and precautions being taken, plain and simple.

You can never please everyone as everyone has their own oppinion on what's hot and what's not so any poll or award show etc. will piss someone off. It's just nice to be noticed for your hard work that's the bottom line.

I'm refering more to what's been done to you than what you've done. I'm only refering to what I'm aware of, your being choked. God only knows what other things you do on camera or off. I'm no Melissa Lauren expert. I haven't seen all your movies. Therefore, I don't know if you have had done to you other dangerous acts or whether or not you've done something dangerous. But there's no denying that choking IS dangerous. Just because something feels good doesn't nessasarily mean you should do it. Some things in this world that feel good are risky or hazardous or dangerous or all three. No one here at ADT wants to log in one day and read that you've DIED as a result of being choked or otherwise for that matter. We care about your well-being. Please remember all of this.
