This allows the mainstream to accept her as damaged goods and by giving her another opportunity they are doing the decent thing, because they are the heroes after all. The viewer gets to feel superior because they have graciously accepted this fallen women into the light. She's better now, she's rehabilitated. She's normal, just like us. Waaaaay off topic here, but I'd never heard the word "palooka" before, as an insult or in any other way.
