I used to stay away from German editions of American porn flicks, particularly when the original is longer than 90/100 minutes, because they had the bad routine of cutting them in order to fit in the lenght of the empty tapes they had in stock.

Recently this does not happen that much, anymore. But ...
Since the Italian Evil Angel distributor decided to drop Cristoph Clark's titles - for whatever reason - the works of the French veteran are quite difficult to find around here. So, when a few days ago I saw the boxcover of "Euro Hardball 20: DP Mania" in one of my favourite video shops, I decided to rent it, altough it was by a German distributor named Paradise Film or something like that.
Excellent camera work, great looking girls, nasty sex in nasty situation: all the good thing that one has learned to expect from CC since he started working for the Evil Empire. But something was wrong. One scene (Katy's) was missing and the tape lenght was just under 2 hours.
When I came back to that shop, I saw that there were many other Evil Angel titles printed by that distributor, mainly Joey Silvera's and Jules Jordan's works and that all of them listed on the back cover a running time of 105/120 minutes instead of the regular 135/140. This meant obviously that all those tapes lacked at least in one scene. On the other hand, the pictures and the performers names on the cover were complete, including the ones of the missing scene.

Now I wonder whether the directors/producers of those tapes and the people who take care of PR at EA (Tricia?) know about this scum against their image.
Nowadays in Europe, with no borderlines and the same currency everywhere, it is easy that tapes printed in Germany get traded in Italy, Holland, Spain or wherever else.
This means that people of all Europe may buy/rent one cut, incomplete tape after having read/heard of its complete version, or maybe just after having seen on the back pictures a scene that then is not on the tape. They will probably get angry because of it and start mistrusting the Evil Angel brand, damaging thus the home brand and its other loyal local distributors (like the Italian Blue Movie who is doing a good job trading DVDs of Buttman, Silvera and JJordan that are perfectly equeal to the originals, bonus features included).

I thought I could do a good job talking about this problem on this forum, because I always felt that the Evil Empire wants to have its top level image perceived as such at world wide level.

I haven't purchased or rented German editions of US titles for over a year now. I think most of these editions are totally bad crap.

Terrible picture quality due to a cheap transfer from NTSC to PAL (don't know why this is necessary since almost every DVD-Player can play both standards), cutting off entire scenes, German dubbing sound instead of the original audio and underlaying the whole movie with music although there is no music in the original. This are only examples what German studios are doing with US titles. Therefore you should always buy the original title from the US studios.

Hi,

Welcome to the club :) ... you guys have observed very well. I too had my experiences with those "german companies". Like i wrote in another thread ... i guess the studio who licenses their material to other countries either does not make it 100% clear that the movie has to be in "one piece" or the foreign country companies simply don´t give a damn. All they wanna make is p-r-o-f-i-t.

They don´t even know how stupid they are ... cause not every porn consumer is as dumb as they think (even though enough consumers abviously don´t know shit about what they are renting ... they just wanna see people fuck) they are.

Once you (the customer) recognize you have been renting a fraud tape i wouldn´t rent /buy anything from that company ever again. Too often american movies are being released onto ...let´s say ... 2nd rate companies that most people don´t even recognize. For years i had been trying to find tapes of seymore butts. Nothing ... when i finally had all the originals i found a couple here and there from a company i had never heard of ... not to mention without og covers. Can´t say anything about the "quallity" though

So, renting US porn in germany is (and probably will ever be) a major drag. But i guess that applies to porn from every other country as well

That's it exactly. As long as dumb porn consumers buy this shit, they will make their money. And if I see what bad movies people rent in my local video store then I assume that this will never change.

Most of the porn consumer here in Geramny are more than happy if people fuck on screen. That's all they wanna see. No more wishes, they are simply unpretentious.

Although there are (as always) a few exceptions to the rule, most home-grown German porn is utter crap, with piss-poor, amateurish production quality and average-looking women getting fucked by very ugly men.

Compared to this home-grown fare, the imported US movies are a cut above - even if they have one scene missing, annoying German dialog overdubbed and with transfer quality that leaves a lot to be desired. Many average German porn consumers though seem to be simply unaware that with a few deft clicks on their mouse button, the complete unabridged version of any (for example) EA / JJ / CC movie could be theirs, and as long as this state of affairs continues, I fear that these sub-standard rehashes will have a market here.

Having said that though, compared to the US, Germany is a paradise for those who are into the more bizarre stuff like fisting and "golden showers" (although I don't include myself in that camp). The laws restricting that kind of material are a lot more relaxed here than they are across the water.

A while ago there was this dutch company called Hafbo and they released all the Buttman movies but their tapes were only 2 hours long while all Buttman movies where 2 hours and 20 minutes long so Hafbo decided to cut a scene in every Buttman movie until they decided to start using longer tapes. For example: The Sunny McKay scene has been removed from Buttman's European Vacation from the Dutch version and the same goes for the Angela Summers scene from Wild Goose Chase.

I only buy the original versions now, meaning I also don't buy Shiva versions of movies anymore because they don't include the extras.

Evil Angel is a US company producing porn primarily for the US market. They make extra money by having licensing deals with a whole bunch of European companies. At the same time Evil Angel prefers to distance themselves from these Euro releases and they accept no responsibility for the quality of such products. That is not very satisfactory.

There's not a lot I can say right now except for a couple of small things:

Ask me this question again in January.
Buy or rent what you are comfortable with.

I'm pretty sure that you have rented the German version of "Two in the Seat #3", distributed by Magma. The original RLD movie has good picture quality. Probably Magma had made a bad transfer from NTSC to PAL or the video source was a VHS tape.

German companies seems to think that the dumb porn consumer is satisfied if he can look how people fuck and give a shit about good quality. Fortunately with the Internet the times had changed and we are not longer dependent on them. Look that you always buy or rent the original version to be sure to have the best A/V quality.

Here is my answer copied from that other thread:
OK, I've confirmed that our sales manager has discussed this thoroughly with our European distributors, and he's told me it's fine to pre-release this news: we'll be exclusively selling US-made DVD pieces of 2004 and later Evil Angel titles into Europe.

There will be exceptions to this because, among other reasons, there are a couple of European countries where porn movies often have to be re-edited to pass a release board's approval. This includes the UK due to their classification board.

We believed that many of the dissatisfaction of the DVDs of some European distributors had much to deal with the fact that each country/territory has a much smaller market than Europe as a whole, and therefore the DVD manufacturer for that country had to be more budget-conscious.

As we sell the US-version DVD pieces into Europe, we will continue to do business with our current distributors. The thing that will change is that instead of making their own DVD for their own country, they will be distributing the American-made DVD.

This will take effect with our titles starting with our January 2004 releases. Nothing will change for the movies which were released before that.

@camaban: yeah, it was the german edition, and it was awful... as you wrote, german porn is not as good as american porn by far, guess that's why such hotties like katja kassin and renee pornero have gone to the usa to make movies :-) seriously, if i could choose between getting one gangbang girl movie or 20 german porn tapes for free, i'd sure choose the gangbang girl flick :-)) oh god, i'll have to get my filthy little hands on some of those soon :-))

I wonder how this is going to affect the American versions of EA DVDs in the future ? After all , there are many different languages over here in Europe , will EA be catering to this side of DVD production ? Or will the language option be limited to English as is now the case ? If I remember correctly , some of the local versions of EA discs were dubbed into Dutch or German , which would seem to be quite useful when selling in those markets .

Lee - on the face of it that may appear a reasonable assumption.

But whenever a movie is dubbed into any language other than its original (and this applies to porn as well as to mainstream), it inevitably "loses something" - if you've ever seen something like an American "gangsta rapper" movie with the likes of Ice T or Dog Doggy Dogg or whatever his name is dubbed into German, you'll know exactly what I mean. It just doesn't work.

Not only that, many Germans (and indeed other assorted mainland Europeans) I know often even PREFER to see the English-language originals rather than sit through 2 hours of awful German dubbing - which by the way on the porn side all seems to be done by the same two people!! And let's face it - none of us really buys or rents porn to listen to the dialogue do we??

My own personal (and very humble) opinion is that EA should market English-language product over here.

I'm right in line with both of you on this issue , I only wonder what the more general ( and perhaps more casual ) porn buying public will make of discs where they can't understand a word being said . For my own taste I always prefer to have the original language , whether in mainstream or porn discs . It's pretty useful to have some subtitle options on discs not made in my native language , but few people I know actually bother to watch films if they have to read subs at the same time . Pure laziness I suppose . After all , there must be some people who enjoy dub tracks , otherwise all the mainstream studios wouldn't bother making them and save their money .

PS : I'm a sick little pup and tend to watch as many features as gonzos , so the dialogue is often very useful to me . I've recently been watching some Italian features which were made with Czech and Hungarian talent and then finally dubbed for distribution in German - as you can imagine , it's pretty damned fun to listen to ! The sex is often far more interesting if I can become immersed in the whole situation rather than simply watch some positions . Still , that's just me ...

It makes sense in feature films to do dubbing, but only during the dialogue, not during the sex scenes. In gonzo movies it isn't necessary. If a studio think that the customer maybe needs translation then they should put some subtitles on the disc.

There is no tradition whatsoever of dubbing in Dutch, except for animation and children's films. Even then, it is usually the case that both the dubbed and the original version are released.
So, Dutch labels = orginal language versions with subtitles (or even without subtitles).

I agree with you for mainstream features.
But not for gonzo.
And for feature movies, we will most likely dub and/or subtitle in 2, 3 or 4 different languages. For dialogue only, if we can help it.

His rap name used to be Snoop Doggy Dog, and now it's Snoop Dog, though his real name is Calvin Broadus (doesn't sound so gangsta-ish). Since he's from Los Angeles, naturally he's one of those rappers who's made a porn film.

I can't imagine how comical it would be to see his music videos dubbed into German, unless they have native urban rappers in Germany, too.
