Although the style itself has been around since the late 70s or early 80s it was made popular by John Stagliano who brought it to the forefront with his feature/gonzo release The Adventures of Buttman. I suppose there is an intermediate type of video called "vignette," as well, though maybe vignettes can also be gonzo? In its original form, gonzo is what I think of when I want to describe the early Buttman videos. Seymore picked up a camera after renting out his gym to Stagliano for one of the first Buttman flicks. Then Seymore's girlfriend Shane started Shane's World after they broke up. Of those three, Shane's World is probably the only one that continues to fully embrace the larger idea of gonzo, which was a documentary-like spontaneity and a sense (an appearance, if not the actual fact) that some of the sex is not planned or scripted, but just sort of happens (w/SW's recent lines, the porn stars actually have unprotected sex with college kids who have signed model releases and gotten HIV clearance ahead of time). Other than those mentioned (and I don't think Seymore's stuff has the same vibe at all anymore) I still think, actually, that Rocco's movies, especially the crazier ones, embrace the "spirit of gonzo" more completely than anyone else. And Joey Silvera. But you can't really go back to what it was like to watch those videos back in '91 or '92. I didn't know much about the insider world of porn at all then, so I honestly thought that some of those classic Buttman set-ups were for real -- not entirely hired performers! Same for Seymore's flicks. David Aaron Clark still works in a more pure gonzo style, where anything can happen and it probably will. Midnight Prowl is pretty gonzo, too ... though strangely predictable. (If there is a Mexican laborer, a porn girl, an X-rated book store and a video camera, you can bet there will be cocksucking ...) Buttman's Ass Adoro is the first new Buttman title in a long time, and is definitely a back to the roots event. It's a single scene running about 2 hours. Just great. And some of Brandon Iron's scenes for his "intensities" sex and travel series, have that loose, anything-goes vibe. It's all out there ... some gonzo is more gonzo than others. As Skronker noted, it's an umbrella term these days to differentiate from feature sex. DAC, Seymore Butts and Joey Silvera are the only directors that I can think of currently that are actively doing it even part of the time. I think in a true gonzo scene you get the feeling that almost anything can happen and the scene will turn at anyone's whim. Shooters like Jules Jordan are more stylized, they're product more rigidly constructed and acts mapped out. Good vignettes are like mini features, and IMO far superior because they're not weighed down by continued plot development. Much of what we term gonzo should more accurately be called sportfucking. Sex just for the sake of physical enjoyment. [Link]

Although the movies of his that I have seen contain scripted vignettes, they often meet Tricia's requirements of having the cameraman interact and perform with the women in the scenes. They often have a more personal feel than all-sex movies or other vignette style movies, despite being scripted. Do others consider Rodney Moore to be a gonzo director / performer? [Link]

Joey(and also John Leslie, & even Randy West) are great legends from the ranks of performers going back to the 1970s. I'd include the great Paul Thomas & Candida Royale too but they never followed their fellow performers into gonzo and ended up directing scripted porn, their strong points which they obviously love. I could imagine Joey directing a young woman like Naomi whose young enough to be his daughter. A strange dichotomy as he was fucking somebody the likes of Joanna Storm on the day Naomi was born. With Joey or John it's a father / daughter thing with these young actresses as they don't fuck anymore and try to helm an up&coming star. Seymore on the other hand out of necessity started out gonzo. Seymour came along at the right moment at the right time. One can learn a lot about Seymore by listening to him on that Family Business cable show. He came along in the mid 90s when porn was at a low & amateur truly sucked, think of Randy Detroit. Only in the early 70's did we get the "feature". Surely no one believes the stag films of the 20's had a screenplay with music. Gonzo is minimal story the pizza has arrived} or no story. I lived thru the so called hayday of features in the 80's and went thru several vcr's by wearing out the fast forward. I don't want story and music with my porno. If I want story I will rent a David Mamet film and if I want music I will listen to the radio.
