Black Coffee's list of Golden Age Classic's on DVD's has notations for ones that were known to be edited at the time. It can be found here. Adding more edited classics to that list might make it easier to find them.
Are you talking about the NUTECH "Classics Collection" version? This is the one I have, along with "Aunt Peg's Fulfilment". I'd be interested to know what's missing because it's been so long (20 years??!!) since I saw any other versions that I didn't notice any cuts this time round.
Juliet Anderson was the woman responsible for getting me into hardcore porn waaaaaaaaaaay back in the early '80s when I'd just started at University. And as a result I've had a "hard spot" for her ever since!!!
If you find a web site that sells classics in the original form ... let me know. I would appreciate it.
I bought Taboo 2 and it was sliced up (or should I say edited). So was Maid in Manhattan featuring Vanessa Del Rio. I hesitate now when I think about buying classic porno.
Somebody must be selling their original in the used form at the very least.
I think I know what's happening with some of the edited classics. The movies were released in their original form to theatres. Once vhs got big, the companies would edit them for vhs release because they were afraid of prosecution. Now all that's really left are the vhs to transfer to dvd, a lot of companies don't want to spend the money to go back and make yet another master tape from the original print of the move to then transfer over to dvd, so they use the already available edited vhs version. Also, a lot of these classics are being released on dvd by companies that didn't originally release the film version, so all they have is what was given to them on tape when they bought the dvd rights to the movies from the original company. In some cases there are two vhs versions of movies, one edited and one not. Here's what I noticed about Blonde Fire (I-candy). I rented the old vhs version (Caballero) at my local store and then bought the dvd (I-Candy), there is about 10 seconds cut from the dvd version where John Holmes slaps a girl around with a gun. Do these companies really believe that the government is going to prosecute someone for a movie that's over 25 years old? It's ridiculous.
I saw the original version on VHS first for both of the features I mentioned. I loaned somebody one tape and the other original was lost during a move. I re-ordered for VHS copies not DVDs.
So the theatre theory sounds good, but not completely accurate. It might be accurate for the late 70's feature films, but less likely accurate for the mid 80's feature films.
I'm aware that editing is done for legal reasons. However, they should tell their buyers that the product you are buying is an edited version .
I guess it depends on what you consider a classic, but look for Evolution Erotica's CLASS-X collection being released as we speak. It's the early Tom Byron "Lord of Asses" releases and other films of that period in Tom's icon-esque career. These are re-mastered DVD9's of titles previously only available on poorly replicated VHS. Even if you have the originals, you need to clean up your collection by purchasing these DVD editions. If you don't have these films, they are truly timeless pieces that stand equally as strong in today's market, as they did when they were originally released...which is surely the telltale sign of a true "classic".
A long time ago I had "Insatiable 2" on Beta (remember that format?). But if I ever view the DVD version I wouldn't be able to tell what was cut out, mainly because I haven't seen the movie in almost two decades and couldn't view the videotape even if I still had it.
Fisting and urination sequences were largely edited out of VHS prints by the mid-1980's. Famous examples include Taxi Girls and Barbara Broadcast . Most violent, forced-sex, fantasy rape, hard bondage, incest, and underage theme sequences were generally not removed from VHS prints until around 1990 or so--at least in those cases where the title was still available (many original VHS companies went out of business between 1984 and 1990, and their catalogues went into limbo). The editing of classic porn has been a long continuous process of censorship, as more and more "obscene" material is removed from each film with each new edition. VCA, who holds the largest collection of classic titles, has been the one of the worst offenders in this regard.
Is this process of self censorship also in force in Europe ? Some classic , or at least older , films have been released on French DVDs by companies like Colmax and Blue One . Are these features free of the dreaded censor's snip , or are they taken from the same source material as their American counterparts ? Some titles that have been released ; Pretty Peaches 1 ,2 ,& 3 , Devil in Miss Jones 3 , & 4 , and Taboo 5 .
Are any of the video x pix titles censored? Like Bel Ami, Wanda Whips Wall St, Take Off etc? We need a permanent, detailed thread with what has been taken out. That other thread fails to mention that cafe flesh is edited, amongst others. Anyone have a source for the uncut originals?
The only VXP title that has been discussed here that I know about is Maraschino Cherry, which Graybeard has all the details of the cuts in his review. If you look up reviews of the classic titles you are interested in, many reviewers list cuts when they know they are there.
I *ADORE* Juliet Anderson! not a day goes by that i dont quote her from TABOO & TABOOII!
She is a comic GENIUS!
"this leg needs some attention!" "WHAT A BABY!" "a new toolkit; how original." "so i miss a few orgasms." "i have a girl in the next room with the sweeeeeeeetest little pussy" "i'll have the fish; it'll remind me of evelyn."
ROTFLOL!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I'm going to risk getting yelled at [Tricia is ducking now...] , and mention a 1989 movie.
The Adventures of Buttman was reedited (in a good way) for DVD. We added some things that John was afraid were too rough between Tianna and Jamie Gillis back then, extended an anal scene, and added some other footage too. Cleaned the whole thing up and remastered it.
Somehow I don't think re-editing a feature to add an extended anal scene will draw quite the same amount of outrage. (you know, if there were only a smoking devil winking icon that would have taken up less space...).
Well there are a few exceptions like I recently got my copy of Armand Weston masterpiece Defiance of good with the excellent Jean Jennings and surprisingly it wasn't edited given the content (Hard BDSM with sex and rape). The transfer wasn't very good but since it's the only edition available.....
I know this thread is old, but I just discovered it, so it's new to me. :) I just picked up DEVIL IN MISS JONES PART 2 and the disc seems to be cut during the Anna Ventura-George Payne toys & kink scene. The only reason I noticed is because it cuts from the scene of the two examining Ventura's "wares" to the tail end of a sentence spoken by Jack Wrangler (as the Devil watching the Ventura-Payne scene on a screen). I assume there was some kinky stuff here, like a massive dildo or something?
M.B. is right on the money about companies just using old video transfers, and often these are cut. But sometimes companies re-edit those video transfers (PAMELA MANN, for example) anyway. Also, who says prints/original elements still exist for these films? Many companies ditched negatives and film prints, instead believing the video age rendered film meaningless. Many films exist only on 1" tape masters, and sometimes only their edited versions.
Funny that companies will release videos with unauthorized soundtracks (Pino Donaggio's themes for CARRIE appear throughout NuTech's HONEY THROAT DVD, Caballero's AFTERNOON DELIGHTS features an unauthorized cover of the Starlight Vocal Band song), but when it comes to possibly offensive scenes which won't get them into trouble, those are sliced right out.
I'm really hoping the original negatives of Devil In Miss Jones Part 2 still exist and one day we might see a properly restored version of the film. It's one of my all-time favourites and deserves the full special edition treatment.I think Pino Donaggio's theme from Carrie also played over the opening titles of Pandora's Mirror (another Golden Age favourite of mine).
not to be negative, but Saki probably has all of these films in their uncut and complete state anyway why isn't he sharing
seriously though, if there is one thing I can't stand it is artistic censorship. aren't there is a myth that we're past all that in the good ole U.S., but everyone who has posted here or read this thread knows better.
I too think this is just plain wrong. If somebody has the money and balls I bet you can win this in court as long as you can prove "artistic intent". For example Radley Metzger's (Henry Paris) titles have been chopped of complete scenes. His porn movies have more artistic merit then movies like ROAD TRIP or SCARY MOVIE. So why is an artistic work being edited? Well nobody has the balls/money to fight.
Most classics have merit so they should be left alone, period.
Another reason for the editing some classics nowadays, with regards to our releases for example - are that our distributors are under heavier fire (government) than before. Even though most of out films were shot in the '70's, it takes only one instance to level the whole line...
