My burner drive has suddenly started to try and "read" from the drive every four or five minutes. There is no disc in the player, but it keeps trying. Whenever it tries, it effects everything I am working on, whether it be, listening to music, playing a game, etc. When its music, it sounds like a skip on the disc. There is no spyware or adware on my system as I sweep everyday for these things and found nothing. Anybody know what this is? Thanks [Link] |

Have you tried booting another OS? Got an old DOS disc handy? The Windows installation CD may let you quit to DOS. Boot the other OS and make sure the burner can be accessed by reading the contents of a CD. Personally I'd recommend completely deleting the 'C:\WINNT' and 'C:\Program Files' directories and all files in 'C:\' before reinstalling. | jamesn Senior Member Cambridge, MA 750 Posts 1/04 | Posted - Sep 18 2004 : 2:21PM if it's not already, try it set to "master" instead of slave, then if you're comfortable looking inside your case, i'd check the jumpers on it(most stuff in the last few years is supposed to be on "cable select". it almost sounds like it's not getting enough juice by spazzing out like that, you may want to check out what your rails are reading for voltages(12V is the most often underpowered and would cause problems like this). if it's way off, that's the likely culprit.
