Maybe someone else would have been htere if she hadn't... BUT she contributed to porn being more popular and more "clean", meaning as the 90s came around the budgets were bigger and the stars were more good looking. I was turned off by much of the 80s porn that I saw when I was a teenager.
Without Jenna J there would have never been a Jenna Haze. At least under that name so I would say she played a pretty big role in porn. Inspiration goes a long way. Hell I know I lost alot of knuckle children because of her. I feel Jenna Haze is making more of a mark in the industry than Jenna J ever did. We know who came first but with out one you wouldn't have the other I suppose. Now I guess the question is "what's in a name"?
There are two paths to greatness: be the first or be the best. Columbus was a lousy geographer.* He was an above-average sailer. He had a murderous lust for gold, and may this very moment be rotting in hell. But Columbus was the first person to travel to America and report his discoveries. The first is rarely the best. Jenna Jameson was the first woman to make porn mainstream. Yes, she rode a wave.** Yes, there are a lot of other women who are ten times hotter than she was. If the New York Times manages to survive, it will write an obituary about her when she dies. Someday, maybe in a hundred years, if books manage to survive, someone will write a biography of her, which will reveal titilating details of her life while putting her and porn in sociological perspective. It will spend, maybe, two weeks on the Times best-seller list, and then the author will disappear into obscurity again.
* Since the age of the Greeks, every educated person in Europe knew the world was round; Eratosthenes measured the circumference, and though there is debate, he may have been correct within 1% of the correct measurement of 25,000 miles. Columbus ignored the measurement, insisting it was only 8000 miles around based on his faulty reading of the bible. ** Columbus rode the trade winds to America. To get from Tahiti to Hawaii, you sail North, first through trades blowing NorthWest, then through the Doldrums, where there is little wind or current, and then through trades blowing SouthWest. Once you get to the right latitude, you turn West, and let the trades carry you to Hawaii. That's the easy part. Tell me the name of the first navigator to do that and then get back to Tahiti to tell others about it, and I'll tell you the name of a GREAT navigator. Alas literacy didn't come to Polynesia until Captain Cook arrived, so this name is lost in time.

Totally agree..I do not see any importance of Jenna Jameson for the industry nowadays. The girl with the same name is by far a bigger star and performer compared the older Jenna.
Jenna meant nothing to porn from my own personal perspective. I'm 25. I grew up watching the "golden" era of porn. From 93-99 The only porn I could view was stuff on VCR, my parents and my friends parents. So I was brought up on 70s-80s smut even though I'm a 90s kid.I watched the Kay Parker/Christy Canyon era. Somehow missed the Jenna Jameson/Janine era. Picked up again in the Aurora Snow/Jenna Haze/Krystal Steal era. I liked the latter era the best. Mostly because those starlets were my age at the time. I preferred Devon and Krystal Steal over JJ. But I do know a lot of people who JJ. Can't argue with that.
Depends on what industry you speak of? There are several subdivisions of the adult industry and Jenna Jameson touched them all. I personally believe that Jenna Jameson set the bar for success. Just my opinion though.Personally I think it was a combination of both. Jenna Jameson is a fantasy widely embraced by both male and female citizens. On the male side she is a hot female who has sex on camera, on the female side she is an intelligent female who has good business sense and used both her brain and her body.People who already bought porn were already porn customers, I do think that a certain amount of people who didn't buy porn became more aware of their own sexuality because of Jenna Jameson. In my opinion Jenna Jameson sparked an interest and helped porn become acceptable to some of those who wouldn't normally watch it. But on the same note those who find porn unacceptable will continue to find porn unacceptable.
All due respect, Jenna Jameson didn't do shit for porn. What she did was use porn as a successful starting point to market herself as a brand name. "Jenna Jameson" made herself the face of porn, without producing a remarkable body of work. By comparison, performers like Ginger Lynn and Nina Hartley contributed far more to the porn biz... both in terms of their output and their support of the industry. Jenna Jameson meant about as much to porn as Will Smith meant to rap music. But no one can deny she's been a successful business woman and made more money off her name than anyone else in adult. Good for her. As far as her or anyone else making porn "mainstream"... the whole notion of porn becoming mainstream would seem absurd if anyone took the time to think about it. No one in the mainstream media calls it "mainstream". The mainstream is only mainstream in relation to porn. To say that porn is becoming more mainstream is essentially the same as saying "porn is becoming less pornographic", which some porn certainly has. Yes, sexual mores have progressed and changed over the years, and will continue to change... for better or worse. And as they do, the boundaries of what we consider pornographic or mainstream entertainment will likewise change. But there will never be a point when there isn't some subculture that's generally considered pornographic, regardless of what the content is. There will always be social taboos, and the need for fantasy, and those things will always be at the root of porn.
^^^ There is a real distinction between porn and other forms of cultural expression which transcends changing cultural mores. To state the obvious, porn stars have sex and film it for all the world to see. Yes, there are cultures in the world where simple nudity would be as shocking as porn is to Americans, and there may be other cultures where you might need to involve feces or animals to get the same shock-value that simple penetration has in America. Still, there is a very clear distinction, either people are having sex on camera or they're not. Some forms of cultural expression depict this, we call this "porn;" some forms of cultural expression don't, we call this "mainstream." Jenna Jameson became very famous outside of the world of porn, as a woman who did porn. No one before or since did this to anything nearly the same degree. In fact, if you go back in history to before the development of film, it's hard to think of an example of a woman who became famous simply for having sex: Cleopatra: She was queen of Egypt. Her sexual exploits were used for propaganda effect by Augustus to discredit her alliance with Mark Anthony. The story we hear isn't really about her sexuality, but is propaganda from 2000 years ago. Mata Hari: She was a spy. The story of her espionage is spiced up by the sexual subplot, but if not for her spying, her story would be totally unremarkable and history would have forgotten her. Mary Magdeline: She was close to Jesus. It's late and I'm tired right now. But I can't think of another woman in all of human history who is famous simply for having had sex. The fame that she garnered from porn gave her opportunities in the mainstream, and I think the E! Network Biography about her was their single most successful show. The Beatles may have been bigger than Jesus in 1965. But in 2000 and on the E! Network, Jenna Jameson was bigger than the Beatles. She is very different than Will Smith. He started as a rapper, and parlayed his success into a second career as a movie star. Jenna Jameson was a porn star, and is now a celebrity for having done porn, and markets her celebrity. She's famous, and quite wealthy simply because she had sex on camera. This is remarkable, and may be unprecidented in human history.
^^^ It's pointless to be argumentative for arguments sake. You understand "to the same degree", right? To take one example, the movie "Deep Throat" is probably far more well known than the actress "Linda Lovelace." If she is famous in her own right, it's more for her "revelations" about the porn industry than for the work she did in it.

Your argument flounders because she is not very famous outside porn. She is not even moderately famous. Lovelace is not famous either, but about 1 hex more recognizable than Jameson.
Really? I know Jenna haze has her share of fans and is fairly popular but in terms of popularity or sexual performances or groundbreaking work, how exactly is Jenna Haze making a bigger mark on the industry than Jenna did or even someone like Sasha Grey or others I could name? Maybe I'm missing something because I never really understood the Jenna Haze appeal... Edited by - draxxx on 3/14/2009 11:33:14 AM
IMO Jenna Jameson is extremely overrated. While I agree she did open some doors that were previously closed to women and helped porn change in some ways, she isn't a monumental figurehead of porn as some like to make it seem. As for the people saying that without Jenna Jameson there would be no Jenna Haze, Sasha Grey, etc, etc... I have to disagree. Girls like Jenna Haze and Sasha Grey have paved their own way in this industry. They have made completely different decisions rather then following Jenna Jamesons career path and look how enormously successful they have become. And they have only been in for half the time or less than she has. They have woven their own thread into the fabric of the Porn Industry and they arent changing their beliefs, morals or decisions for anyone. These girls havent given into the pressures of going contract only(well Jenna did for a sec, but she came right back to a world she fits well in, where she is free to make her own choices, whenever and however she wants), they havent given in to the wave of plastic surgery, and I could go on. The bottom line is Jenna Jameson was good for her time I agree. Not amazing. Just good. But she is not the reason why girls today are as big as they are. These girls have worked their asses off to get where they are. To say someone else deserves credit for it is bullshit.

The Hater-aid being consumed on this forum is reeking through my screen. As a 36 yr old that came of age during the ascendancy of porn, I can assure you that while porn would certainly exist without Jenna Jameson, its impact on society and acceptance would be far less. In an industry where almost all of the performers leave the business with little or nothing, she left it a millionaire. In an industry where a succesful title sells 5000 copies she routinesly sold over 100k. The fame registry list Tera patrick as the most famous active porn star of 2008. Jenna Jamesons number of myspace friends is 6 times those of Patrick. Her Google searches are twice those of Patrick. You people have got to be kidding me. Jenna Jameson is to porn what babe Ruth is to baseball, whether you like it or not.
The point is, Jenna Jameson didn't make her "millions" doing porn. She made them through successfully marketing herself as the face and name of porn. No one questions the woman's business acumen. But as to the question of what she's done for the industry, I'd say very little. Most of the major changes that happened during the Jenna years were the result of the explosion of the internet. The internet is what brought porn into every American household. Jenna just rode the wave... and in the process, made herself the de facto spokesperson for the industry. Jenna was the pornstar even your grandma had heard of. But porn never had the problem of gaining "acceptance". Americans always accepted porn... and usually sought it out. The problem has been getting Americans to acknowledge porn. It has, and continues to be, our dirty little secret. An industry that makes billions, but that very few people openly admit to supporting. Just look at the recent conviction of Rob Black. Black never forced anyone to buy his movies, and if no one ever had, he wouldn't have had a problem. But he was prosecuted for giving people exactly what they wanted, and he's going to jail for it without a word of support from the millions of Americans who bought his movies. Pure hypocritical bullshit. People accept porn alright... but they'll let the industry twist in the wind before they'll admit it. Edited by - william hyde on 3/14/2009 9:05:54 PM
I agree with you and what you said here ties in with what I said earlier about girls coming in and trying to find porn success trying to follow the Jenna Jameson blueprint. It's a business model that really isn't going to work for most girls because it's so limiting. As big as Jenna was her career and fanbase would've probably been even bigger if she a performer who chose or took the type of career path of someone like Sasha Grey or even Bree Olsen. Jenna had huge success but it was success catering to a fairly small particular fanbase. If you weren't a fan of features and the the type of sex scenes done in them chances are you probably weren't a big fan of Jenna's. I think I've only watched a Jenna scene 2 or 3 times and didn't think that much of any of them. Not to say they were bad per se but nothing special in my opinion. To see Jenna you have to be a Jenna fan and seek her out plus you have to be a fan of the type of performances she does otherwise Jenna will be off your radar. With a pornstar like Sasha Grey or Bree Olsen, they are true "stars" because they do great scenes that appeal to a much broader and diverse fanbase. Sasha and Bree will do the high end porn and the lower end stuff. They can do features and the hardcore gonzo stuff equally well. They have fans who like anal, IR, bubble butts, younger girls, softer stuff, rougher stuff, and the more extreme stuff. They do all those genres extremely well and do just enough of all of them to leave fans wanting more. Jenna was great at making money for Jenna and VIVID. Sasha and Bree appear on the covers of many different companies and boost sales for lots of companies in porn. And they do it on a much more regular basis. A Jenna release was an "event" that only happened a few times a year. Sasha is a dependable star putting out new product much more regularly in different genres. The list of companies who have been able to profit from Sasha is much much longer than the ones able to benefit from Jenna. When Sasha or Bree win an award you tend to believe they deserved it because they did some outstanding work. With Jenna you usually wonder if it's because she's so popular.

I just did some research on some popular public figures and found some amazing results. Looking just the number of times a figures name is entered into google as a keyword you Jenna Haters that think the the industry would just fine had she not come along, should know that among other things ; her name is used as a keyword more than that of Kobe Bryant, Derek Jeter, Tera Patrick and Howard Stern combines. Whe it comes to google searches, porn stars do very well, but Jenna is another universe. Her name is used as a keyword 5 timers a much as any other porn star, or for that matter, someone like our current Secretary of State and presidential runner-up, and first lady, arguably the second most famous woman in the word, Hillary Clinton. I think its safe to say that when it comes to porn there is the porn industry which is only so big, and then theres Jenna Jameson, who seems to be introducing new people to the industry every day, even now, years after her last film. You people need to treat her like the Godfather. Kiss her ring, and hope she doesnt have you wacked.
simmond, you are right, the haters on this thread are unbelievable. their dislike of Jenna Jameson is obviously clouding up their perception of her overrated? not much of a performer? okay i agree! but to say she is not famous or she has not been successful... that is totally ridiculous when has any porn star ever been in Forbes magazine? When has a porn star's pregnancy ever made national media? yeah Fox News is fucking trash, but there is no denying it has a huge market all those tabloids, US weekly and so on, they treat Jenna Jameson like a celebrity william Shatner just interviewed her for the Biography channel for no reason other than she's Jenna Jameson you say Jenna Jameson is just about marketing and self-promotion. you are RIGHT. that is why she is the most successful porn star in history. you don't think she gives "star" performances, all right. that is your artistic critique that doesn't have anything to do with stardom. stardom is money and fame. she has both. face reality and right now, some 18-year-old promiscuous chick is seeing Jenna on TV or in a magazine or whatever and she thinks "fuck, i could do that"
Bump OK - I was going to say "not very important", but upon further review, that's really not being fair. You would really have to say that Jenna did move adult entertainment somewhat closer to the mainstream. Although, in truth, its not that close - nor may it ever be. Jenna has had about as much "crossover" as anyone ever has in porn, but for a very select few (please dont throw Ron Jeremy in my face). I think the question is (regarding the above statement) how significant is that? - not much, me thinks. As far as her contribution to porn itself (ignoring the mainstream factor). She is, no doubt, a hall-of-famer with significant name recognition. I would say it ends there. Her presence, from what I can see, has not seemed to have significantly changed porn. I would say this: noting that the beginning of her career coincided with the advent of "gonzo porn"; her Up and Cummers scene with Randy West is one of the best in that genre. You could sight that as one of her most significant moments and contributions. Edited by - KinkWilliams on 10/18/2014 10:42:55 AM
I was just looking at my last post in this thread and some of what I said then I don't feel that way now. But yeah...Jenna was very important to porn overall. She was the gateway porn for lots of people because of her mainstream visablity and she was the person who gave porn a face back then and allowed people to not look at porn as some lowbrow disgusting thing. And she absolutely paved the way for many others that followed her and got mainstream recognition. A trailblazer for sure when it comes to her impact on/in porn as far as selling product, making porn more acceptable to the masses, inspiring girls to enter the business, and helping the porn biz become more profitable overall. But some people try to judge her impact based on her performance skills and the type of porn she made. If you judge that way she falls way short. But her role in porn and what she did was far more important than whether she was "hardcore" enough.
I think she was important to porn in that she is a household name (sort of) and achieved that before being a reality show "celebrity." That being said, I don't think I have ever watched one of her scenes 'cause that blonde bimbo with implants look is a huge turn off for me.
I guess so. Although she has long since been usurped by others. At this point in time, I think you would have to say that Bree Olsen has become the #1 recognizable porn star among the non-porn viewing public. Even more so than Ginger Lynn. Jenna has pretty much faded. I cant say that Bree has helped porn in any way other than just being an amazing porn star.
Absolutely this. I was a horny teenager when I first saw Jenna on The Howard Stern Show on E! Network. For a young guy just coming into the world of fapping she was a godsend. My family got internet shortly thereafter and I started looking for her stuff. From there I got into the Vivid Girls of the late 90s/early 2000s. And from there, many years later, I got into gonzo. I can't say with certainty that I would have never gotten into porn without Jenna Jameson, but I can say that she was instrumental in my own personal development.

Jenna Jameson was to porn in the 90's what Hulk Hogan was to wrestling in the 80's. Both were marketable faces that opened up their respective industries to broader audiences. In that regard both were very important. Was Hogan a good in the ring? Hell no. Was Jenna good on film? Meh, not really. But their technical abilities aren't what made them. Their personas were.
The only difference between Jenna and Kim Kardassian is that Jenna's porn vids were "official". Kim IS the most successful porn star of all time. Kim's fortune was created by hype generated in part by her sex tape. Jenna has spent more time on her knee's in front of a camera and has nothing compared to show for it. Kim didn't "offically" crossover to "the darkside" of porn but she sure as hell has benefited from it. I've never watched porn made by either of them because I'm a real porn fan and not a groupie. Most guys who purchased Jenna's products were guys who hadn't figured out what they actually liked yet or were too embarrassed to ask for what they really wanted and just bought/rented what was popular at the moment. I worked at an Adult shop for 3 years. I saw it happen.
That's debatable...I'd say Sasha Grey has/had more of a mainstream presense than Bree. Bree's main exposure came from the whole Charlie Sheen thing. Bree's fame from that didn't even last that long. Sasha's mainstream exposure wasn't as big but it lasted much longer and still goes o today. Even in porn I'd say Sasha's fame was bigger than Bree's. Oh...and I still think Jenna's the most recognizable pornstar. She hasn't been in the public that much lately but people still remember her...it hasn't been that long.

It depends on the audience. I've never liked the style of porn that made Jenna famous, but there's little question that many people who did like that style of porn genuinely enjoyed Jenna's work.
Seeing Jenna on Howard Stern when I was a teenager around the time Blue Movie came out was a big part of what lead to me becoming a huge porn fan. But after a couple of years, I drifted away from her and started enjoying less "tame" porn stars, such as Alicia Klass and Gauge. And for whatever reason, 90's porn with their "MTV-style" editing and cheesy production values has aged worse than any other decade. Seriously, I can watch and enjoy many "classics" from the 70's and 80's, but much of what I enjoyed in the 90's is practically unwatchable.
