Starting with Flesh Hunter #4 we will be including a translucent "watermark" on the lower right hand corner of the screen. This is in an effort to thwart internet pirates who have continually pirated my dvds onto the internet this is not for "shameless" self promotion. The problem is now overwhelming and something must be done, so if the pirates still rip my dvds onto the internet there is an identifying mark that will say julesjordan.com. This is the last measure i would want to take but for now it is necessary, we would like your opinions on this after you see the finished product.
thanks,
jules

Frankly, watermarks sucks.

But piracy sucks even more, so I guess it´s your right to protect your movies.

No problem Jules. Thanks for the words up and I will look forward to seeing the latest offering from one of porns better directors. It was so cool just listening to you and Erik talking at the party. For once I can say I was a fly on the wall when something cool was discussed!!!!

Well it will probably cause all kinds of havoc with people's dvd players and the customers who are happy to pay full whack for the official product will be the ones who suffer.
Seems kinda drastic & theres always someway of getting round piracy protection anyway.

Tell ya the truth, the only thing that´s going to change is that future pirated JJ DVDs will come with watermarks. Some guys will even CROP the watermarks.

Jules, I'm not trying to be flippant or disrespectful, but I don't understand the rationale for including a watermark. You wrote:
But if the movie is copyright-protected in the first place, what's the point in having a watermark? Couldn't you just as easily go after a pirate legally with or without a watermark? (You certainly don't need a watermark to prove that the movie is yours.) And if the rationale for having a watermark is simply to discourage pirates, I don't see how a watermark would discourage them any more than the movie being copyright-protected would.

I guess I don't understand your rationale, Jules. From a consumer standpoint, however, I don't think I would find a watermark overly distracting. I think it would be better not to have it, but the presence of one wouldn't stop me from buying a movie I really wanted. But if my desire for a movie wasn't sufficiently strong, a watermark might, however subtly, be a factor in my deciding not to purchase it.

its not about pirating dvd's its about putting my content ON the internet, there are whole sites with tons of my content, mostly screen captures and mpegs. I dont believe internet pirates will want to take the time to "crop". people like blacksonblondes.com made millions on my content, anabolic, rld etc. i'm sick of it...

Exactly.

This is a bit too drastic, and not an approach I would take. Though, as you, Jules, say, this is definitely a problem, with some fuckers out there.

Seeing a watermark throughout will be disappointing, especially to the honest paying fans. But those fuckers who brought this on will find a way to fuck up every great thing.

What you mean this watermark will be visable to those who brought the original dvd ?.
Fuck that for a laugh !, why not just use standard macrovision like mainstream dvd's have ?.

I was going to say the same thing. Is the point of the watermark to at least get some exposure for your site if people are viewing it free? Either way it doesn't stop the movie from being pirated and I doubt anyone pirating the movie would care all that much about the watermark.

There's ways around everything.

But this isn't an issue of DVD piracy, it's some fucker who takes the DVD and puts images from it up on the internet without any acknowledgement as to where it came from, usually for profit to themselves and not the copyright holder. So many topics on this forum come from people who see these fuckers sites, see a good looking girl, then ask what film that came from? Well, if those fuckers would tell that said scene came from a certain DVD, get permission to post screen grabs, then that would eliminate many posts on these forum.

Then why don´t you SUE some of those millions out of those pirate fellas?

ok, let me try to explain this further. IF pirates decide to rip my dvds even when the watermark is on it, they will be essentially be promoting my website and movies. Have you ever seen people post: "who is this girl", "what movie is this from" with a link attached, these questions often refer to pirated material on websites and they are either legitimately to id something or a marketing ploy drawing someone to their site. A good example of a site ripping me off is www.addictionvids.com. Dont call it distracting until you see it, i will try to provide you guys with screen captures soon...

Depends on the watermark. If it´s the one brazilian MTV is using, with a animated DRIPPING logo, it´s fucking distracting.

If it´s something WRITTEN, it will ALWAYS be distracting, no matter what. That´s plain psychology. But...

If it´s a symbol, like an stilyzed JJ, then it gets absorbed by the mind and forgotten in, say, ten minutes.

But if you put a logo on Gauge´s bungholio, we´re going to tear your asshole a new asshole!

cos' macrovision is as easy to get around as any other piracy protection. you can pick up players that don't have macro for £50 and cables that remove it for less.

stopping piracy is like pissing in the wind, you'll always get splash back

i don't know why companies bother with anti-piracy software, you WILL NEVER stop piracy. the only way to stop people buying pirates is to make the official discs cheaper, that goes for porn aswell as mainstream, especialy mainstream.

That´s true. I have a chipped, region-free, macrovision off player, and I could copy even the most over-protected Disney titles - if I wanted to, of course.

Copying DVDs to VHS is pretty much like going out with Gauge and spend the entire night wanking off to a naked pic of Aybesea.

Planet, you have a very short memory. In Jules's original post he said:
Let's be cool and wait until Jules actually shows us exactly how the watermark will appear (i.e., how small it is, how translucent it is, etc.).
That's what I don't understand, Jules, if you know who a particular pirate is and that they've been stealing your content, can't you sue? Or do you find that that would be too much of a headache (time-consuming, expensive, a hassle, etc.)?

I can understand the rationale and Jules' films have been one of the most popular targets for piracy on the Internet, but I'm not at all keen on the idea of buying a watermarked DVD. I would feel as if I was being punished for other people's actions.

I don't think the net effect of watermarking would be positive. It will probably hurt sales but for what benefit? Pirates are going to continue pirating and the downloaders are no more likely to buy the DVDs than they were before. In fact, having seen the watermarking themselves they may be less inclined to buy the DVDs.

There are a lot of other issues to be considered and discussed, but ultimately I think watermarking is a counter-productive idea. I would like to see the test watermark before stating anything absolutely, but I can't imagine a good watermark at all.

It's a no-win situation. I don't think I should be punished for legally buying a DVD and I certainly don't think Jules should be punished for turning out fantastic product. All I can say is I'm against watermarking and it would probably hurt my decision to buy JJ DVDs in future.

Hey, If they can put your stuff on their website, they can put their watermarks on top of yours. I don't think you can put an end to piracy.

You can look at it this way, If you're the most pirated porn director out there, that means YOU ARE THE BEST porn director out there (wich I think you are !)

Keep up the good work Jules, I will buy your dvds with or without watermarks, you have my support !

Unfortunately, the smaller and more translucent it is, then the less effective it would be for it's intended purpose (to be clearly seen on Internet copies of the DVD).

I think that this will tend to look a lot like the "bugs" that most television stations are currently using to "brand" their broadcasts.

Although I understand the reasoning behind this decision, I don't like it. I don't like these logos on TV shows, but I haven't bought those TV shows. I definitely don't like the idea of a logo on a product that I legally purchased because the holder of the copyright wants to advertise his website when other people illegally violate that copyright.

IMO, this is a situation where the innocent are being punished because of potential actions of the guilty.

I'm interested in seeing if this is just a Jules Jordan thing...I mean, what about John Leslie, Buttman, Rocco, and Joey Silvera? Will other Evil Angel films come with that same "water-mark"? If not, someone's gonna look really bad.
Jules is a fantastic director, I've purchased five of his titles on DVD- for "full price", brand new and factory sealed- the last four without reading any reviews or any advanced viewing. Looking at the boxcovers alone, I'm very much looking forward to his latest two offerings- Trained Teens 2, and Flesh Hunter 4. With all the run-of-the-mill cookie-cutter crap out there in the adult film-making industry, his films are a breath of fresh air. Needless to say, I trust and appreciate his work.
But the water-marking is a bad call. No matter how translucent it is, it will still be on the "FINISHED PRODUCT"- it will be there and visible every time you view it, be it a month from now or seven years from now. Have you ever watched your favorite mainstream movie (be it Casablanca or Dumb and Dumber) on regular tv or cable only to have that network logo, however small or translucent, keep creeping into consciousness!? It ruins the film, and the experience of watching it.
I must say that I'm with the majority of everyone else on this thread concerning their views over the internet piracy issue, and it pisses me off that more can't be done to PREVENT it- but moves like this one seem borne of concession.

Metro used to watermark their videos. I don't know to what extent they still do today.

As an occassionally downloader of free pix, I know that I have very often gone to the site that was watermarked on the pic.

I've seen this sort of thing before. The last DVD I saw from Oh Man! Studios had a watermark in the lowerright hand corner that faded in and out every five mintues or so. At first, it bothered the hell out of me, but by the end of the movie, I didn't even notice it.

As long as the movie is shot with it in mind (making sure that no important action is happening right there) I don't think it's that big of a deal.

First of all, Planet Sex that was hilarious. But on topic, as someone stated earlier, if I were running a website that was pirating your junks I'd just put my watermark on top. Also, there is software (albeit somewhat crude) that actually will remove a watermark by interpolating the data around it, so that could be another way to remove it. Just a suggestion, but in some other companies stuff I've seen all the people wearing clothes that has the company logo on it. I always thought it cheesy, but this may accomplish your goal of letting people know where it comes from, without alienating the legit viewers. I have seen a few vivid titles with watermarking, and I thought it to be really crappy. Another suggestion would be to have the logo at least be intermittent, not constant, maybe that would be less obtrusive. Oh well just my thoughts.

I'm glad to see that Jules isn't willing to sit back and get ripped off.

A visible watermark will hopefully make it easier for Jules to get the pirate's upstream service providers to shut them off via a DMCA action. These kinds of sites chew up a shitload of bandwidth, bandwidth that is not easily replaced when their providers pull the plug.

Max Hardcore's latest DVD's feature a similar watermark stating "www.maxhardcore.com" in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, but I think Max is more interested in promoting his website rather than piracy issues. Whatever the case, I'll support any changes Jules Jordan does regarding his awesome work and I'll continue to buy any and all titles he releases simply because he's the best.

look guys, i quality checked this, it is small, do u really think i would put something real distracting on my dvds? its barely noticeable if u ask me. They can crop out the logo on still video captures but not on mpeg videos, I believe the people doing this are just hacks doing it quickly, so i think if theyre going to steal it they dont give a shit either way. this stuff is also traded hugely on kaaza and other trading sites as well. It is more of an identification thing than a promotion. Every website you join has watermarked mpegs on them, they have never bothered me. since when have you not looked at a picture on the internet because it had a watermark or logo on it? or how often have you turned off the news because there is a logo on the screen? If these people are gonna use me for content, i'm gonna use them for promotion. This is the last thing i wanted to do but piracy is really overwhelming and its impossible to go after these people.
heres a nice little site filled with Red Light District content, theres about 20 other sites packed with theyre stuff as well: http://www.playthingz.net/
or how bout this one: http://creampie.adultbouncer.com/bonus.html

I'm interested to see what the logo will look like but I really can't imagine a textual watermark that isn't distracting.

Ultimately, it is of course Jules' choice. I'm not comfortable with opposing an artist's assertion of ownership and I'll just end by saying that whether or not the watermark goes ahead, I hope consumer rights and respect for the consumer factor heavily into the consideration.

There are alternative ways to combat piracy and I believe they should be tried before any method that impacts legal consumers.

The company GGG put their logo on the bottom right of the screen. I actually don't find that too bad. Now if their stuff was aired on UK sattelite, then you would have three logos.

GGG bottom tight.
Sattelite company top left
Then the Interactive sattelite feature button active top right.

Now that would be disturbing, but then to have those films broadcast on UK pay sattelite one might see pigs fly.

I wish we could choose on the DVD on which side the watermark should be displayed. I would choose on the top right corner because I'm afraid it might block some action if it's on the lower right corner but of course I can't say anything for sure until I see the watermark.

Of course I understand why measures like these are being taken, I just hope it helps. I hate these fucking pirates, they ruin it for everybody.

This is not going to sit well with a lot of Evil Angel's loyal customers.
Just look at Red Light District's on screen menu fiasco and how they lost sales and had irate customers complaining about it, they decided to remove it from future dvd's. Or Private's watermark too, people complained and that's now gone as well. Same with Vivid, they had a logo informing the viewer when a multiple angle was available, that's gone now too. The only possible way I can see this working is if the logo is like the ABC network's is. A very light grey in color that's transparent and that you can't notice after a few seconds of viewing. But I've got a feeling the one we will see on JJ's stuff will be bright and probably be intrusive to the viewer experience.
The last thing I want to see when I'm watching a porn is some logo on the screen, any logo. If it's there I won't be buying it, period.
Is this watermark also going to be included on vhs versions of the movies, because if it isn't what would stop someone from putting that version of the movie on the net.
This is not going to work and will only alienate those that are fans of Jules movies and pay money to buy the dvd's. If there's a logo on the screen from now on, I will find somewhere else to spend my money.
Just my 2 cents.

Jules, I don't think watermarks ultimately are going to be a big problem. I can understand your position, and I think, as viewers, we are used to seeing them. They're on the networks. Some of more bothersome than others, especially ones with bright bold colors, but ones with see-through graphics, like those at NBC, ABC and the rest are not the least bit bothersome.

They only serve to remind you that NYPD Blue is on ABC. I see no problem, especially given your legitimate piracy concerns, to let folks know they are watching a Jules Jordan production.

Jules, I rent one of your VHS tapes and after hearing great things about your DVD, decided to order your DVD.

Have you thought of legal action against those companies or P2P Users that pirate your Videos? I know it is costly but Anabolic recently stop a DVD Duplication plant for stop make illegal copies of it DVDs.

Also, have about having your DVD/Video for Sales only and not Rental? To prevent someone from rent your excellent DVD and then making an illegal copy and then sharing it with the world or create a website.

On most Rear Projected Television and new RP HDTV have burn in issue.

So if someone was to have a Jules Jordan DVD marathon with his new Watermarks, after a while it could damage a Rear Projected Television.

Granted it would take a while for it to cause a Burn-in effect.

That is why my HDTV-NonHDTV Rear Projected Televsion viewers did not watch any CNN channels or channels with a watermark or a ticker.

A clear watermark is okay better then a solid color logo.
You should pick a corner of the screen to place your watermark that is not near any action.

BTW the most TVs have a 7-10% Overscan where Computer Monitor do have any other scan.

BTW, Jules have you thought about making any of your DVDs in the 16:9 ratio (widescreen)

Have Evil Angel thought about using 5.1 Audio for your Video Shoots?

5.1 for PORN? What for? It´s not as if there are choppers flying by or something like that.

I once saw a porn mixed in DD Surround, with the moans of the girl in front and the grunts of the guy in the BACK speakers. Horrid.

once again, this is the smallest watermark you could imagine, hopefully later today i can provide you guys with a screen capture. Trust me, the bottom right is the best place for it, hardly anything ever happens in this corner. Luckily me and my camera people are good enought that it wont be interfering with a penetration shot there :). seriously though, please read through all comments on this topic before bashing it, it is a CLEAR, TRANSLUCENT WATERMARK, NO COLOR, NOT A MENU just julesjordan.com in a small font.
You guys are too quick to say, "i'm not gonna buy anything with a watermark on it" you watch shows with watermarks on them all day, and probably dont realize it. I thought of every possible thing it would "block" and i couldnt come up with anything

Jules, since you gave us hours and hours and hours (and hours) of endless masturbation moments, you sure deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Plus, we all know that you´re not stupid and you would never put a logo over Gauge´s arseholio. That would be un-american.

So, post the screengrabs so we can see it and THEN bash you!... No, just kidding!

Depends on the flashing. If it´s something Pokemón-like, I would feel kinda dizzy.

But hey, how about subliminary messages instead of the watermark?

At regular intervals, you could put some frames of Belladonna´s bodacious butt with "Julesjordan.com" written in bold letters on each cheek. THAT would be cool!

As long as you don't make it flash in the same color all the time, I'm cool with that. The same color would just be boring.

But seriously, you've gotta do what you've gotta do. The only thing that's really sad is that people are immediately jumping on the idea without seeing it after how much care you've shown to all your movies. Do I like the idea? Not really, but from what I've seen you put a lot of care into most everything and listen to the people who watch your movies. There isn't much you can do with piracy that's feasable money-wise, so this seems like a practical move.

OK. Here's a screencap of the DVD picture with the watermark. As you can see, it's a 60% opacity grayish-color type font that says julesjordan.com in the lower right corner of the screen.

Ah. Now we can give our opinions.

First impression: I didn´t liked it as it is, but then it´s just a still image. Maybe with the moving picture (and Belladonna´s ass) we can forget the presence of the watermark.

But the good thing is that it can be easily fixed by pushing it more to the corner, and maybe lowering it a lil´ bit more. Transparency is good.

IMHO, a more compressed type font would be nicer. I´ve read somethere that the perfect watermark takes only 1/8 of the screen, but I´m not into tech stuff.

Wow, after seeing that, I don't see how anyone can complain. That is about the least obtrusive watemark possible. In fact I can barely read it, it is so light. On another note, thanks Jules for telling us about it before we bought it, it shows a lot of love for your fans that you would tell us about this rather than just put it in and hope we don't mind.
