South was in hospice care and his health had been reported in decline, after a recent fall. Veteran Golden Age performer Christy Canyon posted on Twitter shortly before 4:00 p.m. that "with a heavy heart I just heard my beautiful Jim South of World Modeling has passed today. He was the man who changed my life for the better in 1984 when I was 18. He was a straight shooter who refused to even kiss me as he said it wasn't professional. A kind, gentle soul I South is widely considered by industry figures and historians the person who invented and defined the job of adult talent agent during the Golden Age of porn that peaked in the 1980s. He established the World Modeling Agency in 1976, specializing in "figure modeling, photography and film."
"After working as an insurance salesman in Dallas, Texas in the 1950s and '60s, South moved to the Los Angeles area in 1968 and reportedly first opened a mainstream modeling agency, then switched over to representing adult performers in 1976, when he opened World Modeling Talent Agency on Van Nuys Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. For many years, South and Reb Sawitz's Pretty Girl International were the only two adult modeling agencies, and between them, they supplied adult producers with nearly every actor and actress who worked in adult film on the West Coast. South is credited with discovering some of the greatest classical adult actresses in the business, including Christy Canyon, Ginger Lynn, Francesca Le, Savannah, Tera Patrick and many others." more at the links above
