This topic was prompted by a thought-provoking comment that Smartblonde made in another thread (called "Too Much Anal Sex?"). Smartblonde was addressing the issue of the increasing prevalence of anal sex in porn and she made a comment that the growing popularity of anal sex was even affecting her in real life:Is it that porn has made guys obsessed with anal sex, or is it that guys have made porn obsessed with anal sex. Trends in porn are driven by demand (dollars). It's what porn fans collectively want the most that we naturally see the most of in porn.
So the real question becomes:
Why are so many men drawn to anal in the first place?
I'll give you my reasons and then you tell me on which points you agree or disagree:
1. It's still considered a taboo in real life. Hence, the "naughtiness" of it heightens sexual desire. (Remember, even oral sex was once considered sodomy--and in some states, legally, this might still be true.)
2. Anal deprivation increases anal desire. Since it seems that most women in real life don't like anal, their boyfriends or husbands become frustrated with either not being able to have anal sex as often as they would like to or not having anal sex at all. Hence, men gradually become more preoccupied with anal as a result of varying degrees of deprivation.
3. The need for variety. Even the best vaginal sex can eventually become routine and perfunctory for some men. They see occasionally having anal sex as a way to spice up their sex life.
4. Pardon the crudeness, but the tighter fit creates more friction, which in turn, can create more intense orgasms.
Two quick points:
Point # 1: Consider that Smartblonde's observation about men not being concerned (or concerned enough) about female pleasure has always been true, whether anal sex comes into play or not. I guess she meant that the apparent anal obsession has made that problem even worse.
Point # 2: It's good to keep in mind that some men hate anal and some women love it.
I think that the reasons that men watch anal in porn can vary. In some cases, it's because a man is compensating for something that he can't get or get enough of in real life. In other cases, it's merely because a man just finds the anal sex fetish a "turn on" per se (whether he has ready access to it in real life or not).
Not necessarily gay, but by way of fingers/tongues, girl wearing strap-on, or, dare I say, she-male?

It has never appealed to me in my own sex life, but it can be erotic watching a chick on the receiving end.
As I pointed out in LuanaLani's thread, my enjoyment of anal sex on film does not translate into a burning desire for it in real life; and yes, I have done it. In fact, as far as I'm concerned, real sex is all about pleasing my partner - that's what gets me off. Furthermore, real sex is primarily a tactile experience, which makes it very different from porn - a visual and, to a lesser extent, auditory one.
The reasons I enjoy watching anal sex on film are: 1) I think it looks better (OK, I'm weird), and 2) the woman is almost always involved when performing anal, which can't be said for vaginal sex.
I can't speak to why anybody else likes it, whether in porn or real life.

BIGmike, in a sense, that seems to echo Smartblonde's observation. I think demand by anal enthusiasts got the strong anal trend in porn started, and then the trend itself influenced consumers like you who weren't interested in anal initially but subsequently became interested in it through the increased exposure.
I don't care about anal any longer, especially in porn (still like it in real life once in awhile). What I find is that suddenly, when there's an anal, the director suddenly forgets his camera can move and his lens widen. Mr. Pachard, do you know the work of a director called Jackson St. Louis? He did some anal movies in the early 90´s, and even worked with Rex Borsky on movies like ANAL CLIMAX and DEEP CHEEKS.
I have always performed anal when allowed, and I have known women who prefer it. And this was long before porn had any influence on me or them. It just seems like a natural thing to do.

I'm a bit of a purist in the sense that I watch only the anal footage of the movies I rent. This preference only applies to porn, though. Sex with a partner is a completely different experience and nothing beats ORAL if your talking about real sex IMHO.
OK, reasons I prefer anal in porn:
1. More visually explicit--This is so obvious a reason and yet often overlooked. I can see the muscles of the anus slipping up and down the cock. With vaginal sex the muscles are somewhat hidden and I'm somewhat distanced from "feeling" what the male performer is feeling.
2. The acting stops--There's a look of intense concentration women get when a cock is worked into their butt that's incredibly erotic. This is quite common with anal but very rare with vaginal penetration--at least in porn...

4. Porn (hopefully) offers a sanitized version of anal-- Anal sex in real life takes preparation and has its drawbacks. Usually (and preferably) all this is omitted in porn.
