If we put ourselves in the girl's shoes they are doing shows, interviews pretending to be a person they are not. When you think about it, it is kinda like a black mirror episode. Why are the people working in the industry so marginalised? Hide, fear, control. This certainly has echoes of the past. I don't believe most girls want to be in shadows. Once they pick a name it's like they are locked in an ecosystem living an alternate reality. I suspect some girls who left the industry prematurely despite great success and abandoned their accounts subconsciously despised this 'you are a different person now' thing.

Picking a name that sticks with you forever..think about it. You did porn for a few years and now have millions of followers on instagram. You retired but the name stays with you. You get rid of the name and people wonder who you are. Most brands do not want to associate with a virtual name so even though you have a large following you can not monetize it that well.

This does not have to that much of a decision. How about a new girl just dropping by a studio because she like glamour and wants to try something for a change. New girls don't get to do that, they have to sit with agents and choose a new name and then sometimes they change it many times so that it becomes difficult to track their work.

Anonymity is wonderful thing. Petter Hegre shoots some models who are allowed to not show their face. However, many are not a big fan of this thing and understandably so. It may give a stigmatic character to human body and remind us of middle ages. When I see girls working with, Maitland Ward for example, the girls have more of second class aura. It's understandable how Maitland is in a privileged position but I definitely hope new girls can get atleast some of that in the future. One identity definitely makes living seamless and way easier.
