As far as what we see in porn itself: The japanese have some weird stuff going on because of the mosaic. You can't show genitals. but you can show an ass. So there's weird freaky stuff like poo and piss eating.
of course there's a hella lot of bondage.

Like some German stuff I've seen also does this bizzare stuff.
Is it because that's all we want to import from them?

That's an interesting question. Perhaps the distributors feel they have to go with the wierder stuff to attract attention to it and set it apart from the local market.

I don't think its just the distributors. It's also some of us as the consumer. I can't find the thread but some one was talking about German porn and they thought it would be a waste of their time to Review a DVD since it wasn't a GGG type german movie.

Like let's say we're just going to talk about some gonzo movies. Let's say our domestic company makes a good one it's reviewed well and it will cost you about $19.
Let's say a foreign company also makes a good gonzo film and its also reviewed well and it's as good as the domestic one but it'll cost ya $35.
Kinda hard to choose the regular foreign film huh?
What if it where some of the odd genre's we see in the foreign market? German Sperm showers, Japanese Bukkake, Chinese Anal Smoking, or even Swedish Rape fantasy porn? Those are hard to get here and they also cost lets say that $35.
It's weird and not common so let's take a look at least once.
So if our market is only flooded with the weird stuff it'll be hard for us to judge the other porno culture.
Can't really say all Japanese porn is bukkake like or German's love Fisting, scat and sperm showers. Or Chinese girls love smoking cigarettes with their asses.

The price of an American DVD is here twice that in the USA.

Hence a typical anal gonzo DVD (Anabolic / Diabolic / Extreme Associates / Evil Angel) costs about 40 USD. It has to compete with similar European gonzo releases (e.g. Puaka) that cost say 23 USD, and with all the European "special stuff" of say 30-40 USD.

So there is not much of a market for imported US material, and in fact most porn shops (I have asked them several times) even decline to make any effort to order it.

There is some progress though, as European porn companies have bought rights to distribute US material. MMV releases a couple of Rocco, Buttman and Red Light District DVD's. Erovisie has a handful of Extremes Associates. Shiva has Buttman. All at reasonable prices (about 23 USD).

In Sweden (and other Nordic countries) Max's and Bestseller appear to be the biggest/most visible companies, and they distribute lots and lots of repackaged American porn, usually in subtitled form, although there are some domestic releases in their catalogs as well.

Although I do not know any porn consumers personally, my impression is that American porn is actually the biggest seller in my country, judging from the percentages of boxes displayed in pornshops. (Although DBM, GGG and the like are also well represented, but I would guess they would appear only to specialized groups.)

This very liberal attitude in Denmark came about however, because of the absolute repressive and restrictive practices of the majority of Danes who reside outside of the metropolitan areas. Take a boy out of the country who has been taught to deny their sexual self as something bad - put him in the big city, and he tends to go overboard the other way. Couple this with their inbred scizophrenia ( Vikings - WTF was that about?), and I'd say yes, porn IS very cultural. Then again...
