At the beginning of porn in the late 60s and early 70s often performers were paid $75-100 or $150 for the woman performers to do a loop. Rates for features seem less predictable during this time but $100 a day seems most common. But by the late 70s and early 80s when budgets were bigger than they ever would be again, sometimes in the 6 figure range, it seems that $1000 became the standard for top performers in the top pictures. Once the VHS and gonzo era hit it seems that rates, despite inflation, have stayed the same for decades (!) at around $1000 per scene. Does this make sense? Are some classic era performers exaggerating their rates or did the pay for gonzo and all-sex really stay so low for so long? [Link] |

In the documentary X-RATED AMBITION: THE TRACI LORDS STORY, a producer notes that they would have paid Lords whatever she wanted. She demanded $1000. That was in 1984. They were as followed: Vanessa Del Rio: $2000 a day for her last film (at that time) Marlene Willoughby: $1000 a day Marilyn Chambers: $2000+ a day plus a percentage of the profits Kelly Nichols: $1200 a day I'm sure other stars from that era like Seka, Annette Haven, Veronica Hart, Samantha Fox, Lisa De Leeuw made comparable salaries as well. Colleen Brennan said she made $800 a day in her Rialto Report interview. Over at the Distribpix facebook page they posted a document that said Jennifer Welles got $10,000 for the 11 days of filming Inside Jennifer Welles. According to the liner notes of Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle, Annie got $10,000 well. Other performers in the movie got $250 a day. John Leslie was said to have been one of highest paid male stars back then. Edited by - zanders59 on 3/23/2016 3:54:10 PM |

No doubt because despite all the talk about the 'billon dollar' industry porn was the profit margins for everyone became much smaller in the gonzo era. There was a Forbes article years ago that found during the height of the DVD boom Stagliano was taking home $1 million a year. Not chump change but not near the kind of money that Reuben Sturman was making in his era. I've read (probably in the Eric Schaeffer essay on the industry) that Adam & Eve was one of the most successful companies out there on the basis of their mail-order sex toys. Makes sense too. I wonder how they're doing now? My guess is a lot better than many others. |
