I notice that a lot of buzz always accompanies the signing of a new contract girl, but I can never figure out why. What exactly is a contract girl from a marketing point of view? What justifies paying a contract girl more than another girl? Are there people out there who actually sit around and wait for a movie by a contract girl to come out?

I have always assumed the adult movie studios were trying to create a "star system" like the one from the old Hollywood days (or even today!). Ie, you choose a girl whom people seem to like, then you create a lot of hype around her. Then you sell movies based on the hype. Is this correct? Does it work?

I think it deffinatly workes in some cases. For example I have always been a big fan of Monica Roccaforte, a contract girl under Mario Salieri`s label. To be honest I would buy any production of her to come out, even after she seem to be stopped.
Salieri had more girls under a contract like Julia Taylor, Bambola, fact is that his video`s with any of the contract girls on the covers, sell better then others. There are also other nice girls on those movies, but not nice enough to buy every movie of. So it makes sense to me why he picked certain girls to be contract girls and others not.
Remember that there are also loads of girls on pornmovies who look horrible, 90% of the movies I buy have 1 or 2 good actrices in it, the rest is like filling time for me, basicly the best girl is on the cover (and that are often the contract girls).

I don't care about contract girls because it's (almost) always the companies I don't like that sign contract girls.

I also hate it when a couples-only companies sign a contract girl who I like because it means I can never see her again in action. This was the case in Sunrise Adams and Brianna Banks for example.

Totally agree with this - to me, it seems that only the industry insiders care about contract girls. For us fans, it provides no benefits at all and, as Ramsey points out, in some cases it means you get less variety.

Biggest example for me was Michelle Wild being contract with Kovi - look at how similar all her Private movies were until she went freelance (and thank God she did!).

Press releases announcing contract signings must be aimed at other industry people, because I doubt fans care.

I don`t think it is totaly the issue like you say, in our eyes it would look like that sometimes yes, but I think about the girl`s point of view.

For example:

There are also contract girls who never would have been famous if they weren`t contracted, I believe there are girls on the buiz that only continued to make porn becausse they had been contracted, as that if they weren`t, they probably would have left the business becausse of the (too) low payments.

I know Monica Roccaforte`s storie as example, who wanted to quit porn to finish her study but continued to work for Mario Salieri after he made her a "offer she couldn`t refuse".

What I try to say is that I think some girls just are tired of making porn for a few $, and wen they sign a contract, they want things more easy for theirselves, in my eyes this is still better then as they quit and never see them anymore at all.

Just my "holland" opinion

You say it yourself, you are right about the movies looking simulair, but what if she wouldn`t have been contracted by Kovi, also becausse of her many appaerances with Kovi she became famous as she is now, so her "market point" has become so good many companie`s want her now, and deffinatly pay her a different fee then they did in the beginning of her career!!

You can ask yourself also that if she had never sign that contract and stayed freelance, she might have made movies for lower $, got tired of it and quited allready.

I totaly agree on the variety issue of content, but don`t forget these girls also do porn very much for the $$$, I think that if companies payed always great prices for those kind of girls even from the beginning, they wouldn`t sign a contract at all.

You sell a lot of movies based on the fact that you've got the girl everybody would like to see.

edited for typos...a never ending process.

I'm not sure that being a contract girl actually guarantees more money than independent performers. What it does do is guarantee a certain amount of work. They don't need to hustle for bookings. Also, it might mean receiving corporate benefits such as health insurance that the other girls have to take care of on their own. From the company's point of view it means locking up a performer that they feel will sell more product.
