are all gay films filmed with condoms now or is it up to individual studios/directors/performers?

Because of HIV/AIDS, the gay porn industry switched to safe sex practices back in the mid-to-late 80's. There are a very, very few studios and performers who are once again doing bareback videos and there are some consumers in the gay world who are encouraging them; however, most consider it irresponsible.

While it is true that there are tests for the AIDS virus, AIDS is still very hard to detect in its earliest stages. Essentially, in order to be completely safe, all parties involved must be tested three times at approximately three-month intervals without having had unprotected sex at all during that period. This is not practical in the gay porn industry, thus the use of condoms.

The straight porn industry has taken a different approach, one of continual testing. Essentially, they trust performers to be smart enough to have protected sex only, or to have sex with safe partners only, when off the set and they require current HIV/AIDS testing for all performers before each shoot begins. This approach is good but not one hundred percent effective. Every now and then, you will hear rumors of a pocket of infection and a few more stars will quietly disappear from the porn sky.

Unfortunately, HIV/AIDS exists. When people in the gay world realized what it was and how it was spread, we responded with safe sex practices which have saved hundreds of thousands, if not millions of lives.

The safe sex message and its results worked so well that some people have begun to believe that the problem has gone away. This is especially true of young men who are just coming to terms with their homosexuality. Most are at an age where they consider themselves to be invincible in the first place: they take the attitude that HIV/AIDS can't happen to them.

The results are devastating: HIV/AIDS is on the rise among young men in their teens and early twenties. And, with all the very, very expensive drug cocktails available, HIV/AIDS is still lethal and there is still no cure.

This is why most people in the gay world consider the new interest in and production of bareback videos to be a very negative and irresponsible development.

i do understand the reason for the use of condoms in gay porn as the issue is to big a thing to bring it down to mere asthetics. but i have to say as a bi-guy in my 20's i do prefere gay porn without condoms and do look for titles that don't feature them. its a tragic irony that the use of condoms in porn actually introduces the fact that porn can be a dangerous and therefore unapealing thing to watch/do. its as if when you see a condom you think, ooh, i wonder if one of them is infected or are they just being responsible? the fact that its there reminds you of the problem its trying to solve/avoid.

i'm actually a fan of the old gay porn classics such as "these bases are loaded" and "class of 84" mainly cos they don't use condoms but also the guys seem more natural, so i can just collect them for now, without creating new demand for newer titles(which would probably be crap any way). anyway thanks for the informative and non-judgmental reply, GaySatyr :)

Well, if you are just looking for newer bareback flicks, you can try Treasure Island Media or Hot Desert Knights. Both put out all bareback DVDs and VHS. I've only seen a couple of HDK ones, and quite frankly, the men weren't very attractive.

At least with bareback porn, you don't have to wonder about anyone's status. It's pretty much a given that all the guys in these movies are HIV+. Whether or not that makes it easier to watch is up to you.
