The main reasons why I haven't bought anything recently from them are: * Their web site, as information filled as it might be, is SLOW, SLOW, SLOW. * Most useful information (photos, covers, etc.) is accessible by members only. You have to buy something every six months or pay $19.95 every six months to get a membership. Excalibur says that this is to keep casual browsers away and keep the site running fast. I can only imagine what the speed would be if they didn't.  * The web site's design hasn't really changed since they started it (1994?). Hard to browse, slow to load, difficult to find what you're looking for. * They charge sales tax for me since I'm in California and so are they. So by going to other stores, I can save 7-8% off the bat. * I'd prefer to give my money, especially in this industry, to the little guys rather than the gigantic stores. Otherwise, Alan Jackson will be singing, "there goes the little man," for them too. And they have more personal service and better prices than the big stores. As far as Excalibur's exchange program, they mention that DVD exchange is only $1, but they don't have any information about on their web site (the page on the exchange program talks about CD-ROMs and VHS). But if it's like the older programs, you can only exchange for titles on their exchange list, which is fairly small. Also, you end up having to pay for shipping to them in addition to the exchange fee. While it might be good insurance against a crappy disc that you don't like, it's not a good substitute for renting DVDs. Anyway, despite all of that, I wouldn't discourage anyone from buying from them. They've been around forever and are on the level. I received one of the tapes a couple of days later but was missing the other. Turns out the missing tape was "Back Ordered". About a week later, I was so captivated by JR that I decided to order one of her DVDs. Turns out that this item is "Back Ordered" too. I made the first order 1-1 and the second on 1-7. I checked the status today and it hasn't changed. Does this happen a lot to other people with other sites? I never had a problem with DVD Empire or DVD Express with any DVDs. [Link] |

My worst experience was when they refused to honor their price guarantee. After two long distance phone calls and two long-distance faxes of the pages from the catalog of their biggest competitor. The saddest thing is that they literally used to be the best. Seriously! Three years ago I wouldn't have recommended anyone else to buy from. But for the last three years they have apparently spent all their time dressing up their website, and not enough time addressing business. As of two years ago, I gave up on them permanently. Pay the extra one or two bucks a title to get your videos and DVDs from somewhere else. The problems dealing with Excalibur aren't worth the savings. [Link] |
