A few of you have read my useless statistics post on the gay forum where I tabulated data on all the gay-related DVDs currently available along with minimum, median, average & maximum prices through the various online retailers associated with this site. Well, tonight I tried compiling a few statistics on str8 DVDs and I'm amazed at the differences. Unfortunately, it isn't easy to gather all the data so I had to make do with what I considered a reasonable sample (prices on 2,500 DVDs); however, based on spot-checking my figures against non-sampled data (another 1,000 DVDs), I can't be too far off the mark. Essentially, all gay-oriented titles average a full 60% higher price over straight-oriented titles across the board. Even given the smaller market, I can't believe this differential is justified. On Laserdisc, there was only one company who was willing to replicate Adult Laserdiscs. Because they were the only game in town, they demanded a premium price. An adult Laserdisc was about $70. Is a gay movie more expensive to make than a straight movie? In straight movies the girls get paid a lot more than the guys do. However, I have heard that the guys in gay movies get paid more than the girls in straight movies do. If this is true, then the talent cost of a gay movie must be much more than a straight movie because EVERYONE would be getting the higher rate. No matter what the answer is, I agree with you, the price of gay movies shouldn't be any higher than straight movies. However, if the way that this would be solved is by raising the price of straight titles rather than lowering the price of gay titles, they you lose my support [Link] |

Only recently has there been an influx of new gay DVD releases. There's also a history of gay titles costing more on VHS. | GaySatyr Senior Member Half dirty ol' man; half horny ol' goat! 1684 Posts 10/00 | Posted - Jun 30 2001 : 3:13PM For data on the gay titles, I used Super Search, marking a few studios at a time, searching every single studio on the list for gay-related titles (sometimes altering the number of studios to make sure I never hit the 200 title limit). Then I blocked the data, a page at a time, capturing title, (review), price, studio & category. I then fed this data to QuattroPro (similar to Microsoft Excel) and crunched numbers. Because of the enormous number of straight titles, I decided to "sample." I literally cast a die (you know, those cute little six-sided blocks with the dots on them) and used the resulting roll to pick & choose studios. The first roll was a "3" so I began with the third studio on the list, I then skipped studios based on subsequent rolls of the die, a "1" meaning that I'd skip over 1 studio, using the second, and a "6" meaning that I'd skip over 6 studios, using the seventh. I marked every catedory on the list except "gay." I used the same technique as for gay titles to capture the data and feed it to QuattroPro. As a test of the accuracy of my sampling technique, I went through the entire process with the straight titles a second time, using two dice, skipping a comeasurately larger number of studios and using the very next studio on the list whenever I happened to fall on one I had used before. My "sample" technique resulted in 2,673 titles. My accuracy check resulted in 1,082 titles. Minimum data were within 1 penny (3.99 vs 4.00); maximums were identical and the more meaningful average and median data were within 1 and 2 cents, respectively. Here are my results (rounded to the nearest quarter): Cat: ... - Str8 - .. - Gay - .. - PC - The differences are substantial. All I've really proved here is that the differences are too significant to be circumstantial. Most probably (conjecture on my part), there are three major reasons: 1) a more limited market with relatively fixed, per-title, start-up production costs (probably the greatest factor); 2) social and legal taboos limiting distribution to a certain extent; and 3) because they can easily get away with it (not discrimination against gays, per se; just discrimination against a minority market group). (I know this to be accurate as I am good friends with one of his "stars" and know several others.) However, Kristen's videos are unusual in that he spends as much time shooting a single scene as most Cali studios spend shooting an entire video. And, unlike the Cali studios, Kristen seldom produces more than two videos a year. I can understand why his videos are expensive. Some time ago, there was a discussion of production costs on the forum on the kristenbjorn.com web site. Kristen stated that his productions usually cost between $85,000 and $100,000 each. (This was cost of creating product, not duplication, advertising & distribution, which should probably be essentially identical for any of the studios.) At that time, the number floated for many of the Cali studios was about $25,000 per video to get it "in the can." I cannot verify the accuracy of any of those numbers. Nor do I have any data to compare numbers - salaries or production costs - in the "straight" porn video world. ~ GaySatyr [Link] |
