Don't get me wrong, I think AVN's principles are noble and I commend it for taking such a bold stance but I doubt the industry will change.

Some studios run on business models that rely on playing to racial stereotypes to market and sell their content. That said, it would be interesting to see a marketing whizz change the spin on studios portraying sex between people of a different race as incidental.

You've also got those who effectively categorize their performers and models albeit not to the point of segregating them. If the "ebony" genre is abolished by a studio for example, will black women have the same opportunities?

I guess a good starting point would be lesbian porn where race is far less of a taboo. Hell, thinking of it more Mike Adriano would be a good example as he has rarely placed emphasis on the women's race in the majority of his movies.

I don't see a change coming about any time soon but I would welcome being proved wrong.

There are studios out there being progressive, companies that don't have categories such as interracial or asian.

I'm certainly not expecting Dogfart to turn on a dime tomorrow and never fetichize black people. But AVN's decision it's a step in the right direction. And if those companies get increasingly isolated and more performers refuse to work with them that'll make a difference.

If the adult industry reaches a state of equality I don't think it will harm black performers' opportunities. Quite the opposite. They won't be limited to interracial scenes, they won't be told by companies "you can't be in this movie because it's not an interracial movie" or "you can't be in this gangbang because this performer doesn't do IR scenes"

If IR doesn't exist and performers aren't paid different rates for performing with black performers they'll just doing a scene with another performer regardless of that performer's skincolor.

I applaud this move. Will it fix everything, no. However, it is a giant step in the right direction. If the giants of the industry remove the term, and associated awards, that will lower the impact of the term. Hopefully, the other award shows will follow suit.

My concern when I see something like this is that rather than shooting scenes with black and white performers and simply not labeling it as ""IR", the studios will instead just stop shooting scenes with black and white performers.

I hope this doesn't happen, but 40+ years of being black in North America has shown me that if there's a way we can get screwed, white people will find it.

Sadly, this is so very true.

^^ I feel embarrassed not having thought of that but it's hard to disagree, especially if you find a boycott for "mislabelling", which I wouldn't put past people.

Meh, a nice gesture, but I don't see porn sites/studios following suit.

Yeah, I agree with this. And the removal of the ethnic categories of awards is probably just gonna mean that movies and scenes with minority performers are just gonna get less awards, because it's not like AVN has a great history of awarding minority performers and scenes featuring them.

^^Thanks for linking that. I never heard of Porn News Today before. It's an interesting site and she's not afraid to call out some prominent figures in the porn industry for racism and abuse.

Yeah, when it comes to the AVN Awards, it might mean even less minority recognition. But in regards to the fear expressed by killbillvol69 in his post, I don't see how studios would decide to just stop shooting "black man fucking white woman" scenes. Those scenes are just too popular - and lucrative - for studios to not do them, regardless of what labels/tags they're forced to use instead of "interracial/IR".

I always found it ridiculous to turn the IR category into black man-white woman scenes only when there's all kinds of interracial scenes with different ethnicities, which many people including me happen to like.

Well, yeah, that's the way it's always been...porn's definition of interracial is different from the "real world" meaning. Same goes for the "MILF" label, where there's a difference between porn and the real world over what constitutes a "Mom I'd Like to Fuck".

Term as used in porn was always dumb, because it ever only described black men fucking white women mostly. Not black women fucking white men, or asians etc.

Porn didn't invent the specificity of the interracial taboo. Society did. Porn capitalizes on it.

So black men/white women dominated a general term which discredited everybody else on the scene. That's the only 'racist' thing I see in all of this.

This is meaningless jump on the bandwagon fluff that does nothing but shorten a bloated awards program by 10-15 minutes.
