Are most adult dvd's copy protected, or just certain companies? What about making backup copies for personal use only?
Thanks

What about making backup copies for personal use only?

It's terms like that that copy protection is on DVDs. Who seriously makes copies just to have, it's not like DVDs are overly expensive.

If this post comes across as rude, I apologize, I am just really grumpy lately.

If I make a million dollars a year then mercedes
are not expensive and I can buy a new one every
year. It is all a matter of perspective. The Supreme
Court has rulled that citizens can make copies for their
personal use. DVD recorders are coming soon to your neigh
borhood Wal-Mart and at a reasonable price. Either
embrass it or get buried by it. Did the VCR create the adult
industry or destroy it. Just not that many people are
interested in a DVD collection.

Ahh you're advocating the piracy of DVDs then. Having the Backup to something you no longer have the original of. For shame on you junglew.

Are there legitmate reasons for making backups? Yes, of course.
If you use something over and over you don't want it to wear out.
Same thing with CDs and Computer Software. Especially computer games. My original starcraft CD finally bit the dust, glad I made a copy of it so I can still play my favorite game.
And if you go on business trips take copies of your software so in case anyone steals your stuff or your shit is lost you still have the orignals at home.

It's called Macrovision and it can be hacked.
Quite easily in fact.
It's just a case of accessing the secret menu on your dvd player.
There are web sites which deal in macro hacks, but it's not right.
The macro is put there for a reason.
Copywrited material.

seems to me people go through an awful lot of work in order to just not purchase the dvd...i certainly don't have time for all that (and gay DVDs cost like $50 a pop)

The macro is put there presumably to underline the copyright issue.
It most certainly would not be able to deter anyone who is determined to disable it.
That said, it would be a criminal action.
@Folk....$50 EACH??
WOW.
That's steep!
How do they justify that? Are the gay actors on million-dollar contracts or something!?

Makes me think.

Macrovision is the ONLY kind of copy protection available?

Cuz, if the major porn studios really wanted, they could hire some whiz kids to develop other, alternative scrambling codes to protect DVDs from unwanted copies or rippings.

It would be less expensive than paying for the Macrovision rights, and a pain in the ass to the pirates.

Of course, eventually somebody will come up with a crack, but that´s the 21th Century, so it´s better get used to it.

@Planet...
It's the same with hard-core porno channels.
During the mid 1990s, there was a sex channel called Eurotica. The card pirates hacked it in days.
Instead of changing the codes, the bosses behind Eurotica used the same card codes for two years running, making it the most watched, highly pirated channel in Europe.
You could say this was to the channel's advantage. The piracy kept the channel in the news and public eye.
Far from finishing Eurotica off, it managed to stay afloat and get new, official subscribers every year.
Why, because "honest" people wanting the channel would never buy a pirate card.
Likewise, the pirates would never buy an official card.
The situation wasn't enough to sink the ship - least for four years.

well gay porn sells less... and the whole cinematography/lay out is a lot nicer (in my opinion). but in other words, they're ripping us off!

@Folk...you bet they're ripping you off.
Isn't there a gay channel you could subscribe to?
In Europe, there are several channels broadcasting gay movies. Most of them are American movies, some Italian, Spanish, etc.
In the last week, I have counted at least 8 gay films.
If you were to buy them, you're talking about $400!
Surely a channel subscription would be the cheaper option...

But that´s Europe, a completely different market than the American one - that, in turn, is completely different from the brazilian one, that´s completely different from the japanese one, and so on. But that´s irrelevant.

Problem is, piracy IS harmful. As you said, Eurotica DID sank. And it took only four years.

Eurotica was bought by a cigar-puffing con-man.
He saw the potential and took the money and ran.
Result: screens went blank.
*But your points are noted and agreed.

Firstly there are very many legitimate reasons to make backup copies of films you own. It is also a right of yours to do so in most countries. Including the us. However theres a current catch 22 in the in terms of making a backup in the US as you have to bypass the very poor encyption algorthm IF you are transfering a dvd to another digital medium ie SVCD/VCD. However technically if you did a BIT to BIT copy it wouldnt be a violation. Its a bit messy you see However this is US law, and considering current US law its part of a whacky whole.

As for the whole Macrovision idea, etc and various encryption ideas, they are all flawed. You see its fine if you want to ENCRYPT something but you actually need to play it back so hardware/software will always need to contain the decryption information , so it can always be reversed engenired.

Also the piracy phrase again , not piracy has nothing to do with looting ships and killing people , its a term of propoganda used to prevent discussion or create a pre judgement. Not stealing either , if i steal something from you , you know longer have it, its a term of propoganda as well in order to attach a moral feeling to copyright infringement.
Finally The meca of DVD back up info is www.vcdhelp.com

Ah. THAT part of the story I didn´t knew.
That´s the OTHER good way to sink a ship.
I´ve seen it happen before, and I´m sure I´ll see it happen again and again.

No matter what you´re calling, I´ll give you an example of how, let´s call it "piracy" for now, can be harmful.

THE FASHIONISTAS, for example, is being sold at $50 bucks in U.S. stores. It´s a costly set for serious collectors, who surely will want the original box.

BUT...

Joe Public, the guy who doesn´t care for fancyful packages and only want to jack off to Belladonna´s butt, can already d/l copies of THE FASHONISTAS for free on p2p servers, or buy a double DVD-R set (with just the film), and another double DVD-R disc called THE FASHIONISTAS PART 2 (the extras disc spread on two single-layered DVD-R) at 30 brazilian Reais each (about $ 8,50 american).

So, piracy IS harmful.

BTW, yesterday I just saw the first batch of Extreme and RLD DVDs pirated in Brazilian soil. I already gave the news to the brazilian RLD distributors, and they´re after those guy´s asses.

Moderator: Please do not discuss techniques or provide links to sites that offer advice on copying DVDs. Adult DVD Talk supports intellectual property rights and the laws, and if you think about it, there's no way there would be the level of participation from studios, stars, and stores on these forums if consumers were discussing techniques that most people would use to steal their works.

There's plenty of information and places to discuss the legality and techniques of copying DVDs on the Internet. For that matter, with P2P file sharing, there's a hell of a lot of information and debate on the issue of copyrights and copy protection. I don't see that there's anything new that could possibly be discussed that hasn't been discussed elsewhere ad nauseum.
