I don't think it's legal to produce porn there but some Japanese companies have offices in Hong Kong to sell their uncensored material they can't sell and produce in Japan, but I don't know the situation in Taiwan which inhabitants are of Chinese origin and language.
I know for sure of the existence of movies subtitled in Chinese and Korean ,I once had one it was even uncensored

To produce or to produce and sell?
Some internet sellers appear to be based in Hong Kong , though Hong Kong has a particular status and they might only have their address in there but their warehouse might be elsewhere

I don't get it. Why should it be illegal?

I fear the concept of porn and the sex industry in general is far too entrepreneurial and free market for the commos to tolerate. Having said that, Hong Kong does a booming trade in soft-core movies, so there is some leniency there.

Hong Kong has a Financial Market either, it was a British Administration until recently, it has a particular status , has some kind of independence , some federal like status and in his territory there's more freedom of trade than in the rest of China
Also I don't believe it is a matter of commos it is forbidden in India too, and almost everywhere in southern far east , Japan , Korea, Thailand and maybe Philippines and Taiwan (not sure about this latter) are the exceptions
It's not Should, Would or Could, it is forbidden by Chinese Laws

^ Why???
Is there a reasonable explanation for it?
Nobody is forcing them to watch it/ perform it if they don't like it. I hope.
Or is the very free-will banned in China?
I know nothing about their culture or they way they do stuff, that's why i'm asking so many questions. Please bare with me! :-)

Man China is not a free country , it's a communist dictatorship , the Internet from outside is heavily censored and they still have some 10.000.000 people in their "re-educational camps" (lagers basically)many of them just because they expressed disagreement with the government.
Now you really want to know why porn is forbidden?
Be also aware that even in the USA to produce and film porn is legal only in California

when i lived in china, even walking around beijing or shanghai, if you turn off onto little side alleys, you can see vcd shops selling "instructional" videos- mostly softcore stuff.
definitely hong kong i was able to pick up japanese stuff, and the occiaisonal wicked feature came up too if you shopped around. not just vcd but bodegas even had magazines. i imagine macau would be similar, but i wasn't looking

You will probably find that many of these repressive sexual laws in Asia actually arose during colonial occupation or, in the case of Japan, by US military laws after WWII. The Shinto, Buddhist and Hindu religions are full of outrageously erotic stories and representations of sex in art - in fact, much is recognized as the best erotica/porn in literal sense ever produced. Most Asian countries have a relaxed approach to sex generally, but tend to have very inconsistent and conservative laws that have been carried over from Victorian times.
China has some excellent brothels that the authorities turn a blind eye to, mainly because the girls working there are Mongolian or from the outer provinces and are not Han Chinese. I am sure porn is produced, but for a very limited market. If you cannot openly advertise or sell your porn product there is not much incentive to make it. It is far easier to simply smuggle Japanese porn into the country if you want some porn.

Well, to have erotic literature doesn't mean that free sex is tolerated , the Arabian One Thousand and One Nights (aka Arabian Nights) for example is full of erotic situations , to the point that Galland's translation (in French) very common in France and continental Europe made prior to that of sir Richard Burton (in English ) is heavily censored, some part have been cut out completely but added some stories that weren't in the original
Islamic culture never allowed free sex at least not for Muslim women.

It was illegal in the USA a few decades ago ?
Where have you been.
Try stealing something in Iran and see what happens to you.
Every country has different laws.

@Digmen1 You haven't followed my reasoning.
It's job just like any other job. Why should anyone care, or be offended, or even think of laws against porn? Like i said in my first post: is someone holding the performers at gun point to do them scenes? Are the viewers forced to watch porn scenes against their will? As long as there is consent from all those involved in a scene, i can't see any conceivable reason to forbid it.
About my age: dude, i'm not 100 to know what it was like decades ago. I'm in my 30's, that much i'll give you.

No offense but it's not about age, it is about basic knowledge about the world. Different nations, different cultures, different religions, different customs, different governments, different times, different laws, etc. etc. Some things are beyond (your notions of) logic and common sense. But, I assure you, everyone has their share of illogical rules/customs, if examined objectively from an outsider's perspective.

I find it difficult to believe that porn is not produced some places in China the country is so huge and corruption is widespread. There are a lot of things that are illegal the world over but go on if someone can make money. Prostitution is illegal in communist nations such as Vietnam, Laos, Cuba and China but it can be found virtually everywhere just not in the open, rather the underground where it is masqueraded within massage parlors, beer bars, night clubs and hair cutting shops.

^In the underground/illegal economy. there's no point in producing your own porn when you can just steal and replicate porn made by others. It'd be a total waste of money. Prostitution is different; it requires real actual women. Illegal porn just requires a computer with a CD/DVD burner.

You do know that to produce porn is legal in California only, don't you?
as for the rest, well it's called history , I'm European but even I know that pornography hasn't always been tolerated in the USA

I watched some Chinese porn once and I really liked it. The only problem was that after I was done, within 30 minutes I felt the urge to whack off again.

My nationality is not the matter. Or anybody else's. I just want to make a point that this is a job like any other job. It should not be regarded otherwise. Why should it be any more different than horror movies or drama movies or movies with explicit killing scenes?

You are right but it is because of societal hangups with sex that people are conditioned to think that way.
I can make a similar comparison to nudist beaches. Many young people will strip nude at nudist beaches in parts of the world but you never, ever would see a young American go completely nude at any nudist beach, anywhere, even if it is legal.

^We're still debating this, i don't want to make it look like i'm picking a fight with you: if we are discussing taste in films i for one don't like to see killing in my movies. I think explicit movies about killing people in the most horrible ways conceivable should be against the law, not a mere sex act. But then again, i choose to not watch them, maybe other people get their kicks from them, it's not my place to decide for other individuals. Different strokes for different folks. That's morally wrong, not a man and a woman/group of women having sex. Can we at least agree on that?
Moving towards China again. And continuing my idea, porn should be free anywhere, one individual should not have the power to decide over an entire country of over 2,000,000,000 people on what to produce and watch. That is morally wrong and totally fucked up.
To clear this thing about nationality: i'm European, and i was razed on the idea that if you don't like what's on, change the god damn channel. That should be the answer to all of our problems. Not forbidding something that we don't like.
"The prostitution rests." :-)

What part of "Dictatorship" is unclear for you?
China is not a democracy is not a free Country, many workers in there are little more than slaves , Chinese people has many more vital problems than free porn

Making porn in China could land one in a lao gai (GULAG) for quite a few years. The only thing riskier than making porn in China would be making in next door in the DPRK or in Iran.
