I have a bunch of WMV video files, and I need to convert them to other formats (e.g. AVI, MOV, etc). Does anyone have a suggestion of a good utility (preferably free) that'll handle it?

Today I have been playing around with Media Coder and managed to convert wmv to mpg (my favourite). It is a relatively simple task. Just make sure you use the xvid codec within an mpeg container, and set the bitrate to the highest possible level. I use an older version of Media Coder, as the newer versions suck ass.
In your case, jayo, just use the xvid codec within an avi container.
tmpgenc Makes VCD And SVCD Quality MPEG's to be burned to disk and played on your dvd player :)

Thanks for that link. That is exactly the type of program I am looking for, if it does what it claims to do. Unfortunately, it aint freeware, so I won't be downloading it.
I have been using 4 different versions of Nero 6 to create SVCDs from wmv files for a few years now. It works perfectly. Problem is, it is only compatible with CD, not DVD.

I installed two versions of Nero 7, including version 7.5, which I believe is their latest one. Both versions failed to let me burn a SVCD. In my opinion Nero 7 is crap. That's why I use Nero 6.
P.S. Don't even think of installing the free extra content and templates package for NeroVision (one of the applications you get with Nero... the one where you create your own movies). It has screwed-up every single version of NeroVision I have ever attempted to use it with, on every computer, every time. You have been warned :)
