Recently, AVN compiled a list of the 101 greatest adult videos and 16 more which they felt deserved mention but that are currently unavailable (See article & lists in their August '01 issue: The 101 Greatest Adult Tapes Of All Time). They also spoke of a list of 100 greatest gay videos published in their October gay supplement. I've found a number of these videos (in fact, almost all of them) by gleaning the information from several online retailers who have made mention of the list and promoted their inventory accordingly; however, I have been unable to find the list from AVN. Here are the 101 + 16 titles from AVN's list (those available on DVD are so marked - I have tried to match cast lists and production dates to ensure that the version on the link is indeed the version that AVN described on their list - in a very few cases, AVN endorsed the series as well as its "premier" title; however, no blanket endorsement for series exists in the article. I will leave it to others to annotate this list with omissions and with series recommendations.

I'm certainly no porn historian and I've only seen a small percentage of the listed films but overall, I'm pretty happy with that list. More Golden Age and 80's porn epics than I would have expected from AVN. There are a few too many "glitz" porn films listed for my taste but different strokes, as they say. One big quible...why are New Wave Hookers 1 (sans the excised and supposedly extraordinary Traci Lords scene) and NWH 4 on the list and NWH 3 not on it? Or did I miss it? Just my opinion but NWH 4 is good but doesn't even compare to 3 in terms of acting or sexual heat.
I read their article. I gather that these 2 titles were chosen for their infamy and idiosyncrasy, respectively; however, the text did not offer a blanket endorsement of the NWH series.

No, I haven't had any dealings with him, so I can't offer any advice. Tempting stuff, though! I imagine he gets most of his stuff "on consignment" from other collectors, who either have multiple copies of, or who make copies "to order" of their original VHS or 3/4-inch tapes. That said, I don't know what the final quality might be.
You might try doing a search on the forums here, and/or a Google "Group" search (they swallowed up "DejaNews") on "Sureluck" or "Sureluck Holmes" and see what traffic surfaces!

I'm shocked!
I expected to see much more movies with Jenna Jameson. What about movies like: The Wicked One? Dream Quest? Flashpoint? Silver Screen? etc. etc. I understand that not everyone is a fan of Jenna but isn't it strange that Jenna scores that high in the popularity listings but that her movies are hardly mentioned?
Can someone please explain me the criteria the AVN has used here? Is it the number of copies sold?
I don't know their criteria; however, after reading more than 3 dozen of their reviews of gay titles, the criteria is certainly NOT good taste by any definition I can imagine (& I'm not talking about sleaze content, either). They gave 4 and 4-1/2 stars to videos that I would not even consider renting - much less buying. Then they turn around and give 3 stars to something I think is excellent.
I suspect that the studios who do the most advertising and/or wining & dining get preferential treatment.
I think GaySatyr hit it right on the head, no pun there intended,lol. From what I have read on the web at various sites it seems like the more you pay for advertising and how much kiss ass then the better the pub will be for you and your studio,film. So take the list with a grain of salt and if you see some of your favorites then that is cool but I didn't hardly see any I liked as I go more for the Anabolic/Diabolic, Private, and Wicked stuff and I didn't see to much of that so that list didn't mean to much to me. I know that some people and maybe it is a majority I don't know seem to like the 70's and 80's stuff so well and think todays stuff is less and I just think the opposite but then again you can look at it with a sports analogy, you really can't compare eras like the 70's Steelers with the 90's Cowboys just accept that both were dominant teams in the eras and just enjoy both teams excellence. Some thing with porn there was great material in the 70's and 80's and now today there is excellent stroker material, there is something for everyone just about.
In two years since this list was posted, some of the golden age classics are now available. Congratulations to the studios who work hard to bring in the classics (only to those studios who produce good video/audio quality DVDs NuTech for example)
For years there's been good press about Bad Wives. When I finally saw it the sex was sooooo not special. (#20 all time.) Maybe I should have had the volume up higher and paid attention to the story? The list makers must be talking about best all-time production values and plot and quirkiness and notoriety. (All the things we do our best to fast forward past.) The other 12 I've seen were alright.
