I am open to any suggestions for my first DVD player. Are there any "good" one's that can be had for $150-$175? Should I pay more? Best one for that price range?
What about any players in the $200-$225 price range? Any help would be appreciated as I want to buy my first player in the next week or so.
I'm not sure if the model is still current, but I would recommend the Sony 360. It retails for somewhere around $200-$250. There are several features that make it a better player than most. It can play damaged discs better than a Pioneer player I own (414), it has a much smoother scanning - not jumpy like a lot of players, and the onscreen menus are very easy to use. I actually own the 560, but the 360 it almost identical except for lack of headphone input and built in DD decoder. I don't have any experience with the under $200 players so I don't know what they are like. That's my two cents worth...
I'd second the recommendation for the Sony DVP-S360 player. It's about $200 shipped from most places on the Internet. Anything cheaper than that is suspect, since they tend to be DVD-ROM drives with a hardware decoder board shoved into a home electronics chassis. Your mileage may vary, but I know from first hand experience that adult titles are the ones with the most incompatibilities with budget players, and it's better to pay a bit more for a brand that you rarely hear complaints about.
I recommend the RCA RC5215P. It can be found for about $170-$180--maybe less. It's a good player. It has excellent slow mo (varying speeds) and pause features. the screen layout is also well done. It's also a lot quieter when it plays than a lot of other DVD players!
I also like RCA remotes. The remote this one comes with is lacking but you can order a better one from RCA if you so desire.
It's reasonably priced for the quality and makes an excellent first DVD player purchase.
I have a GE1106P whatever that means. I got it at Wal-Mart for about 129 bucks and it plays all my adult dvds fine, except for two black dvds I got from XRent that just wouldn't play. One was Gangbang Bitches 7 I believe and the other title was Sperm Burpers. Those were the only two and I have rented a lot of dvds from XRent and I own 25 adult dvds and all of them play fine. I wish you luck finding a good player. Anyone know how a Sony Playstation 2 does with adult titles because I am thinking of getting one. Thanks
Go with the Sony S360. I own one and have played over 100 adult discs and countless mainstream titles and have never had a problem. I constantly read here about people with Toshiba players that won't play certain discs. I've never had that problem. It also plays scratched discs without a problem.
I didn't get a Sony because the damn thing made so much noise when it played the DVDs. I could here it reading the disk over the movie's sound. This was on every Sony I previewed except for one that was like $500.
You got that problem with yours?

You have a point. The noise. My Sony 560D makes some noise, but it's drown with my huge speaker theater set up.
Give me sound, over non-playing disc players.
I HIGHLY recommend the Sony..I own the 560D..it's very slim in height about 3 inches and in length about 11 inches. It's awesome. Plays EVERYTHING. That is my baby.
I failed to mention noise in my recommendation for the 360/560 from Sony. I don't hear any at all because of my home theater, but the Pioneer that I moved up to the bedroom is LOUD - on some discs louder than others. Normally it's not a problem...but if you need to listen with the volume turned down and don't have headphones (the 560 has a jack) finding a player that is quiet may be important.

I can't stress the Sony 560D enough. I had the Panasonic 310A..sold it. I had the Toshiba 3109..traded it for the Toshiba 2200..huge mistake! Now I have the Sony 560D which is the da-bomb. My next DVD player is the Sony 9000ES progressive player. But I need a HDTV first. Waiting for a nice 720P capable CRT 56"for a nice juicy price.
i have a philips 711,it does have troubles at times playing the adult title, the remote controll sucks ,the playstation 2 appears to play the adult titles, the only problem, everytime you put a dvd in,if its rated above a certain rating, you have to enter in this parental lock no# to play the movies, that can get old,you also have to buy a remote.
I also have a 560D and indeed, it does play ever adult dvd disc I have ever tried as well as all mainstream titles, however, now I'm starting to question its long term reliability.
I purchased mine last July and last month the unit burned up. I was in the middle of watching Almost Famous and the picture broke up. I couldn't get it to restart. I tried some other discs and discovered it would no longer play any discs at all.
The unit was repaired by a local shop for free (it has a year warranty), but I am disappointed it broke down at all. In reality, I do not think I use it that much. I mostly use it to watch 2 or 3 mainstreams movies a week. The shop replaced the laser pick up when it was serviced.
I am very pleased with the compatibility of this player, but reliability is important as well, especially on a model in the $300 price range.
Just a ? on this tech dvd player thread- my 1st dvd player blew up so i bought a second one for a 139 bucks while my original was being serviced under warranty. I notice the inexpensive one i just purchased will play pal format whereas my more expensive one will not. After looking at some threads from euro members they acknowledge that most all of their dvd players will play both formats ie. ntsc and pal. Why isn't that the case here? seems like it cuts down what we can purchase whereas that is not the case in europe. If a dvd player can play any given format does that imply region coding is obsolete or are those still two separate issues? anybody have insight.. rosco
Here's my buying story. Tired of using my roommates DVD so I went to get my own. Went for the Sony 360 and it was listed at 249 on sale for 199. They had the 560 for 299. Well, I went to buy and when she came from the back she said since it was a close out they were all out. So not to lose a sale she then stated she'd let me have the 560 for the 360 price. I said 249? She said no you can have it for the 199 price. I said woo hoo and sold. I love that damn thing.
